My wife's sentiments, exactly. Which means I won't be, either.
Too bad.  One more reason to wish I could have made it this year.

I am, although it's safe to say Melanie saw all she ever wanted to see of GenCon, and will not be returning.

Well, crap. I really enjoyed hanging out with her. I wish we'd had more time to do non-con stuff together...and that I hadn't locked her out of the hotel room and then fallen asleep. :-S

Aw, she liked you guys; I think, though, that with the wisdom of hindsight, GC was perhaps a bit of gilding the lily by that point. So if it's anyone's fault, it's mine, for letting my enthusiasm overwhelm my judgement. I know she was enthused about the possibility of visiting you guys in STL.

That's good, because I'm owed serious gelato at this point.

It occurred to me on my drive home that Neko is the Woody Allen humor element of Team Davion. I think I am a combination of Sam Kinison and Dennis Leary.

What?

Sad news, though understandable. I shall lament.

I don't really see Neko as Woody Allen, but he reminds me a great deal of Wes Anderson's self-parody here.

I thought every Wes Anderson film was ipso facto self-parody.

I don't know.  I tend to get my international news from the BBC and they're a bit of a biased source on that front for obvious reasons.  The AJC webpage has something on it, though.

Oh, ok

the social media and local news are quite interesting on this: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?msid=207192798388318292131.0004aa01af6748773e8f7&msa=0&ll=51.558503%2C-0.055275&spn=0.114195%2C0.298691

and

http://www.wimbledonguardian.co.uk/news/9184207.UPDATE__Riots_spread_to_Colliers_Wood_shopping_centres/ - this is very close to my house!

Plus this which is, if nothing else, quite fun to read http://www.facebook.com/pages/Supporting-the-Met-Police-against-the-London-rioters/152937041453243?sk=wall&filter=2

I've been following it, my smartphone pulls headlines on it pretty regularly.

I suppose The Smiths are getting pretty heavy airplay right now.

I thought every Wes Anderson film was ipso facto self-parody.

Some more than others. The Royal Tenenbaums always seemed to me to be too real to be parody.

Dan,

I had no idea it was that widespread.  When I visited the Paris in '08 the riots a year or so before were poo pooed as a one or two street affair.  Stay safe my friend.

Ben, I read WoR this weekend:  good work!  I would think more work like that will drag you to more events.

I've been thinking next year those of us going to GenCon should try to arrange a meet-up.  I missed a lot of people because I just didn't know when/where I could find people.  I was left just trying to read namebadges for the most part.

When did this rioting start? I'm normally really up on current events, but with GenCon depriving me with sleep, I'm just now getting all caught up. I need to read about this S&P bit as well.
Klep: Good idea, running into at the CGL booth  was nice, but something a little less ad-hoc would be nice.

I've kind of gotten that impression.  There's been a few things over at the BBC that suggest this the shooting was more in the nature of a spark than the underlying cause.

Ok, I've decided to have mercy on all the kibitzers here.  If you want to know what the heck we're talking about, put annie hall spider into a google box and watch the youtube clip that turns up first.

Though I am loathe to do so, I kill spiders frequently. Mostly because they're too stupid to avoid falling into the sink from which they cannot escape, but also because they're damn toxic. They stay out of reach and/or sight, and we're good. Get too close? D-E-D. That's right, deed.
