The 9AB model Centurion was one of numerous testbeds produced by Corean Enterprises at the behest of the Federated Suns government, interesting for its exotically unimaginative main weapon and, as rejected prototypes go, for having such a long and active service life. The first 9AB was constructed in late 3025, making it farther than many of its contemporary prototypes when it was deemed "potentially field ready" the following year. In what would later become standard practice during the technical boom of the 3040s, the prototype was handed over to an active combat unit for field testing. In this case, the mercenary company Chasing Serenity. The formation was happy to accept the mech as partial compensation for lossess sustained during the Bastrop campaign, and more than willing to provide regular detailed reports on its performance to the AFFS for however long it remained in operation. Given the experimental, unstable nature of some of the technology used, and the pilot's tendency to get in over her head, the AFFS assumed they'd get a couple years at most of useful data.
By the time the project was finally cancelled in the mid 3040s, the Centurion continued to serve with the mercenary unit (now a full battalion). As of 3071, it remains in service, having seen action in nearly every conflict faced by the Federated Suns since the Fourth Succession War. The pilot and technical crew attribute this not to any particular capabilities of the mech, nor to their abilities in repairing it, but merely to the machine's spiteful refusal to die.
As many as two lances of additional 9AB variant Centurions were produced before the program's cancellation. Aside from the original given to Chasing Serenity, none are believed to be still operational in any capacity.
Notable Pilot: Colonel Amy Pearson, Chasing SerenityColonel Pearson has always been quick to lead from the front, a tendency that has inspired loyalty and frustration in equal measure from her troops, and almost gotten her killed only a few times. This tendency was also what cost then Captain Amy Palmer her prized Shadow Hawk during the Bastrop uprisings in 3027. Though as a unit commander she was happy to accept the new Centurion offered to her by the AFFS, she only ended up piloting it out of necessity, with the unit too strapped for cash to provide a more suitable machine. Some have compared her relationship with the machine to the first act of a romantic comedy. She found the mech's lower mobility endlessly frustrating, its heat demands agravating, and the increased maintenance bill (caused primarily by how hard she pushed it) painfully irritating. She kept piloting the mech for over two decades, however, even as the unit expanded, giving her plenty of alternatives to choose from.
For all her complaints, Colonel Pearson proved absolutely deadly at the controls of her modified Centurion, accumulating a kill rate on par with some of the best mech pilots in the AFFS. She proved especially adept at outmaneuvering even normally faster foes through both her keen tactical abilities and judicious use of her mech's supercharger.
Finally accepting that she could lead the entire unit more effectively from a command center or mobile HQ, Colonel Pearson stepped down as an active mech pilot in 3053. Before passing what was now the "family" mech on to her freshly commissioned son Samuel, however, she had the mech extensively refitted with recovered technology to suit its role as the command mech of his scout lance, describing it as "finally fast enough."
Unlike his mother, Samuel Pearson (now a major and serving as the battalion executive officer) has expressed nothing but love for his machine. Much like his mother, however, he's also used it to regularly get into, and out of, more trouble than he should as a senior officer in a mercenary battalion.
