Space Dreadnought Arizona!
« on: 20 March 2020, 21:37:12 »
I am only vaguely sure what caused this insanity.  It's a mix of World of Warships Blitz, finding a model of the Arizona in our storage unit, and having not designed anything in Battletech for a while.

No fluff yet, but there is a method to my madness.

Q: Why the Light SCCs?  They're more than 3 times as big as a 14"/45 gun.
A:  Yeah, I know, but it was either that, or improved heavy gauss rifles.  They're bigger, yes, but these also meet the purpose of your main standoff weapon.

Q: But why 24?
A: Because you've got both a top and bottom in space.  This way, you can argue that the original top guns are "left", and the new ventral side guns are "right" or something.

Q: That's a lot of SCL/1s.
A:  Yes, yes it is.

Q:  So, no 5"/51s?
A:  Nope.  Replaced with SCL/1s in the secondary gun role, serving as both anti-ship and anti-fighter.

Q:  Barracudas?
A:  Well, they're not 21" torpedo tubes, but...

Q:  That's a notable increase in mass.
A:  Yeah, KF drives aren't lightweight.  Consider we're actually *lighter* than the original Pennsylvania class BBs were once you remove the KF drive.

Q:  Only 1/2 thrust?
A:  Only 10 knots cruise, and 21 knots max?

Q:  So, did they salvage this from Pearl Harbor?
A:  YMMV.  It's one of the reasons I haven't written up fluff for this.

Q:  So, COVID-19 social distancing getting to you, eh?
A:  Yes, yes it is.

Q: Did you just edit this and post the PDF?
A:  Yes, yes I did.

An interesting take on a mini Warship. I like it.

Now I just need to find a USS Arizona mini that's comparable scale to BT WarShip minis.

It needs more AMS, and I can't help but notice it has well over 5,000 tons of cargo space remaining...  ^-^

The AMS were basically replacing the four 3" guns which, amusingly, aren't much heavier, though I could easily add another four at least, since I missed that the 3" guns got replaced by 5"/25s in her refit.

The Pennsylvania got those in 1942, as well as her secondary armament being swapped from twelve 5"/51s to sixteen 5"/38s. Arizona never got that refit.

Since you brought it up in that other thread, I think a LNPPC would fit as a "Wave Motion Gun"...  ;)

Thinking of it for a Space Battleship Texas, or maybe Iowa.

Woo!  Glad you're thinking about it!

I'm old enough that Star Blazers was one of my earliest introductions to anime as a kid, and the idea of converting an old floating battlewagon into a combat spaceship therefore amuses me to no end, especially with the USS Midway as my closest museum ship - the USS Dolphin, another local museum ship, is a lovely boat, but probably too small to...

Wait.

The Dolphin has an 800-ton displacement.  Suddenly I'm picturing a custom submersible DropShuttle carried aboard a converted USS Midway that's been converted to a Primitive JumpShip.

Questions (because anything vaguely channeling Star Blazers/SBY2199 vibes gets my attention)...

Were you thinking about the semi-cannon SBY Arizona seen on various MAD video clips, when you placed weapons?

or looking at more cannon designs (like the Class-D ships or the Cruiser/Patrol Cruisers with Two 2-Barrel turrets top and a single 2-B underside?
Even my Page posting rate is better than my KPD rate IG...

You mean this one?

I hadn't really because I'm not sure those carry over well when adapted to Battletech's weapons arcs for capital vessels, and I wasn't really familiar with them anyway.  I ended up treating the "left" side as the ventral guns, and the "right" side as the dorsal guns, essentially adding another 12 guns to the bottom side of the ship.

If I had to do it over again, I'd probably do it differently.  It's also something I struggled with using full NACs on my take on the Charger class.  Doing this one over again, I'd probably consider something closer to that artwork, with one triple-turret forward (turret 2), one triple-turret aft, one on each broadside (literally the side turrets), and then figure out what to do with turret 1, which can't fire forward, but can fire to each fore-side.

I very much am open to suggestions.
