Surprised i see no thread on the Imp.

Just did a search and i am surprised i didn't find any threads dealing with the Imp, one of the core 100 tonners right alongside the Atlas...

The 3025 Imp is the best assault in the game.

I had one painted up to look like R2D2.

Tight between the Imp and the Marauder II.

Imp has firepower. MAD II has armor and no ammo at all. Damage profile is very similar. Imp slightly better range bracket. MAD II has better focused damage, which might prove decisive vs the somewhat lighter armor of the Imp. JJ on the MAD give it an advantage.

As a pure fighter, Imp IS probably better.  I'm not sure the MAD II doesn't have enough other advantages to win, fairly often. Both are real beasts.

Only Wolf's Dragoons had them for a long time. So that may explain it. They also look silly, if loveable giant, destructive R2 units.

was the Imp designed in the IS prior to the Exodus, like the Annihilator?  Or is it a fully Clan-conceived design?

cheers,

Gabe
So, now I'm imagining people boxing up Overlords for loading as cargo.  "Nope, totally not a DropShip.  Everyone knows you can't fit a DropShip in a WarShip!  It's...a ten thousand ton box of marshmallows!  Yeah.  For the Heavy Guards big annual smores party."

Per Operation Klondike, Nick Kerensky ordered it designed as sort of a totem for the new Clans he just formed.  The original ones I think were basically handcrafted machines.

The Imp's firepower is superb.  But dear GOD it looks absolutely terrible.  Yeah its quirky, yeah its 'classic' and pretty much sacrosanct, but it still look like it was designed by a 6 - 8 year old when they were asked to draw a robot.

I'm not sure who approved the CCG art, but it really ruins the image of a number of mechs.  I'm not a fan of sloppy fantasy art (imo) as it is.

The Imp mini is a decent static pose to me, while OP Klondike made a number of units so much better looking than the initial appearances.

I guess that depends how you define "core". An Inner Sphere tech 'Mech designed in the Clan Homeworlds that was really only ever used by the Wolf Dragoons in the Inner Sphere isn't exactly what I'd call "core". It's a great machine, but anyone who bases most of their scenarios around the established setting & availability is going to find circumstances to use it rather rare....

Aside from the Annihilator, I frequently forget that the Wolf's Dragoons mechs exist.

Yes, even the Marauder II.

I ran an Imp 1B (we were using custom machines, I just did mine as a 2E that had been coincidentally customized to match the 1B) in a mercenary campaign earlier this year.  It was great: I'd march it out onto the field, choose a spot I liked, then sit there and deliver LRM and PPC fire to everything in sight.  If they got close, the medium laser array and ECM kept them honest.

And, of course, shouting "Oh yeah!" whenever I forced my way through a building in a city fight was fun, too.

I like the Imp. I like the mini, I like the way it plays, but I find that it's limited distribution (I don't often play dragoons, and I prefer fluff-compatible forces) makes it hard for me to table. I have the same problem with the MAD II, Flea, Annihilator and Shogun. They all sit in my case, because they're most at home in a force I don't play :(

I am often amused by people that put limitations on themselves just because they go with fluff or by whats supposed to be historical canon.

If I have a game and I want to use a specific mini and mech I just use it. Not all games have to adhere to fiction. Its supposed to be fun at the end of the day.

Your definition of fun isn't necessarily the same as another person's.

The original art in Wolf's Dragoons wasn't that bad:

It was the TRO 3050 art (that most subsequent art was based on) where it got real ugly:

True dat.  Some people find it fun, trying to field a group of mechs, made by a specific house..  Some just don't care about what houses the mechs came from, they wanna field what they wanna field..

For a lot of us, the fun is in the limitations. Everybody blasting each other with over-optimized custom Gausszillas can get old really quickly. Figuring out how to use a faction's established equipment despite its limitations is something I find much more rewarding. It also provides a narrative aspect to game play that I find essential to truly investing in the hobby. "Eight 'Mechs show up & they fight" is something I quickly lose interest in.

The original is my preferred. If it was up to me, a resculpt would match those proportions more closely. Essentially, that would mean either larger legs and hips or a smaller torso/head or both compared to the current miniature.

I love the Imp.  It's my go-to choice when I get to the assault era in Solaris Melee Challenge.  It's cheap, it's solid, the heat curve is easy to manage, and it can cause a PSR at long range and light up your face with laser spam when you get close.  What's not to like?

Sad thing about the Imp is the miniature. The mini from the early 90s still is in production but trippled the price since then. To offer such uglies in 2018 is close to am insult. ;)

Already in 1994 with 14 years of age and a very limited support in available blisters it never occured to me to buy such ugly mini. Now i own 3... but bahhh.

I would love to see a resculpt of it. Prefered artwork would be of Op Klondike. I love to play the clan version in some second line units. Of all the WD mechs i think the Imp is the worst message you can get, if you have to fight them.
