Terrain Board - Hex based..
« on: 27 March 2011, 22:29:08 »
I am just getting restarted in battletech and decided to reproduce GEO-Hex.  Took me a bit to find out how large I wanted my flat to flat, then calculate the point distance etc.  But after I created a template, routing out the hexes was easy...  I went with the battletech Dark Ages miniatures for now and put them on GF9 economy bases (50mm).  First picture is of the pink board after I applied a layer of Sand on top of them to give it some texture (and that way where the flock is missing.. it looks like earth)...

I like what you have done.    I am tring to get a board together.  I can't make up my mind if I want to do hex boards or Squares though

I went with Hex because I decided to put roads on the back sides.  I am using the same road patterns as you would see on a "Age of Steam" board game.  I have to admit though it is tough to get it all to line up perfectly.  You will also have to make a template, but if you create a compass, and draw your 3 circles out accurately, you should be able to get it.  (Create a straight line, draw a circle with a diameter equal to 1/2 your point to point distance, then draw a circle at each of the 2 points it intersects with the line.. your triangle is the 2 points the first circle meets the line, and the 4 places where the center circle and the 2 out side circles intersect.)

What size are the hex boards you ended up making

I went with 1.6 ft from flat to flat, that way I works out to 2 1/2 boards to go across a 4" table.  After I got the template done, they really crank out rather quick.  Almost through my first 30 pounds of sand though (lol)

Why did you go with hexagons as opposed to rectangles/squares?

IMO hexes bases look more easy to be stored.

Well, storage is not bad, but I am also laying road segments/paved areas on the back sides of the hexes and having 6 sides allow me for more variation then having 4 sides (or 2 sides for rectangles).  They really are not hard to make after you create a template.
