.RL's Miniature Pictures (updated 4/15/2020)
« on: 25 June 2019, 22:17:05 »
Hello all,

I've decided to make a thread with my Battletech Miniatures. They are not even close to being done, but I plan to post them all in this thread as they progress.

There are many I want to touch-up, because they are older and bland, or just to add improvements.

I'll edit this first post as I add them. I'll post as I feel the specific unit is complete.

I hope you enjoy and like them.

I would like feedback on the picture quality and lighting. I am still messing around with the distance of the lights, and the camera (phone) picture settings. These were done with flash on and I feel it captured the details better... but pending feedback (background too dark? too much glare?) I can try different ways of taking pictures.

*** 2019.06.26 Edited image sizes. Follow provided link for full size.

*** 2019.07.26 Changed all images to new photos taken without flash!

They look great! 8)  My one piece of advice for the pictures would be to ditch the flash.  I use three to four lamps with daylight spectrum light bulbs.  Gets rid of the heavy shadows.  Give that a try and see what you think. :)

Gorgeous minis, but please reduce the width of your pictures a bit... having to side scroll is a bummer.  Also, on the first image in this thread, the focus is a little tight.  Most of the image is crisp, but the near end of the AC/5 is out of focus.

Reduced width to 850, hopefully that works better for most people.

I have a similar set-up, though I don't know if the lights are daylight spectrum. Flash still gave that depth which makes them pop more. I will post some comparison shots.

1. Flash. Lights close. Adjustments = Light = -25%. Color = NA. Pop = +25%. <-- Detail pops best, but the color is off. Highlights pop. All detail is captured, maybe too intensely?

2. Flash. Lights farther. Adjustments = Light = -25%. Color = NA. Pop = +25%. <-- Same as above but darker

3. No Flash. Lights close. Adjustments = NA.  <-- Dull. Some glare. They do not represent the mini when you look at it while holding it in your hand.

4. No Flash. Lights farther. Adjustments = NA. <-- Same as above but darker

5. No Flash. Lights close. Adjustments = Light = -25%. Color = +25%. Pop = +25%.  <-- This might be the one that represents the mini the best if it were in your hand. Maybe further adjustments would fix it more. Overall this, side by side, seems to be the best IMHO.

6. No Flash. Lights farther. Adjustments = Light = NA. Color = NA. Pop = +25%.<-- Same as above, but darker (what did I expect, the lights are farther away...  :P)

Thoughts on best option?

To give you a better idea of what I'm using =

[/url]

Both sides are the same, 2 lamps on each side (one yellow one white per side, though I can change this to all yellow or all white).
Lights are pointed slightly upward, to hit the white-sheets higher (noticed this reduced glare and mimicked sun-light better)

The fifth picture does look the best to me eye.  And your setup looks great.  I haven't built a light box yet, though this is encouraging me to do so.  Do you have an overhead panel for it, or do you leave it open?

I don't know what the policy is on linking items to purchase, so I'll send you a PM when I get home with a link. I did not make this, I bought it. Reasonable price IMO. Two sizes available, this is the bigger one which is a 24" cube, thr other is 16".it came with the lights, backdrops, and camera/cellphone holder with mini tripod.

I do not cover the top, hadn't considered it. It does not come with a way to do this unless you maybe use one of the backdrops to cover it. I don't know if this would be beneficial, maybe adding a white backdrop over it will bounce more light off, making it clearer. I can give it a go.

After the side by side, I do think the 5th is probably the best option. I might retake these pictures, and replace the ones in this thread with them.

Hello again BattleTech enthusiast,

I am posting a commission I did for a buddy in Indy.

Unfortunately, these were the only pictures I took before I handed them off. If i still had them, I would take better pictures.

The intent of this unit, to my understanding, was to fit into a campaign he GM's with his group, and essentially, the OpFor (this battalion) would get more difficult as they progress.

Hello once more BattleTech enthusiast,

I am posting a second commission I did for a buddy in Indy.

These will get boxed up sometime this weekend, and sent-off to him. After this post, I will be away for awhile finishing off some other armies that need improvements, and which I’ve been ignoring. As I complete them, I will post them.

Lol, thanks, but it's not really like that. I am using the word "commission" loosely here. Though I do get stuff in return, they are mostly rare 'Mechs that I've wanted to have and are hard to come by. I've mostly painted them for him because he runs a pretty large group with awesome story-telling, and I picture these units facing-off against each other. I just find it cool to have paint-scheme matching units on the field, and I think it adds more depth and flavor to campaigns and playing in general (as opposed to bare metal, primer painted, mismatched units, etc).

Let the Clan Invasion begin!

Here is my Clan Wolf mini-cluster. It was originally painted for Alpha Strike. Alpha Strike is the whole reason why I have large formations, that is until I played Classic and enjoyed it more. I just finished touching these up, and including a few units I had not painted yet.

Awesome paint jobs . How do you do your decals? I've just started using them and the first batch turned out Meh, I can still see the clear sections around the decals.
