I have finished working on my Columbia Drop Ship Carrier MK I and I am actually surprised at how cheap it is. which makes me wonder what is wrong with the cost calculation function. here is the code for the ship

The following is how the crew of this class of ship is trained:

When general quarters are sounded the crew that are off shift put on there armored space suits
and head to there stations relieving the crew who are on shift so that they can go and put on their
armored space suits. Once that is completed they report in. once all sections have reported in the air
is sucked out and the ship is a exposed to vacuum. Thus there is no danger of being sucked out into space
because of a hull breach. there is also no danger of a fire starting in the middle of battle. The air is
only pumped in once all sections of the ship have checked for any damage and if there is any in that
section it is kept in vacuum until it is repaired. The crew is drilled in this process relentlessly until
they can put on their suits and be at their stations in under 2 minutes. This is why the crew is twice as
large as it needs to be otherwise.

They train in getting to the closet life boat located to their duty station. Once the life boat is
launched it is picked up by the evac transport and the crew is taken aboard and the life boat
is towed into a stationary orbit of a planet if they are close to one. Otherwise the life boats are
grouped together so that the supplies on board them are easy to get to. That is the training for the
combat stations crewmembers. For the passengers they are trained to put on their armored space suits
and immediately head to the evac transport and wait there until they launch or the all clear is sounded.

I increased the amount of HPG Relay ships mainly because the plan that I currently have is that one of them will jump into the outermost limit of the com range of the warship flagship of the group it is assigned to and wait to receive the order to transmit to the HPG Relay ship that is with the rest of the fleet that it is ok to jump. which will not be given until the system is secured and operations can commence on the planet or recovery operations can begin in the system.

I did the previous post's math mainly because I am considering designing a three new ships that will stay with the warship part of the fleet but will not be combatants and they will have three versions because of the three different classes of Battle Carriers.

the job of these ships is to be able to take on all of the attached Aerospace Fighters, Small Craft, and Drop Ships that is assigned to the group it is attached to when any ship goes down. thus no one is stranded in case the group has to retreat.

what do you all think of this idea? please tell me if this idea is way off base in this setting

The following is how the crew of this class of ship is trained:

When general quarters are sounded the crew that are off shift put on there armored space suits
and head to there stations relieving the crew who are on shift so that they can go and put on their
armored space suits. Once that is completed they report in. once all sections have reported in the air
is sucked out and the ship is a exposed to vacuum. Thus there is no danger of being sucked out into space
because of a hull breach. there is also no danger of a fire starting in the middle of battle. The air is
only pumped in once all sections of the ship have checked for any damage and if there is any in that
section it is kept in vacuum until it is repaired. The crew is drilled in this process relentlessly until
they can put on their suits and be at their stations in under 2 minutes. This is why the crew is twice as
large as it needs to be otherwise.

They train in getting to the closet life boat located to their duty station. Once the life boat is
launched it is picked up by the evac transport and the crew is taken aboard and the life boat
is towed into a stationary orbit of a planet if they are close to one. Otherwise the life boats are
grouped together so that the supplies on board them are easy to get to. That is the training for the
combat stations crewmembers. For the passengers they are trained to put on their armored space suits
and immediately head to the evac transport and wait there until they launch or the all clear is sounded.

I think there's something wrong with the program you're using to calculate cost... 40 drop collars should drive that up to truly insane levels...

I am waiting on the next version of megameklab which is supposed to have that issue fixed. my main concern with this version is if I have put to many Laser AM and Micro-Pulse Lasers on each arc with 233 of each on each arc to give me 699 out of 700 points in each bay. I was wondering what would be a possible more reasonable number of points to use?

It's definitely doing something wrong... even assuming its costs for the KF components are correct (and I don't believe they are), that would make the ship over 40,000,000,000, and the total it's giving you is only 2,460,913,120.  StratOps page 158 has the costs.

Daryk is correct, it's not calculating correctly.  Here's what the breakdown should look like:

So before looking at other equipment, the warship's K-F drive on its own costs more than 50 gigabills.

Looks to me like you should be very wary about the costs of warships in whatever program you are using.

Edit: You mentioned you were using megamek lab, it looks like once the costs hit somewhere close to 85,000,000,000 c-bills it rolls over into negative numbers.  Looks like you might have had this issue before based on some of the bugs issues I see for the program.

yes which is why I am waiting to make any other versions of this ship until the next version of megameklab is released because the issue that is causing the cost miscalculation is supposed to be fixed in that version. which is why I am currently focused on other parts of the design like I said before.

What both of us are basically saying is that you should brace to reduce the number of drop collars and weapons significantly.  StratOps can give you an idea of the reasonable limits.

Oops, I actually focused on the latter part of that comment when I read it... and should actually answer that question.

1400 damage for each arc of missile defense is massive overkill - at least if you are using the rules as written, without taking fluff into major consideration.  There are no missiles that need more than 10 capital scale damage (or 100 standard scale damage) to defeat, and any AMS will fire at each and every missile coming into their range.  Using the rounding rules, you only need 32 AMS in an arc to defeat any missile in the canon rules - 34 if you are don't want to take advantage of the rounding rules.  This means that it is vastly more effective to mash more and more heat sinks into a ship, than layers and layers of AMS.  Figure out the heat needed to take down the number of missiles you feel is appropriate each turn and calculate your heat sink installation based on that number.

I have been looking back over the composition of my entire fleet after I finished adding up everything warship and support and I was wondering if I have put to many ships in the fleet. so far I have seven squadrons in the fleet that can operate on there own because I have designed the fleet that way by making sure each squadron also has a support element. each squadron is centered around either a Columbia Class Battle Carrier MK IV, Mercury Class Battle Carrier MK I, or a Nova Class Battle Carrier MK I.

my question to all of you is should I decrease or increase the amount of warships and support ships that each squadron is assigned. if so by how many and of which class should I add.

I have decided it was time to post the designs for all of my ships once again because I have actually gotten someone that is willing to look at my designs and make sure that everything is valid. I have asked him for his help with this because of the problem with megameklab saying things are valid but because of errors in the code things are not completely done.

The designs for all of the ships that are my personal designs are in the first warship folder as are their descriptions. My modified versions of 2ndAcr's designs are stored in the folder Quest modified designs. The warship descriptions for these designs are stored in the warship folder. all of my personal designs as well as my modified versions of 2ndAcr's designs have been exported to both HTML and TEXT and are stored in the relative folder under a subfolder with the appropriate name.

I have a question about the grav decks.

Currently I have maxed out the amount of Grav Decks that I can have on all of my ships. The question that I have is if this is a good thing to do or if I should limit how many Grav Decks that I have on each ship. The main reason that I am asking this is because recently I have been watching reruns of Babylon 5 and I realized that the Grav Decks probably affect how a ship will handle in combat. Please advise

grav decks are supposed be shut down during maneuvering , ie not running .

I have received some feedback on my designs from my beta and I have implemented the appropriate changes throughout the following designs:

Columbia Class Battle Carrier MK IV
Mercury Class Battle Carrier MK I
Nova Class Battle Carrier MK I

the changes are mainly less cargo because it was more than the ship could handle when the weight was calculated, when I made that change I also noticed that I had not doubled the amount of passengers that the ship could handle when I doubled the ship bay personnel so I made that change to bring that area in line with my stated training for each ship.

I can see 1 or 2 per task force but not each warship

the main reason is that instead of having dedicated hospital space onboard ship they only have triage areas and the injured are sent to the hospital ships as soon as possible thus each ship is assigned a dedicated one which depends on the size of the ship which one they get.

I have been reading some fanfiction about nbsg that is set at the time of the fall of the twelve colonies and how a fleet of survivors set themselves in order and they talk about the people working for 4 hours on and 4 off and so on. which got me to wondering how is the crew requirements set for the ships in megameklab? the reason I ask this is even though I have doubled the size of the crew on all of the designs that I have modified I am trying to figure out how that would work shift wise. for example is it 12 hours on and 12 off with two shifts worth of crew included or is it something else. any help would be appreciated.

I usually assume a three section rotation, and 8-hour watches make the most sense with that.  Ship crews are assumed to do all required maintenance, so they should have enough time for that on top of standing watch.

I am looking for some opinions on my designs for the Columbia, mercury, and nova class battle carriers. I have recently learned that 12 laser ams systems is enough to take out both versions of the killer whale missile and any other missiles that are launched with it so long as I have enough heatsinks. my question is this I currently have 30 clan laser ams systems in every arc, should I decrease this to 15 or 12 or leave it alone?
