Request - Sabutai plan-view
« on: 21 February 2011, 06:34:55 »
Does anyone know if a clean, perfectly-perpendicular plan-view of the Sabutai exists anywhere accessible to BT fans, and if so, where?  If not, could I trouble someone to interpolate one from the existing artwork - preferably in a frame that gives overall dimensions?  I make a hash of stick-figures, so there's no way I could ever execute such a project.  [metalhealth]

this was the best cut away i could find, not quite a direct cutaway. it was on sarna, hope it helps a little bit.

"Warriors, not war machines, are the backbone of the Hell's Horses. While others worship the BattleMech as the ultimate weapon, the men and women of this Clan see even this awesome piece of technology as the tool it is. We have held to this philosophy since the days of our first Khan, who knew that the value of the common soldier far outstripped the brute force of the BattleMech. It is one reason our Clan possesses fewer mechs than most, and has led many to underestimate our fierceness and courage. Our survival against all challengers when others have fallen proves the folly of such arrogance, and testifies to the wisdom of our founders."

Always thought the original image was very clear cut.

Actually, I'm looking for a top-down ('plan') view, preferably with dimensions, so I can figure out exactly how much cubage one of these things takes up on a hangar-deck/launch-tube.   :-\  I'm pretty sure there are enough elements in the three canonical drawings (and the mini) for someone to work it out - the mini gives us proportions, and the cutaway gives us the size of the cockpit/ejection-seat for scale - but frustratingly I am not that 'someone', since I don't know the right equations, much less how to manipulate them.  [metalhealth]

Seems to be a matter of descriptive geometry and its projection vectors. Since I've learned such stuff way back during my senior years at secondary school,
I could try myself on the Sabutai, but I wouldn't want to promise anything and even less guarantee any higher degree of precision.

Edit:
A rough first guesstimate would lead me to believe the Sabutai is about 14,5 to 15,5 meters long (without the protruding barrel), and has a wingspan of approx.
80-90% of its aforementioned assumed length.
Note that for this, I made the assumption that Clan cockpits are smaller than modern cockpits due to the Clan Pilot phenotype and as such, an average Clan
pilot's seat needs a seat back that's about 50-60cm across (~10% less than the size of a (admittedly old-fashioned) comparable MartinBaker MK GQ7 ejection seat.
The rest is purely visual judgment off the top of my head.
Bad thing however is, that there's only few reference points when it comes to the Sab's height... I can't say anything about that (yet...).

And if the ejection seat is actually standard sized, the overall size would be about 17m long, with a wingspan of ~15m?  ???

Hmmm, interesting.  Thanks for that.  O0

Well, depends on how you look at it.
If you're going to approx the size of a standard-sized aerospace fighter resembling the Sabutai, you're correct. 17-18m length, 15-16m wingspan.
If you're however planning to put a standard-sized ejection seat in a Sabutai, just because the pilot is not of the fighter pilot phenotype, that,
of course, wouldn't change the fighter's size at all. ;)

Actually, I'm working on a top-down view of the Sabutai - just could need a while because I'm in quite some, let's say, work-life balance hassle right now. :P

As a side note: I was thinking about what to use as a launch bay standard size. I mean, of course, the Riever and the Chippewa as flying-wing designs
wouldn't be able to launch from a bay of, let's say, just 20m across as their wingspan surely lies above that value. That of course infers what's to use as a maximum
wingspan for aerospace fighters without obvious mechanisms to fold wings.

Maybe.

You need some reference points to decide on cockpit size. I suggest looking at the 3055U Visigoth, 3085 Ostrogoth, and even the 3085 Wusun.

Here are some pics that I found while digging through all of my BT files. I believe I downloaded these before the mech scale Sabutai was released on IWM.
