Title: Kapteyn Universe (KU) Relaunch - Future Sourcebooks Announced
Post by: Blacknova on 24 February 2018, 17:26:37
Yes, you read that right.

The KU is coming back!

Starting from March 11th, 2018, the story of the KU will be told again, with the original fiction to come first, followed by new source books, and new fiction, all of which tell the story of the KU up to the end of 3032.

After that, the KU moves into uncharted territory, as 3034 dawns and the Inner Sphere enters a new era of war and changes...

The team have been talking over the last few weeks about how we can get the KU going again in a manageable way, and the plan is to tell all the story there is to tell before even considering running the game again. What that means is completing the Field Reports and other KU Sourcebooks, whilst re-releasing the story chapter by chapter, and writing the fiction that got left behind.

That gives us a pretty big pot of releases to start with, 50+ chapters and 4 sourcebooks, once we start the full relaunch on the 11th of March, so that should keep the fans happy as new material is developed.

What we want to do is recruit a crew to work with us in pulling together the KU story from early 3025, through the 4th Succession War to late 3026, the time jump, and the events of 3032. The best thing about the KU is working with a great team and having a great time doing it, so being able to do that again is what we really want to do.

We want to put together a team of people who like to write, have an eye for detail and like working in a collaborative team, where we all feed of each other's ideas. We have set things up to make life easy on everyone and though there is a framework, as ever in the KU, good ideas from everyone will get used.

So if you would like to be part of this, help us tell the story of the KU through fiction and sourcebooks for a while, and bash around in the KU with us again, please let me know.

You can email me at mattacma@gmail.com where I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours in tearing the Inner Sphere apart

Sounds interesting... where can I read some of the background material?
Title: Re: Kapteyn Universe (KU) Relaunch
Post by: Blacknova on 24 February 2018, 18:55:50
Daryk,

The old material has all been taken down, so new reader, and old for that matter, will go from the start.

All of this began one day back in 2010, when I was reading the sidebar on page 57 of the original House Marik Sourcebook, and had an epiphany that started with the question “What if…”

What if  Marik, Kurita, and Liao had struck first, before  Davion and Steiner were ready, all manipulated by ComStar. The 4th War was a very different beast, and what came after completely changed the balance of power in the Inner Sphere.

That slight change, and 26 players thinking their own way produced a dynamic universe that by 3033 is drastically changed from canon.

Ah, thanks!  Sounds like Third Succession War, Part II... :)

Yes, and no. The tempo of this war is far more like the canon 4th War, it gets rather intense for 18 months from 3025 to mid-3026.

So glad to hear this!  The KU book on the Clans is one of my favorites.

There will be more of those to come down the track...

Does it split off before or after the Dragoons switch to working for the Combine?

Dragoons are working with the Combine and cut lose against the Draconis March. They pull a truly sweet move and then an epic series of battles against the Davion Guards.

For some strange reason, the earliest force listing I have is for October 3024, and the story starts in late 3022. There is a bit of fighting about the place over that period, hence the lost units, but it generally matches up pretty well.

Title: Re: Kapteyn Universe (KU) Relaunch - Field Report AFFS COMING SOON!
Post by: Blacknova on 26 April 2018, 02:19:12
FIELD REPORT AFFS - COMING SOON

With the possible exception of the Free Worlds League, the Federated Suns suffered the worst damage during the ill-fated Fourth Succession War. Hammered by the Draconis Combine and Capellan Confederation, the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns was stretched to the breaking point on a number of occasions. However, the valiant defenders of House Davion maintained their legendary resolve and held fast. Even when cut off from its stalwart ally, the Lyan Commonwealth, the AFFS continued to hold. In the aftermath of the war, the tenacity of the AFFS military and Hanse Davion’s singular drive to rebuild the Federated Suns has proven that despite the losses, the FedSuns will not be cowed.

Field Report: AFFS is a Kapteyn Universe fiction supplement designed to offer information on the state of the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns (AFFS) following the Fourth Succession War.

Awesome stuff!  (Even if that typo on the map at the back jars me a little.  ::) )  Dare we hope to see full TRO entries for the various WarShips and other combat units mentioned in the text, like the Stiletto corvette and the Meerkat TD?

That's the prob with ArcGIS, no spell check. There will be full TRO + art for new Warships, but not for ground units, due to art costs and space limitations.

There is only 1 spell checker for ArcGIS and it is not cheap.

What was the Typo?

Even WarShips-only would be fantastic.  8)

What was the Typo?
Check the map title-bar: "Deployment as of Decmber 3032".  :P  There could well be others in the map or text as a whole - I have the kind of eye/mind that picks up on things like that - but that one kind of leapt out at me on first-glance.  ;)

SPOLIER ALERT!!!!!!

Here is a sneak peak of one of the new KU WarShips from Field Report: Capellan Confederation.

Wudang Jian-class Frigate
The Wudang Jian-class Frigates were to be the pride of the Confederation, displaying to the realm’s enemies just what sort of power the Celestial Wisdom controlled.  However, Maximillian Liao, utterly taken with the idea of the new vessels, meddled at every step of the way during the design phase.  Despite the interference, the first ship launched only six months behind schedule, attributed to the late Chancellor’s passing and the fact that two of Capella’s three naval slips are working on the vessel.

Despite Maximillian Liao’s death, the Wudang Jian-class still bears the mark of his desire for the ships, with the hull an overworked piece of naval art that has been quietly described as “…an ostentatious and tasteless affront to the noble traditions of naval architecture.”  The reasons for this backlash are apparent in the styling of the hull, made to look like a phoenix wherever possible.

The nose of the vessel is sharply curved into a beak, with the eyes of the bird each containing a naval autocannon.  Amour has been styled or tortured, depending on the point of view, into an approximation of feathers across the neck of the vessel.  The major heat dissipation systems have been styled into curved stylization of wings approximately three fifths of the way down the vessel.  The final piece of naval art is the sail locker, which folds the sail in under an armored fan, which sits over the engines and is designed to look like a bird’s tail in flight.

All this decoration might work, if it were not marred by the numerous weapons ports and more than a dozen DropShip collars that dot the spine and belly of the hull.  However, expediency prevented additional redesign, which is regrettable, as the crazed layout of the vessel has been a nightmare to construct and technical difficulties in several systems became apparent, just a month after launch.  Compared to the smooth lines of the CCS Shuang Shou Ji, which was constructed next to it, the Wudang Jian is somewhat striking.

Despite looking like something out of a B-Grade holoflick, the Wudang Jian is a powerful vessel, capable of matching anything planned for the fleets of the other Successor States for the immediate future.  The core of the vessel is well reinforced and covered by over 1,000 tons of standard armor.  More advanced armor was planned, however, the ease of working in standards plate had aesthetics win out over practicality.

The Wudang Jian-class is capable of a top acceleration of 3g’s, allowing is to pace the smaller Capellan designs already in service and properly escort fast DropShip convoys.  However, despite the strong structure, problems are expected with the cooling “wings” and the neck of the vessel, as the thinner nature of these areas and complicated structure is somewhat weaker than the rest of the vessel.

The weapons suite is similar to that of the other Capellan vessels already in service, with the main anti-fighter defence being six and a half dozen LRM-20 launchers.  Though this is an enormous number, there are no close in weapon systems, as the Capellan Navy doesn't consider a small one-man fighter to be any threat at that range, or they'd have a tighter defense.

The main anti-ship battery is again a huge number of Killer Whale missile tubes, four dozen in all, backed by twelve Medium and two light Naval PPCs and more than a dozen Class 30 Naval Autocannon.  This heavy armament will likely see more action against Marik and Davion surface targets than other WarShips any time soon.

Fighter support consists of forty Aerospace fighter craft and fifteen DropShip collars.  The large number of DropShip collars was added, like those on the Shuang Shou Ji-class Destroyer, due to constant shortage of transport JumpShips in the CCAF.

Four of this powerful frigate are now in service with the CCN, with the Wudang Jian still holding pride of place in the Capellan Navy as the flag vessel of Admiral Yu Chin, the man responsible for much of the CCN’s rebirth and success in the last twenty years.

SPOLIER ALERT!!!!!!

Here is a sneak peak of one of the HAF brigades from Field Report: Terran Hegemony.

ALLIANCE REGIMENTS

Forming the core of the new HAF, the Alliance Regiments are often eclipsed by the more prestigious and larger, Hegemony Guards, Altairan Dragoons and Solarian Hussars brigades, but they continue to remain stalwart defenders of the reformed Hegemony. One of the largest corps in the HAF, the army counts no less than fifteen Alliance Regiments in its ranks, and despite their position in the HAF the High Command has made it a priority to supply the Alliance units with adequate supplies and advanced technology. Every single command saw action during the reclamation, with Raymond’s Volunteers—formerly known as the 79th CBG—responsible for the capture of Terra Firma during the Fourth Succession War.

CONDITION

Major General Joannah Ben-Shimol was born in the Federated Suns’ Draconis March and, after graduating from Lombard University of Torrence with a degree in political science, enlisted in the Com Guard where she helped shape the early CBGs of the HAF. A survivor of the brutal fighting on Graham IV, Ben-Shimol was first in line to command the new Alliance Regulars corps.

Assigned to Altair along with the Volunteers, Goreham’s Rangers are a fixture among the massive public and industrial work projects propping up across the planet’s surface. As a result, every BattleMech in the Rangers has hand actuators to facilitate their use in construction. Even new pilots are reissued a ’Mech with hand actuators if none are present.

The Kavvana are currently securing recently uncovered SLDF ruins in the former Quantico Marine Fortifications. Rumor is excavation teams have secured hidden Star League manufacturing equipment.

With the successful reintroduction of some of Caph’s more aggressive native fauna to Caph Prime and the decontamination of Brunnel, the Guardsmen and Foresters have spent the last two years reconstructing new barriers to protect the planet’s growing population. The rebound of Caph’s “dinosaurs” has led to a rise in poaching, and many of the regiments’ troops have taken to the wilderness while off-duty as unofficial park rangers to discourage the practice. Most poachers seem discouraged by the presence of the heavily armed BattleMechs.

The Riders and Alliance Guards are currently heading up garrison duty on Bryant where it is assisting reclamation of some of the planet’s Star League-era cities.

Unencumbered compared to their sister regiment, the McKellan’s Marines has been training hard to become the HAF’s premier blue water unit. While they’re not an SLDF CAAN regiment, some of Colonel McKellan’s troops have been experimenting with prototype UMUs.

Formerly the 79th CBG, Raymond’s Volunteers secured Terra Firma alongside the 208th and 388th CBGs. Now on Altair, the regiment is guarding the new aerospace fighter factories.

The Grenadiers and the Legion were instrumental in finally quelling the Sirian guerillas that have plagued Connaught since the Sirian Lancers defected from the Free Worlds League. Consummate anti-insurgent fighters, both regiments are working with the local militia to ensure no Liberation Units remain on-planet.

Colonel Marquez of the Iron Brigade actually requested assignment to Zollikofen—a descendant of his led one of the SLDF resistance cells during the Civil War—where he and his men help rebuild and protect the planet’s valuable mining industries.

Havelock’s Sharpshooters is currently trying to stem the tide of refugees fleeing to the Hegemony from the former Oriente Protectorate in the wake of the recent fighting. With Terran citizenship a long and arduous process, the Sharpshooters have the unenviable job of corralling and detaining illegal immigrants before deporting them back to League space.

Now garrisoned in the former barracks of the Confederation’s Warrior House Ijori, the Capolla Hussars came into possession of many of Ijori’s training materials.

Impressed with the Warrior House mantra and battlefield acumen, the Hussars have begun to embrace the Ijori philosophies as their own.

Offering little except for large open areas to train in, the Errai Dragoons have little to do except assist with Errai’s on-going reclamation projects. The HID recently launched a covert investigation of the Dragoons’ supply department suspecting that some or all may be involved in illegal smuggling and the sale of counterfeit visas.

Han’s Voltigeurs is another command chaffing for some action. However, compared to the troubled Fourteenth, the Voltigeurs have taken to hard training with Nanking’s other garrison units. Impressed with the regiment, the High Command has recently authorized a complete upgrade of the unit’s BattleMechs.

With the division of the now numerous Legions into Maniplus, or Brigades, the older Legions became the defence of the core worlds of the Marian Hegemony.  These are the Legions that were raised from the core worlds of the Hegemony and the Niops system and are, apart from the Praetorian Guard, considered the most reliable of the Caesar’s troops.  Each of the five Legions in the Domum Maniplus (Home Brigade) saw extensive service over the course of the 4th Succession War and have become a battle hardened and powerful force.  The Domum Maniplus takes its role and history very seriously, leading to some to label the formation arrogant.  Though this may be the case, the Domum Maniplus has the record to back its claims and swagger.

The Domum Maniplus is led by Imperator Secundus Willhem Arex, former commander of Legio I, who developed a reputation as a ruthless battlefield commander, totally devoted to the ideals of the Hegemony and the rule of the Caesar.  With his example, the five Legions under his command display a similar dedication to the Marian Hegemony and Caesar O’Rielly.

Percute Maniplus
Percute Maniplus (Strike Brigade) is the mobile reaction force of the Marian Legions.  Originally built around the Legions raised from the former mercenary unit the Blackstone Highlanders, the Maniplus was expanded with the addition of the Praetorian Guards.  Although the Praetorians were the bodyguard unit of the Caesar, they were seen as too valuable to be left guarding Alphard and added to the Percute Maniplus.

Led by Imperator Secundus Shaun Lawer, the Percute Maniplus has roved all across Marian space, responding to incursions and pirate raids.  The only formation with permanently attached DropShip and JumpShip assets, the Percute Maniplus is easily deployed to any crisis point in the Hegemony.

Termini Maniplus
The Termini Maniplus (Border Brigade) consist of the latter raised Legions that were put together with the assistance of foreign powers.  With the largess that the Marians received, six Legions were raised, nearly doubling the strength of the Caesar’s forces.  However, though looking good on paper, the new Legions were staffed by very green troops and fared poorly during the campaigns against the Free Worlds League and Principality of Regulus.  Since the end of the 4th Succession War, the Legions of the Termini Maniplus have been the last in line for resupply and replacements.

The Termini Maniplus is led by Imperator Secundus Robert Kron, the man responsible for training and equipping the six Legions.  Imperator Kron has worked hard to do all he can for his Legions, but their record and lack of pedigree stand against all his efforts.

Coloniae Maniplus
The Coloniae Maniplus (Colonial Brigade) is the latest addition to the forces of the Marian Hegemony.  As the small realm’s territory continued to expand through colonization, the Legions became over stretched and unable to effectively police the realm’s long borders.

In order to lighten the load on the more established Legions, the Colonial Brigade was raised, mainly from settlers of the new worlds and equipped with equipment discarded or mothballed by the more senior Legions.  Though a good idea on paper, the lack of proper attention which was paid to these Legion’s formation has meant that they are disorganized, poorly equipped, and suffering from morale problems.

Commanded by Imperator Secundus Ether Khan, the Coloniae Maniplus has already gained a reputation as a posting for those on the way out.  Imperator Khan has not helped matters by desending into the bottle a regularly degrading performance for her own troops.

SPOLIER ALERT!!!!!!

Here is a sneak peak at the defining Trial of the Clans of the KU, the one that changes much of what you think you know of the Clans. from The Clans: Volume I.

Rite and Trial of Supplication
When invoked by the Grand Council or ilKhan, any accused Clan could refute the charges of a passing vote with a Trial of Supplication. Organized like a typical Trial of Grievance, a losing Clan ran the risk of being placed under the personal administration of the ilKhan for ten years and forfeit their Khans’ right to vote or attend Grand Council meetings. In addition, the loser would have to distribute 19% of their resources (as calculated by the Free Guilds) to be evenly distributed to the other Clans as surkai for their deviation.

However, should a Clan self-invoke the Rite of Supplication before the ilKhan and Grand Council no trial would be fought, and only 9.5% of their total resources would be forfeited to the other Clans. Andery believed a lesser punishment would be a Clan’s reward for freely admitting their honor debt to all of the Clans. While a Rite Clan was still placed under the ilKhan’s jurisdiction for ten years their Khans were still allowed to attend Grand Council meetings.

Regardless of how a Clan entered Supplication, however, the Clan’s Khans were forced to step down from office. Since responsibility of a Clan rested with its leaders, Khans bore full responsibility for their Clan’s deviant ways. In addition, a supplicating Clan was forced to adhere to a two-year moratorium on inter-Clan Trials. While this component of Supplication would cause the most controversy and angst among the martial-drive Clans, it was a necessary part of the healing process. Not to be denied the right to some form of honourable combat, many supplicating Clans would use the time to reorganize and rebuild. Since Supplication did not affect the execution of internal trials, supplicating Clans often fought a large number of internal trials to maintain their fighting edge.

During the ilKhan’s administration, he would be responsible for providing regular status reports to the Grand Council on the supplicating Clan’s progress. Status reports and administration were enforced by the Clan Watch, which became the preferred tool to ensure Supplicants were progressing and adhering to the ilKhan’s tenets.

Very very very interesting stuff!  And as always, damn well written.  And it seems in the KU that Andrey survived, hopefully tempering his quite clearly loony brothers excesses.
