Battlearmor the Soviet Series
« on: 03 August 2024, 21:37:13 »
A trio of battlearmor though the third one an assault weight is iffy if it would actually be produced.

The first 2 battlearmor are mostly the same frame with a different loadout. Both are medium weight and have movement of 2/2/3 which should let them relocate adequately for city fighting. Both use mimetic armor to hamper detection.

Stalingrad- Medium weight battlearmor. The anti armor brother. Has in the left arm a single medium laser giving a squad 30 points of potential damage. Has a single M42B to see off light infantry attacks.

3 is a frighteningly low level of armour for a medium suit, and similarly 6 for a heavy. Yes, you can't get the medium lasers in without dropping armour, but they're frighteningly killable.

The sweet spot seems to be 5 points armour, plus 1 for the trooper, for lightly armoured mediums. That way, a medium laser won't kill the suit outright. 6+1 might be preferable, as the suit can then soak an IS medium laser. Against Clan weapons? Watch them melt.

So im just going to note these are never intended to be used in the open rather in buildings or camouflaged fieldworks. but mainly buildings. they could have more armor but sacrifice this partly for the laser partly for the 3 jump mp to relocate quickly.

These units are defensive not offensive their armor issues are noted and hoped to be negated by cover.

Old Soviet saying - "Infantry is the queen of battle, but Artillery is the king of war. And we know what the king does to the queen."

Same thing here. If you're planning to deploy massive fieldworks, manned with these, expect artillery. It's the "weapon without answer" to this solution.

It all comes down to balance. You can probably get similar damage output from an SRM-3 launcher - up to 6 points damage at 9 hex range - as with the medium laser, and have mobility, more armour, or fancy things like stealth armour, and have something which isn't helpful outside one specific circumstance.

In the 'Mech design paradigm, there's a failed one - "speed is armour." However, most people agree after trying it, you only have to connect once with the speedy unit to cripple it, on the whole. There's a reason armour is armour :)

Yeah, even just the 5 points of AOE damage in the outer ring of a Thumper's splash pattern will erase the medium suits.

Ah so I see one of the things that confused me the TRO showed 18 armor but that is the total squad value. Simple question what's the minimum armor you guys think a battlearmor should have.

Does this value change if it is only meant to be used from buildings in city fighting.

Like Worktroll said, 5 should be the absolute minimum, with 6 a better floor.

Also, for city/building fighting, ignore jump mp. Run of 3 is ideal.
