Ragnarok RGN-7K (Mech Assault II)
« on: 11 February 2024, 18:03:50 »

Rumoured and told of in legends, a mech known to weather incoming fire and endure the very destructive forces of its namesake: the word Ragnarök, is spoken in hushed whispers in many a mech bay and shady bar across the Inner Sphere: as an assault mech which was built in the thousands, a design designed by the fabled prophet of Comstar, a mechanical holy warrior that would lay waste to all those who defied the will of Blake and his mad acolytes in this the end of times.

A mech that would shake the stars.

The reality of the situation is somewhat more mundane. A product of obscure military secrets, counter intelligence programs and censored operations files which took place of the middle of the tumultuous Jihad. The Ragnarök is the tragic recipient of many a rumour attached to it, which were perpetuated by Word of Blake misinformation and propaganda campaigns, and the deliberate concealing of its combat history by the Wolf Dragoons, as the mech was almost exclusively field tested against them, with these missions being heavily doctored by the Wolf Net in either an attempt to conceal the nature of these operations, or a cover up a series of embarrassing defeatist. The truth of the matter was not discovered till much later, when unsealed files in the Wolf Net archive were made public following the Clan invasion of Terra. Maintenance notes captured by the Dragoons show the Ragnarök was first built in the 3070s, having been envisioned as the gradual rolling fist of the Blakist war machine, though even after testing the unit quickly fell out of favour due to it clashing with mobile Blakist doctrines, and unique specialised parts integral to its design, namely its Blue Shield Particle Field Damper, and its Type 3 ‘Lava Gun’ Plasma Rifle: both being relatively new or hard to maintain pieces of equipment. Still rumours from captured Blakist pilots tell of a production mishap where the company that built the Ragnarök reallocated production resources meant for other designs, to instead focus on their ‘pet’ project that was the Ragnarök. Advertisements show that the mech was pushed as having been ‘built by Blake’ himself, but whether this is true or just sales propaganda is also unknown. What is 100% known is that almost all known Ragnaroks were assigned to special head-hunter teams of Blake militias meant to peruse and eliminate surviving Dragoon units following the Second battle of Outreach: with such battles having been scrubbed from public records on Wolf Net, or heavily censored for unknown reasons. This has fed rumours of events such as battles for lost Data cores, so called ‘super mech’ designs, to an attempt at concealing horrendous by a desperate leadership of a then faltering mercenary company.

Still, it seems production for the Ragnarök was mysteriously paused sometime in the mid 3070’s, not long after they were created, with one report found by Devlin Stones coalition citing an incident on Terra where a ‘army’ of Ragnarök’s were destroyed. Though this report stands as the only written evidence of the Word of Blake discontinuing the design, the scale of these reports is unconfirmed, or may be a summary of the mechs poor performance as a whole: with it summarising a series of losses of units across a series of battles and fronts, or even just further misinformation to shut down a faltering line which did not conform to more mobile Word of Blake doctrine, or maybe punish a company that attempted to force a design onto a consumer. Still by the time Stones Coalition reached Terra the factories that built Ragnarök’s had been reduced to producing spare parts, and were destroyed in the ensuing fighting: along with most known units:  leading it to be believed extinct in the Inner Sphere. Yet since the Clan invasion of Terra the Wolf Dragoons began to sell the design schematics for the Ragnarök to several companies: all in an attempt to stay financially stable. Though no one has been able to determine as to when or where they acquired a complete set of schematics: or why data traces cite make references to the Star League, rather than Word of Blake design.

Weapons and Equipment

An imposing design, calling in at a hundred tons, the Ragnarok was built to exemplify heavy long-range armament, while also excelling in mid to close range brawls, with most weapons having very short minimum ranges. Armed principally with two arm mounted Gauss: with 4 rounds each, the mech supplements its long-range fire with a single Enhanced LRM 20 in the left torso, though edges into the centre torso, with 2 rounds of ammo, protected by CASE II. The infamous Type 3 ‘Lava Gun’ sits on a fully articulated mount on its right torso, offering a mobile range of fire, at a high degree of accuracy. Indeed, this weapon is partially responsible for many of the rumours around the Ragnarök, with many conspiracy theories citing the ‘Lava Gun’ as a unique and fearsome weapon of star League origin: when in fact was a specialised Plasma rifle which increased accuracy by rapidly firing three slugs in a tight grouping, to increase chances of hitting a target: though with no notable increase in heat or damage. Indeed with only 10 double Heat Sinks, it also ran relatively cool.

For a hundred-ton assault mech though, the Ragnarok is notably under armoured. Having only 16.5 tons of standard protection, when combined with its low speed, the mech in unsealed combat reports was noted to be a vulnerable target, where its low mobility of 20KPH made it easy pickings in close range engagements if not supported. Still, this was compensated for by a mixture of its own potent long-range firepower, and with its enhanced LRM making it difficult to under run. That and the experimental Blue Shield PFD on paper making it less susceptible to PPC fire: however, it was clear from Dragoon notes on captured designs that the unit would quickly give out under sustained fire. Though this is believed to have contributed to the rumour that the Word of Blake had unlocked the secret of energy shielding.

The unit was notable for being a heavily ammo dependent design: yet famously carried largely non-explosive ammo which was positioned around the head body and legs.

Variants

RGN-7KB ‘Ymir’
BV: 2,110
Cost: 13,202,167 C-bills
The Word of Blake pilot known as ‘Ymir’ is somewhat of a mystery, as much as the mech it is itself. Reports even state that it was an entirely separate mech design, though images show that its figure matches the Ragnarök’s profile and design.  Ymir himself was notable as being an unaugmented member of the militia, and being the only notable user of the Ragnarök outside of the special head-hunting teams: with him fighting in multiple engagements in support of conventional militia units. His unit was notably customised by replacing the gauss rifles with 2 LB-10X’s with 2 tons of Cluster and standard ammo. Downgrading the enhanced LRM 20 to a LRM 15 with Artemis IV and 2 tons of ammo, and doubling up the Lava Gun Plasma rifle with a second mounted on the same articulated right torso. Such heat build-up proved dangerous as it could quickly overwhelm the units 11 double heat sinks. Though ‘Ymir’ seemed to prefer standing still and letting his enemies come to him, overwhelming them with critical hits and overheating them with his plasma rifles. Ymir’s ultimate fate is unknown, as the pilot was confirmed KIA several times, though he and his mech were noted to still be fighting well into the Word of Blakes retreat into the Periphery. So, whether or not Ymir was one person, or several, is unknown.

RGN-47K
BV: 2,503
Cost: 21,155,500 C-bills
A mass production redesign unveiled in the 3150s as a result of the Wolf’s Dragoons licensing the design. The modifications made to the 47K were extensive and were either made by companies that were unable to reproduce or unwilling to field the original Ragnarök models. The 47K was a complete redesign of the Ragnarök featuring an endo-steel frame and an upgrade to a 300 series light fusion engine to bring its speed in line with standard assault mechs. Still the design saw compromise in the removal of the Blue Shield PFD and the downgrading of the LRM 20 to a LRM 15 with Artemis IV, as found in the earlier custom Ymir model: with 2 rounds of ammo. The mech also saw an upgrade in the form of a compact Gyro, an additional half a ton of armour, and an extra ton of gauss rifle ammo. More solid, faster and with some excellently padded internals thanks to its non-explosive ammo the mech can keep firing for a while before it needs to pull out to reload. Still, it stands that the mech costs almost twice as much as the earlier models, and the unique part design still persists as an inherent issue.
