I am really, really surprised no one is discussing "Desperate Measures" and the new secret it revealed...

Can I buy this story alone or are there others I need to read first?

It's the third part of a series but, honestly, you can buy it alone and it makes sense.

I'm not going to say here what was revealed, though it does bust one the theories a lot of people held.

I just don't want to ruin the surprise (hopefully people will be surprised).

And here I opened this thread because I thought it'd be talking about MechCommander Gold. Boo.

It reveals who Devlin Stone is and what happened to Arthur Steiner-Davion?

It's kind of silly to start a thread complaining that a story hasn't been discussed, then refuse to discuss it. You can edit your original post to toss up a big old *SPOILER WARNING* or hunt down whatever the new spoiler field code is, if you're worried about it.

Or I can do it this way and hope people read the story so we can post a Spoiler Warning and discuss it :-)

But I am tired of waiting, so I am going to go change the title.

[SPOILER, SERIOUSLY, YOU'VE BEEN WARNED AGAIN!!]

In the beginning of "Desperate Measures" W.O.B. Precentor Raul Tinker is undergoing Special Operations training on Haddings, in the Lyran Alliance. Haddings is another of the Hidden 5 planets!! There is not one of the Hidden in each Great House.

Specifically, Haddings was nuked during the Amaris Coup and then Lyran and Kurita forces used nukes and chem weapons on it in battles back and forth. By the end of the First Succession War Comstar had removed it from interstellar charts. In 3026 it was re-discovered by the Explorer Corps. The remaining population was living at a 17th Century level.

Well, it was sort of assumed (granted, in-universe) that the Ruins of Gabriel were the Lyran Hidden World. I'm not surprised that it wasn't.

But that's not as big of a deal as the thread's warning had me believing.

Actually.....it's a hidden world, but not a Hidden World. There's a difference.
Eh.

You could always post in the thread created specifically for the story on the BattleCorps Fiction board and then you wouldn't have to worry about spoiler tagging anything. I mean, there is a reason why we set that board up in the first place, you know.

Interesting that there might be more, and more recent, hidden worlds that the Word of Blake and ComStar staged from. The Five Hidden Worlds were all set up by Jerome Blake and Conrad Toyoma, though, and so Haddings is too newly established to have been one of those. As our Spectral Ursine friend said above.

And uh, yeah... there's a subforum to discuss stories. Oops. Oh well, was it a good read?

The idea was briefly discussed on the BattleCorps forum, and dismissed. Haddings does not meet the criteria we know for either Mayadi, Obeedah or Taussen.
And now GhostBear confirmed it's not one of the Five.

(There are many other hidden ComStar worlds such as Farstar and Roxborough, not to mention the Luyten shipyards and Columbus. The Explorer Corps discovered them by the dozend, and some Houses apparently maintain "hidden" worlds as well, see First Strike.)

Yeah, its a good read, though I've only read one story with him so far, theres another?
Two previous Raul Tinker/Francis Layman stories actually:
- Son of Blake
- The Loyal Son
- Desperate Measures
