Hey, folks who have participated in or looked in on my challenge over in the battlemech design board, did you know that primitive jumpships and most naval weapons also meet the tech level requirements?  ;D

(Oddly not naval missiles, though, which I had long assumed to be the simplest of naval weapons. It's probably for the best though, since there's also no AMS).

For those who don't want to click the link, the idea is that the successor states begin tangibly recovering their tech base and industry towards the middle/later half of the 30th century, and by 3025 have recovered to the point that all tech level d (inner sphere only) technologies are widely available to them. In the case of combat capable jumpships, I'm assuming the houses started small (in the 50,000 to 150,000 ton range) and were pretty happy there until SOMEONE (currently leaning towards the Combine) whipped out a new big gun, an actual battlecruiser. Forcing their neighbors to scramble for a counter, and THEIR neighbors to scramble for a counter to their counter.

At present, the houses each field a fleet of twenty to thirty battlecruisers (or battleships, dreadnoughts, or the like depending on the state identifying them). They don't have a lot of support assets yet (assault dropships and fighters are still a bit scarce), and they're not entirely sure how to handle things. Unwritten agreements tend to say they should only be used against spaceborn combatants, not against ground targets or non-hostile civilian vessels. Who knows how long that'll last...

So here's two examples. The Sultan is the granddaddy, an attempt to clone the star league era Cameron using less sophisticated technology (which they shouldn't have bothered with. The huge jump core required so much redesign work it might as well have been a new ship). The Auriwandalo is one of the more recent designs (commonwealth). Shorter jump range, but it hits harder, has better AA coverage, and is better at supporting a task force. More detailed fluff will have to wait until I figure out more details of the setting.

Good news is the lab boys say the symptoms of asbestos poisoning show an immediate latency of 44.6 years. So if you're thirty or over you're laughing. Worst case scenario you miss out on a few rounds of canasta, plus you've forwarded the cause of science by three centuries. I punch those numbers into my calculator, it makes a happy face.

That's an interesting idea.

The Free Worlds League found itself lagging behind the other Successor states after the turmoil of Anton's revolt. A plan was put in place to resurrect a number of Star League Naval vessels to serve as a stopgap while a proper navy was designed.

KaliYama was selected to refit the three broken Sovetskii Soyuz vessels that the FWL military had located within their borders.

An entirely new KF-Drive was built and installed on site at tremendous financial and manpower cost and the complicated Killer Whale and Barracuda missiles were replaced with KaliYama's own Type V LRM launchers. To the refurb teams surprise, underneath a thin layer of armor plate, mounting locations for 24 Sorenstein-45a Naval Lasters were located. The lasers were painstakingly copied from surviving museum pieces located. The Naval PPCs on the other hand were originally to be omitted when cache was discovered while civil engineers were expanding some HPG facilities for Comstar on Kendall. The original Imperator 20 Series Naval Autocannons were replaced by simpler designs developed by KaliYama.

Aside from replacing the KF drive with a simpler design that weighs 64,000 tons more the most complicated part of the refit was removing the sophisticated Hornblower Computer system and replacing it with simpler manual systems that would avoid the "brain seizures" that caused the class to fail so spectacularly during the liberation of the Terran Hegemony from the Usurper.

After phenomenal effort three refitted Sovetskii Soyuz vessels bolstered the FWL navy's fleet of corvettes and destroyers.

KaliYama has proposed that a new class of vessels be built around the KF Drive and components that they had developed for this project.

No fluff for this, because the most obvious choice would be the Capellans, the only group we know for sure had Black Lions during the First Succession War.  That said, it would be easy enough for anyone with access to old Hegemony worlds to scavenge from could theoretically put one of these together, as could the Capellans or their neighbors.

Swapped the Killer Whale launchers for an equal number of NL/35s, which are only slightly more massive, and function well in the anti-fighter role.  And holy crap do Primitive JumpShip rules allow you to pile on the armor.

And holy crap do Primitive JumpShip rules allow you to pile on the armor.

It looks like it is letting you have 1 ton of armor for every 12 tons of structure, instead of the 1 ton for every 50 tons of structure.

Is that an error or a rules change that I missed?

That's how it was written in Interstellar operations. Unfortunately, (or fortunately depending on your point of view) a recent errata has changed it back to 1 ton for every fifty points.

So Gio's black lion would need to be revised.

Interstellar Operations, at least the copy I have, has Primtive JumpShips divide SI mass by 12, not 50, for maximum armor tonnage.  It's on pages 130-131 of my copy (which lists itself as "Final").

Dammit.  Linky?  I don't have that errata. :(

They didn't want the primitive ones to be clearly superior in a certain area, as i understand it.

Dag nabbit, that got brought up in Beta, along with the minimum KF drive size, and they decided to patch the KF drive size issue, but not the armor values for final print.  Grr...

OK, went back to my original Black Lion I's armor (ie. the canon published value):

Really good designs, loving where this is going :D  Although I do wonder what Kerensky's lot will think if/when they turn up.  (Save the obviously excited and happy noises from the Ravens as they could suddenly be relevant :p)

==Overview:==
Comissioned in the late 2960s the AEgir Battleship was to be the final word in
Naval development.

What eventually emerged sixty years later from the Arc Royal Ship yards could
definitly be described using some very final words.

The initial design requirements called for a weapons loadout capable of
defeating any Starleage Era Battleship, a 20 LY jump range and a 3Gs of
aceleration.

The final product while technically capable of breaking any known design in
two featured an array of short ranged Naval Autocannons and a massive rail gun
that is only suited to hitting stationary targets like moons or continents.
The tatical and strategc mobility of the design was also consdered
lackluster.

But the addition of an outstanding six docking collars and 108 aerospace
fighters has given the class life.

The Lyran Generals find the expansive guest facities to be exceptional as the
ship has a thousand first and 2000 second class quarters including a gym and a
pool.

In addition to the namesake of the class, there are five other AEgir
Battleships in the Lyran fleet.

==Overview:==

Lyran Design Boondoggle Incoming
Congrads you did it, the Social Generals must love it, Do we have Social Admirals too?  What the hell you have a mobile party ship with the passenger ability, truly evil thought selling 1 off to the MOC for a Circus Ship.

But really NAC35, why not cut the Cargo or Passenger some (I mean really 2000 staff officers and NCO who don't cut it for 1st class service) for either NAC40 or HNGR.  And maybe steal an idea off the Invader Jumpship and put a few LL or PPC for Anti-Trash details

The Naval Gauss is too complicated for tech level D and NAC35s allow for a tiny bit of Bracket Firing when compared to the NAC40 and it is a Battleship puny fighter weapons belong on fighters because Lyrans.

Also I didn't want to make it too good.

I wanted it to be overwhelmable if it is missing it's security blanket of Fighters or if it ends up facing proper Clan Warships.

Or even a pair of any of the above 800ish Kt designs.

I figure that once one of the six goes down in flames along with 3000 social officers that a Block II variant will be deployed.

well wait the Lyran Military might improve if we loose 3000 social officers and NCOs.    :P

Naval Gauss is too high tech but a Mass Driver isn't...   :o

Still think the MoC would love to get one for a circus ship.

And I wasn't talking at mass of LL or PPC for Anti-Aero, I was talking 2 or 4, just enough to clean up "trash" that was ejected with out firing NL at it and well burn thur it and into something important like the shuttle bring up supplies..

I'm guessing all that extra technology is needed to get the naval gauss out of the "awesome but impractical" territory Mass Drivers occupy.

Heh, I'll allow it if someone can sell it well enough.  :D

It's in Rule 4 territory, but there's a real world example of "no, we'll totally buy that old thing and turn it into a casino... honest!"...  ::)

But with Boondoggle you're allowed to bend the rules a little bit. Have to include in fluff why the ship as build can't do its role. BOOOOOOONDOGGLE!

I will see if I can try to Massage the deal between my Social Lryans and a nice group of people looking for a traveling cruise liner, and well with the social rooms already designed..

After talking to DOC_Agren I've thrown together this MoC varrient.

Official justification for the sale is that "it was garbage" and "unfit for Lyran Naval requirements" and "a danger to the continued existence of Arc Royal Aerospace" and "something to keep the FWL and the Capellans off balance" but the first and third reasons are the main ones.

The final design features almost 11,000 passengers and 1000 "marines" to entertain and handle the passengers.

The crew complement has been expanded to provide maintenance points but foolishly the number of lifeboats has not been increased.

The fighter bays have been mostly converted into Small Craft bays since I assume that rich people and private shuttles to the sex boat go hand in hand.

The ship is still a warship and it could be dangerous to anyone dumb enough to attack a passenger liner.

I'll just make it easier to read the official description:

Quote
Unknown to most of the Lyran Commonwealth's population is that there is a
seventh AEgir hull operating in the Prephary.

The original AEgir prototype was built over an exceptionally long period of
time. The initial keel for the massdriver was assembled in 2972, the KF core
was cast and recast eleven times between 2977 and 3011, and the complcated KF
boom circutry was never properly integrated with the KF drive.

After the inital prototype trials for the admiralty ArcRoyal Aerospace
transfered the most modern components to the second hull, the soon to be
christened AEgir, and sold the flawed prototype to investors from the
Magistracy of Canopus who were interested in using the hull as a "cargo"
trasport.

Currently the Symphony of the Stars tours Canopus space with its massivly
expanded crew areas providing a truly other worldly exprience for its guests.

[Note: flaws in KF drive construction limit this vessel to jumps of a maximum
of 10 LY, exceding that distance will damage various drive components. The
docking hardpoints are the obsolete pre-KFboom design, if the ship was to jump
whith attached dropships they would be left behind in the ships distortion
wake. The Heavy Mass Driver does function however the two counter rotating
gravdecks will have to be spun down first to avoid damaging the fragile
original designs.]

Doesn't that exceed the maximum mass of a Primitive JumpShip?

You know, for some reason I thought the 1,800,000 ton limit didn't apply to retrotech versions of primitive jumpships, but now that I look I can't find any such reference.

So unfortunately, it appears that 1,800,000 is the maximum limit, which also means no heavy mass drivers. My sadness is palpable.

I know that this is your design exercise but when I was figuring out if a Heavy Mass Driver was possible I went with the Tech Level D requirement and from what I understand of the tables modern warships are tech level D if you avoid advanced armor, Ngauss, Naval missiles, LFB and Naval C3. I just assumed we were using the Primitive Jump cores because they allowed more flexibility in design.

I did a redesign to get the ship under 1.8 million tons.

The difference in weight ended up being the difference in medium and heavy mass drivers and some cargo.

I went with 1.55 million just 50kt over the minimum required mass for the Medium Mass Driver.

Those things are such junk, but that's part of the Lyran design charm.

All of the weapons, aerospace fighters, small craft and docking collars remain.

As do the "observation areas" and oversized grav decks as I felt the massive and unnecessary passenger quarters is the kind of thing that the admirals would approve.

Justification for the sale of the stripped down prototype is that "it was garbage" and "unfit for Lyran Naval requirements" and "a danger to the continued existence of Arc Royal Aerospace" and "something to keep the FWL and the Capellans off balance" and I'll post that version if needed. But rip out the guns and add passengers is the gist of the conversion.

I would imagine that the 6 vessels in the class would remain the pride of the fleet even after the first one goes down to one of the 800kt ships posted in this thread.

But I imagine that a Block Ia variant that replaces the Socal Admiral areas with some anti fighter defenses and more Naval Lasers would happen in short order.

A Block II design would probably replace the NAC/35s with NAC/30s for better range if more vessels are built.

The ship is mostly a boondoggle because of the exceptionally long development period and the associated waste and the fact that the prototype ended up being total garbage.

I can also see a Light Mass Driver design that weighs in around 800kt being developed and smaller corvette/destroyer sized ships with nose mounted NACs defining the Lyran front facing firepower design theme.

==Overview:==

The Lyran Generals find the expansive guest facities to be exceptional as the
ship has a thousand first and twice as many second class quarters including a
gym and a pool.

In addition to the namesake of the class, there are five other AEgir
Battleships in the Lyran fleet.

Unknown to most of the Lyran Commonwealth's population is that there is a
seventh AEgir hull operating in the Prephary.

The original AEgir prototype was built over an exceptionally long period of
time. The initial keel for the mass driver was assembled in 2972, the KF core
was cast and recast eleven times between 2977 and 3011, and the complcated KF
boom circutry was never properly integrated with the KF drive.

The
docking hardpoints are the obsolete pre-KFboom design, if the ship was to jump
with attached dropships they would be left behind in the ships distortion
wake. The Mass Driver does function however the two counter rotating gravdecks
will have to be spun down first to avoid damaging the fragile original
designs.]

Hah a wonderful boondoggle :D Something tells me she would be like HMS Furious when she fired her 18-inch gun and her crews reported a 'rain' of sheered bolts falling down on them from where the stresses of the gun firing on so lightly built a hull ran rampant through the ship.

Also I can happily imagine this being the reaction at the Clans Grand Council when they find out about the WarShips etc.

11:59 - Grand Council of the Khans

Surely they would have collapsed into anarchy and all we need to do is return and restore the Star League and the people will thank us.
Aff!  We should enforce our rule, our way and our will upon the savages of the Inner Sphere.

00:00 - Still the Grand Council of the Khans.

THEY HAVE GOT WHAT!?
Ghost Bears: Cute and cuddly. Until you remember its a BLOODY BEAR!

If this is a boondoggle, you could have a heavy mass driver mounted externally and operated by space-suited infantry like it was a field gun. This would of course be a failed experiment, being a boondoggle lol.

so u fire the Massdriver and have to pray the bolts hold it straight

and I love the MoC model
