I would think whatever sells the best.  To my knowledge, the Sharks don't favor any one weapon or trait.  I mean the Grendel/Mongrel varies wildly from the Ha Otoko...

In general it seems an odd combination of manueverability and an unfortunate weapons choice. Looking at the Pirahna, Thresher, Mad Cat Mk II, Dasher II, etc, many Diamond Shark designs have eclectic equipment choices which have their uses, but are of extremely limited utility compared to their peers. There are obviously some exceptions, as with all of the various faction "stereotypes," but this seems to be theirs.

Many of the IIC variants were developed produced by the Diamond Sharks, sometimes in conjunction with other Clans.

Most of the mechs the Diamond Sharks have designed were created with export in mind.  What they use is just a percentage of that production, as far as I can tell.  No real rhyme or reason beyond 'we though it would sell well that year'.
