A New Mouse needed
« on: 17 April 2015, 10:15:04 »
My Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical died a month ago. My original thought was to buy another one, but it seems that Microsoft no longer manufactures this mouse.

I used a stored Connect Biohazard mouse that was packed with a new graphics card. However, this mouse didn't suit my needs because of its shape and those disco lights.

I bought a cheap Chinese mouse that lasted two weeks (it failed yesterday).

You know, I would prefer a simple and reliable mouse (but suitable for MWO) of a "standard" shape, but it seems that such mouses (or mice?) are hard to find. And not wireless. No background LEDs.

One mouse that catched my eye is Logitech G100s Optical Gaming Mouse

However, no shop here has it, so I would have to order it.

So my questions are:
  • Has any of you experience with this mouse? Reliability, shape, surface?
  • Do you know about some similar mouse that you would recommend?

The horror of getting a new mouse. I feel your pain on this one. If you can find one the Logitech MX400 Performance Laser Mouse is a good one. Good shape, and has extra buttons on the thumb side that I find useful for MWO. There are some pics on the logitech support page. Can't find em new, but they can still be found online. I have had mine for years. I dread the day I will have to replace it...

Good luck!

I bought one of these a couple years ago.  It was a great fit for my big hands and the programmable buttons worked very well for me--there weren't too many of them that I had to worry about mashing multiple at once.  I paid $40 for it because they were dumping their MW3 stock.  Looks like you can still find them on ebay for about the same.

Thanks for your advices.

So my new mouse is Zalman ZM-M250G.

It withstood the challenge of the battle of Tukayyid  ;)  Without it, the Clans would have been defeated.

It sports a better sensor than my old Microsoft mouse (selectable 1600/1200/800 DPI), while retaining that preferred "humped" shape. It has "softer" and quiter buttons too. I know that Zalman produces quiet cooling fans, but that even their mice are quiet, that's surprise  :)

Plus, I must admit I liked that texture of printed circuit board.

Won't a mouse with more buttons, for higher weapon groups, be better for MWO?

Not always. Mine has 4 buttons and if I use the wrong button I sometimes shoot my teammates in the back when I meant to use TAG to play with them.

nah, you probably want more bottuns on a flight stick, but they're not so good in shooters on a mouse, since you're changing the way your hand is weighing on it at all times, which makes it very easy to mis-click.

well, in my experience. i'm never buying another mouse with a button anywhere near my thumb again.

I like my 3 button combo (I avoid button 4 due to my above posted reasons). Button 1 goes to energy or ballistic, button 2 for missiles, and button 3 for TAG or alternate of 1/2

@martian
BTW Like that mouse, how does it handle outside of MWO?

For some high-skill player, surely. But this layout is sufficient for me.

So far I am satisfied with it.
Its default resolution is sufficient for my everyday needs and when playing MWO, I switch to higher 1200 DPI. That layer of paint gives it a satin-like surface. The photograph above shows it with a glossy finish, while in reality the mouse sports semi-gloss or almost matte coat.

I also rock a cheepo Zalman. I thought it would crap-out on me within 6 months. However, it's proving ot be quite robust. Even through the abuse my younger kids regularly dish out.
