Great unit, evil for indirect fire spotting, recon, chasing recon units, VTOLs... handy and cheap. Thanks for bringing to the fore such unit Hellbie! O0 O0

Yeah, that's the thing- a Savvie will take a slight bit more damage to kill, but in general it's going to die from the same hits that kill a Gabriel- a large pulse laser is going to pretty much cut either one in half. So... might as well spring for the usefulness of the turret rather than a few extra points of armor that really won't help you in the end.

(It should be noted that as a huge fan of the Savannah Master, that shouldn't be taken as knocking the old sled- simply that the Gabriel is my preferred option.)

Actually the Savannah Master can take a Clan Large Pulse Laser to the front, and live.  Sure, mighty drafty for the pilot, but he's a live and the structure (barely) untouched.

Five points of armor?  An Inner Sphere Medium Pulse Laser will kill a Gabriel from any angle.  While the SM will shrug off even a flank hit from the same weapon, though the Clan version will take one out from the side.

Yes, on the Savvie's FRONT. The one you MUST point at the enemy at all times if you're going to snap off a laser shot of your own, thus forcing you to always pick maneuvers that either give you a shot, or gain that extra couple of hexes of movement to get a better modifier- an issue the Gabriel doesn't have.

Neither is a bad unit. Neither is a clear step above the other. But the added toughness of a Savannah Master compared to the Gabriel is very much illusion-based- yes, it has more armor on the front, and far fewer tactical options other than pointing that front at the enemy.

It's a pity that the Taurians never got a mag clamp-equipped battlesuit in significant numbers, because the Gabriel would be a great transport for them.

They do get the Marauder....

But how much would a squad of them slow it down?

Amazingly enough, only one MP I believe. Suspend your disbelief, it's more comfortable that way.

Gonna have to be since a Squad of them outweigh their chosen ride. It really should lose, at the very least, half of its MP because of that

Think about it, a Point of Elementals weighs 25% of the total weight of a Fire Moth ---- but it doesn't lose any movement for carrying more weight than it can carry as cargo......

Always been something I have wanted addressed, but people get frustrated when I ask

Meh. I have very strong suspenders holding up my not-pants of disbelief, and thus have no qualms with simply not caring. Rules say a Gabby can haul a squad with minimal slowdown, then bully for the Gabby. People wanna come up with alternative rules, they've got an entire subforum to play around in.

Bonus points, the Gabriel can still use its laser while carrying the kids around.  O0

Now, here's the visual.... a 6 man Word of Blake Purifier squad, hitching a ride on either a Gabriel, or a Savannah Master......

That's nothing. Play games with trailers and your ride might just find itself getting faster

With their mimetic armor, it wouldn't be much of a visual.

And yes, I know. At that speed the mimetic armor wouldn't hold up so it would be a visual. But that ruins the joke :)

And hey. Its 3145. Why go for an ERML variant, when you can go for a Clan ERML variant? :)

Could still echo whatever camouflage/regimental colors the hovercraft itself comes with, I suppose.

I'd be more partial to a Heavy Medium Laser or Improved Heavy Medium Laser myself. The Gabriel operator uses the same tactics they've always used, but inflict much more damage when they connect.
Be the Loremaster:

Battletech transport rules take a very feline approach to moving troops in a combat zone: If they fits, they ships.

Given how good Gabriels are at pouncing on stragglers and isolated units, and the obvious counter to them being to bunch up and turtle for a few turns while you whittle down their numbers, I want to pair them with stuff that punishes such turtling, or takes advantage of it. Artillery units and things that can serve liberal doses of Swarms are obvious choices, though high altitude bombers* can also be useful, as can ginormous linebreakers such as Banshees that are designed break up dense formations with the threat of powerful pointblank attacks.

*emphasis on HIGH, people. Dense formations are murder inn any aircraft dumb enough to fly low enough to be shot at conventionally.

So, maybe a couple of Gabriels per company that swap the MLs for TAG lasers? >:D

Hmmm...TAG can assist orbit-to-ground fire missions, correct?

Not being overly serious here (a Gabriel wouldn't survive being caught in any splash from that anyway), it's just an...inspiring image. >:D

It wouldn't, no, but it sure is fast enough to ESCAPE the blast radius in time...

Always figured that was something to do with the technologies involved with Omni-tech: i.e. Toads would always be locked in and ride on the same spots on the 'Mech, so their mass and balance can be easily calculated. Strapped on cargo on the other hand wouldn't have a preset in the computers for weight or balance distribution...so the computer would be continually readjusting the mass and balance....(which in game terms means the slower speed as the computers would put an artificial governor on the top speed to keep from being over taxed.)

You mean, "Cool guys don't look at explosions"? ^-^

So queue the slo-mo hero shot of the Gabriel racing away with titanic volumes of fire raining down from the sky in the background? ;D

Yeah, I would like to see a TAG . . . or better yet, for 3145 a ERSL & Clan Light Tag.  But yes, I like the iHML option as well- nice 10 point punch and . . . well, who cares if the laser can explode?  If it does the hovercraft went before it.
