Battletech Heavy Metal
« on: 29 April 2024, 23:53:40 »
Was just sort of having a random thought exercise about how many mechs/other units in Battletech have names that tie in with heavy metal or hard rock bands.  I'm pretty sure most of them are coincidental but I was wondering just how many people could think of.

Mastodon (pretty obvious)
Vixen/Incubus (two bands for the same mech)
Behemoth
Man O' War/Gargoyle (another two bands for the same mech)

Those are just a few I thought of off the top of my head, what else can other people come up with?

Marauder
Corporal: Were under attack general.
General: who's attacking?
Corporal: Those 25 Urbanmech Mechwarriors you offended last week on Solaris.
General: That's....unfortunate. Could you remind me what I said to offend them?
Corporal: You said their Urbanmechs look like Locust-1Vs Sir.
General: ahh... I remember now.

No Wasp? Serious fail!

Apparently Stinger is also a band.

For clarity, the 'Mech is spelled Man O' War, but the band is just Manowar.

There is the mercenary unit The Metallicon, which I think is a reference to some band or another, maybe Jethro Tull.

And while I am disappointed in BattleTech writers (including myself) over the lack of some kind of unit named Therion, I do not hold my breath for a Toad the Wet Sprocket OmniMech.

Now I'm thinking of making mechs based off of heavy-metal bands now; like the Overkill: with like three or four AC/20's; I don't know how I'm going to do it.

or the Metallica-mech, which is just as similar mech the other side has.

I'd say that Overkill is a star of Hellstars.

There are a few punny units out there not associated with bands, like the J. Edgar Hover tank.

I have to say that I've always kind of hated that hovertank, since it's name exists pretty much 100% for the pun with no in-universe logic for why anyone would choose that name.

I mean, J. Edgar Hoover was a person in-universe.  Although that's probably a pretty obscure figure to pluck out of history to use for a pun in the year 2722.

Like it's any different than 'Mechs being called after Heavy Metal bands?

This has changed as of the IlClan Recognition Guides, thankfully.

I don't think any of these are named for the bands, it's just coincidence. They're all real English words.

In many cases, the name was used for a battlemech before the band formed.
