Invasion Boats! (design challenge)

RFP:  Design the cheapest mass-produced combat dropship(s) you can.  CUT CORNERS!!!!

Needs to:

Be able to:

(And/OR list)

4 Battlemechs
OR
12 Platoons of infantry
OR
4 Heavy Vehicles
OR
16 Battlesuits (15 for clan)
OR
8 Light Vehicles
OR
8 Fighters
OR
Any combination of the above.


Does not need: More than enough fuel to make a controlled landing.  (that is, make ONE controlled landing), and one takeoff. 

This dropship needs to be as cheap as possible for what it does, it doesn't need to be fast, it doesn't need great armor, it doesn't need lots of weapons, but it MUST be inexpensive, mass-producible, and armed with at least token weaponry.

Cut. Every. Corner.  Show the Galaxy what "Made by the lowest bidder" really, honestly, looks like.

Are you sure about those 8 ASFs?

That seems like the strictest demand.

The Federated Suns looking for a cheaper, faster to produce landing ship developed the Landing Craft Mech.  The end result was a 1,500 ton Dropship that could comfortably transit from a standard jump point in most systems, deliver a lance of mechs, and return again.

To help ensure the Landing Craft Mech could achieve this mission a quartet of Laser AMS guns were strategically placed to help defend against incoming missile fire and a quartet of ER Large Lasers were also added to provide a token defense against enemy ASFs.

Armor broke from normal traditions as a Spheroid craft it was realized the Aft would be the most likely location to be hit as enemies would try to oppose landings with surface to air fire.  Enough armor was applied to all facings though that most weapons would not automatically cause problems for the Dropship.

At a per unit cost of 103,306.742 C-bills it is arguable exactly how well it meets the low cost to produce criteria but most agree the efforts to ensure it will not be easily destroyed make up for it.

When you say 1 takeoff, are you refering to it return to space after the invasion hits?

When you say 1 takeoff, are you refering to it return to space after the invasion hits?

Not necessarily. It has to arrive at the target, if there's still fuel left over, great, but not entirely necessary.  It DOES need to be able to lift once fully loaded to dock with the jumpship to go outward, but it doesn't have to have enough fuel to retreat unless y ou really like your crews. >:D

Fuel is so cheap, I'm not sure how much you could really shave off the cost by shorting it.  My benchmark is 75.6M C-Bills, and crams 630 tons into a 1,000 ton hull.  The food weighs almost as much as the fuel (43.5 tons vs. 51, which  includes the pumps).

I want you to imagine a procurement office, now, I want you to imagine t his procurement office is staffed by guys appointed by a guy who swore up and down he was going to cut the military budget and 'bring it in line', while at the same time this mealy-mouthed fellow, (to avoid being crucified for having a weak military policy) is swearing up and down that he's making the military 'leaner'.

Now, imagine t his guy, he's been to all sorts of symposiums on "Leaner/Meaner" put on at 2M CB a pop for years, run by pop-psychology/pop-economics people who don't have a clue, but will take your money in exchange for the most recent buzzword, and they sell a lot of books. books with titles like "Save your way to wealth" and "How to make a lot of small cuts in necessary things to save a buttload of money" not to mention "Save with Volume Pricing!"

The sort of "Economists" who might think strapping a gun to the top of a bulldozer is as good as a main battle tank, for a fraction of the price.

THIS is the guy you've got to sell to.
