Missile ammo in the Beginner Box
« on: 11 March 2019, 02:36:59 »
Hey there

I've been playing a scenario in the Beginner Box the other night and I realized that I'm not 100% clear on precisely how ammo works for missiles. The record sheet says "shots" - does that mean individual missiles or actual rounds at which it is able to fire? In other words, does an LRM 5 expend 5 "shots" at a time or just one?

Lastly, if the "shots" are individual missiles, then what happens on the remainder of the shots?

The "shots" are salvos of missiles.  So for your LRM5, with 24 "shots"  that would be 24 salvos of 5 missiles each.

Just don't ask how they all fit in a Mech's chassis, current theorys are shrink wrapped or bags of holding or they expand when exposed to water :D

The missiles go "ding" when there's stuff and can boil an egg at 30 paces.

And rules for the new "Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey IIC" warheads go in fan rules, right? ;)

The fun part is missile launchers should be much smaller.  You get 120 missiles per ton, or ~8.33 kg each.  That puts them at the size of a Folding-fin Aerial Rocket, which was 4 feet (1.2 meters) long, and less than 3 inches wide (70 mm).  So an LRM-5 would be ~1 foot wide and ~8 inches tall, assuming you add half an inch around each rocket for the launcher itself).  An LRM-20 would be about the same size as a Hydra rocket pod, with a little more size due to reloading capacity.

Of course, I'm now trying to imagine loading rockets from an arm ammo location to a torso LRM mount (or vice-versa), considering they are high-explosive and 4 feet long.  That is some good engineering.

I’ve often wondered... if the earliest mech designs hadn’t been... inspired... by Robotech, would our missile launchers still be an Itano Circus of swooping, corkscrewing swarms of warheads or would they be actual missile launchers that fire single projectiles.

More like, say, Gasaraki?  Good question.  Some items like Thunderbolt launchers or rocket launchers (even as external strap ons) might have made a much earlier appearance.

ammo bays are bags of holding

And all weapons fire contains portable holes, thus the reason ammo explosions are so devastating.

This question was answered with the first reply and has wandered far off track.
