Title: What movies/tv are we watching part XXX, Back into the fray!
Post by: garhkal on 17 December 2023, 15:34:15
Since the other one has hit 50 pages, time to start a new thread..

Got some other oldies to get through..  The Original Donald Sutherland Invasion of the body snatchers, followed by his remake in the mid 90s, then the crow (always a good one to watch), and finally Scanners 2.

My favorite part of Hellraiser was the song Motorhead did for it.

I have to say, that's the best part of Hellraiser, and I think it was Hellraiser III; I did record that song off the radio.

Watching Babylon 5 with my partner. Never watched it before, but I've heard a lot of good things about it throughout my lifetime. The show's CGI graphics are dated, of course, but overall, I think it's aging pretty well. I'm having fun. lol

true
i think because they focused on actors like original doctor who and not on the sets to hide crappy acting or writing
admit it you really had to focus on sets and backgrounds when actors were on screen....unless script called for focusing on backgrounds as part of the story

Oppenheimer was interestingly good, and Killers of the Flower Moon was interestingly not as amazing as I had hoped. Here’s looking forward to Napoleon and Iron Claw (Zach Effron has come a long way since High School Musical and Jeremy Allen White has been a favorite since Shameless and The Bear in my house, and the Vonn Erich’s were one of the first tales of Texas lore I learned about upon moving here years ago, so I’m super excited about this movie).

Yes. Absolutely yes.

It’s directed by Christopher Nolan, and if you’re familiar with his other movies, it lives up to his signature style. I’m pry not doing it justice in this description, but I’ll say going into the movie, I knew the story, knew the end/result, but I was still on the edge of my seat all the way through waiting to see what would happen next.

ActionWife wanted to see Wonka before ActionKid leaves for Christmas. It was okay? I guess? Felt more like the original movie than the Burton/Depp version did, but I’m still not sure why anyone believes that Willy Wonka needs an origin story.

That was definitely the question I had about it: why did we need Wonka's origin?

I think I would have enjoyed it more if it had been its own, original thing. The movie was visually very fun to look at, it’s just that I was never able to square the fact that this had any meaningful relation to the original film.

Take away the Wonka name, the Oompa-Loompa, and Slugworth, though, and you’ve still got an okay family flick in time for Christmas. Paul Atreides makes magical chocolate with the help of the Downton Abbey butler and foils the evil plans of Mr Bean, Nardole, Olivia Coleman, and 50% of Key and Peele. That would be fine, IMO. There are already tons of movies in that vein that worked well enough and weren’t nearly as visually impressive.

But that’s just me. ActionWife and ActionMother-in-Law both enjoyed it, and that’s the important part.

I was left wanting quite a bit. I was excited for the story of the family and there is more left out of the movie than included which was very disappointing. It was like a movie about JFK not mentioning Bobby and ending as he gets into a limo in Dallas , and then posting a pre credit blurb that read “shortly after, he was assassinated”.

Currently, binging the 90’s animated X-Men series in prep for the upcoming sequel comic series and tv series that will be released on Disney+ soon.

It’s been over 20 years since I last watched most of these. I had almost forgotten how much I really liked the series back then.

I also almost missed the recent (new) Night Court Christmas special, but watched it on demand this afternoon.

Ah, the 90s X-Men cartoon.  Where Wolverine would regularly menacingly pop his claws before body checking an opponent because the censors wouldn't allow the good guys to be violent (still not as bad as the 90s Spider-Man cartoon where Spider-Man wasn't even allowed to punch enemies).

And don't get me wrong, I loved both shows, but even as a kid the censorship was pretty obvious.

Oh yeah. Even worse was the original GI Joe animated series, where all guns were lasers and no one could be killed.

Which was really bad in comparison to the comics that came out at the same time, where you had deaths all the time (at least of the Cobra troops, certain named characters of various factions, and some civilians, but never of any Joes until several dozen issues in when you lost a few dozen over the course of a few issues).

I was a very shocked child when I picked up an issue of the GI Joe comics after only ever seeing the cartoon and was immediately presented with Snake Eyes's master taking a missile to the face.

tbh all of those cartoons form 80 did not age gracefully only exception was hannah barbera but i think the style was delibertly done that way. still one of the better aged ones from that time was jayce and wheeled warriors and smurfs along with the littles also dungeons and dragons...tbh there were cartoons from that time from england france and russia that would give the animation that was done at a time run its money in particular a russian one wilk i zajoc aka wolf and rabbit two polish ones bolek i lolek and reksio english ones danger mouse and count duckula
there was french one i cant remember the name of...i think title translated to once upon a time another series was a czech production based on fables and stories about brigand rumcajs
ohhh while i remember there were two polish stop motion animated shorts for kids based on children books one was plastusiowy pamietnik aja plastus diary and the other one which seems to had a following all over europe and some parts of asia particulary in japan mis uszatek aka teddy floppy ear which btw also got ps2 game at some point lol

There were a number of 80s cartoons that held up fairly well.  The Real Ghostbusters, at least for the first few seasons before it got retooled into Slimer & The Real Ghostbusters.  Jemm and the Holograms was surprisingly good, especially for a show that was marketed to girls.

Until The Movie that still gets quoted in later material to this very day, anyway. I don’t know if the animated series changed very much post-Movie, characters aside, but that movie was a shock to the system at the time, or so I hear; technically it was before my time, though I’ve seen it many, many times nonetheless. A lot of named characters from the series up to that point were killed off, most of them quite unceremoniously – of these, I’d dare to say they were flatly demoted to redshirts, though I suppose Ironhide, despite literally being red, could be argued to have been wearing mauve. lol

I remember the first Autobot to die. Think his name was Prowl. Even a latecomer like myself, with relatively little context for these characters at the time, found Prowl’s death particularly horrifying.

tbh only good thing hoardmygld did good with their ntchering of macross and turning it into robotech was insisting to keep the death of roy fokker which changed US cartoons for ever from that point...but funny thing is the first death shown on that was not fokker but zentraedi when his battlepod got turned into seive by rick hunter....
after that cartoons slowly got more serious... as seen with death of optimus prime a year or so later...in theaters not on tv but it still happened and kept happening few times later on tv

i remeber some letters to editor back 1985/86 a lot of teachers praising that episode and showing kids that its ok to greive and feel sad also  a lot of psychologists doing the same. but the station that broadcasted that one in st louis mo got fined for it which had couple of churches yes churches go against the fine in mo. i dont remember what happened after that since my family moved to the armpit of usa aka nj

I don't remember that, but then, I probably didn't have enough context to recognize it back then. I'll probably notice it on a present-day rewatch, if I ever get around to it. lol

Also, I had an epiphany a few months back about this movie. I think a lot of us recognize that ever since returning to the role in most modern Transformers media, Peter Cullen doesn't portray Optimus Prime very much, if at all, the way he did in the original G1 series. It made some of his lines in Transformers: Devastation come off a bit awkward; I actually wondered if maybe he forgot how he used to do it, because the somewhat awkward lines I heard wouldn't have sounded so weird if it was actually his original portrayal of the character.

But you know what? Based on what I remember of the '86 movie – before, y'know, Optimus dies – I'm pretty sure his modern performance (not necessarily the characterization) of the character is more often than not based on that particular appearance of the character. I definitely don't think it's a coincidence that they keep having him quote that movie nearly every chance they get, especially the part before he and Megatron start fighting to the death. Optimus really didn't sound quite so upbeat in that original movie compared to the animated series that preceded it. And honestly, why should he? But now, that's become a bigger part of his character than it ever was in that show. lol

And for the first time ever, he's not going to be voicing Optimus in a Transformers movie- he's not going to be doing Transformers One.  I can understand recasting him, since he's in his 80s now, but I'm worried over the fact that his chosen replacement is Chris Hemsworth, who's A) barely done any voice acting, and B) primarily does comedic characters.  I don't think he's ever done a character who's as serious as Optimus Prime before (even Optimus in the first couple of seasons of G1 when he would crack jokes and share laughs with the other Autobots).

It’s not like Optimus doesn’t have his own relatively comedic portrayals. The Unicron Trilogy and Animated iterations of the character were plenty lighthearted most of the time they were onscreen; the latter could be absolutely silly on a good day, though admittedly the entire context of the character was quite different from other iterations.

That being said, I have a suspicion we’re not talking about something that’s going to take that sort of narrative tone.

"voice cast consisting of Chris Hemsworth as Orion Pax / Optimus Prime, Brian Tyree Henry as Megatron, Scarlett Johansson as Elita-One, Keegan-Michael Key as Bumblebee, Jon Hamm as Sentinel Prime, and Laurence Fishburne as Alpha Trion"

and

"The producer explained that Chris Hemsworth's depiction will grow into the leader depicted in the previous installments, stating that the transition from Hemsworth's voice to Cullen's will make sense within the story."

Makes sense - a young Optimus (pre-Prime) would have a younger voice, growing gruffer and deeper with age and responsibility/experience/etc.

the 2nd was Their Finest (from back in 2016) with Bill Nighy and Gemma Arteron..  Loved this one too..

Allegedly, there's a longer Snyder Cut that has all the plot that the Netflix release cut for time.

But as the Honest Trailer said, this was the script for a Star Wars movie that the people who made Rise of Skywalker passed on.

Watched Ad Astra;  so, the dialog is boring unless you like Brad Pitt or Donald Sutherland.   The astronomy is good; just, some minor problems like, OK, so, on the Moon, you can't erase a foot-print; it stays their for centuries; if you have people living on the Moon, their vehicles are going to leave tracks and eventually the entire surface will have tracks on it.

Everyone living in space has mental-issues.

If I were young, I'd really dig the use of deep-space vehicles and OTVs etc.

I hate that movie. I saw it when I was a kid and hated it, then I didn't watch it for like 35 years, but maintained my impression of hating it. Then, because it was in the cheap movie bin at Walmart, I decided to give it another chance. Kid me was right. I still hate that movie. I just do not understand its appeal.

THE NUKE would eliminate the evidence, but then how would they 'spin' the explosion, SINCE THERE are no nuke power plants, to my recollection ANYWHERE near the supposed town of Ogden marsh, near "ceder rapids.

The other part that always got me, was HOW SWIFTLY the govt seemed to mobilize the military to take the town out, YET we never get told HOW?

"Rebel Moon" and "The Creator."

Moon had a couple of interesting shots, folks silhouetted against the sky or posing like Greek statuary, and some slow motion scenes, followed by more slow motion scenes, with some slow motion scenes in between.

The Creator had a couple of interesting shots, giant megatanks attacking a town, scifi SE Asia, and some baffling plot choices followed by baffling plot choices and you get the idea.

Well, hilariously, my "smart" TV cannot connect to the actual TV service because we only buy it for three rooms, but it can access the wifi provided by the same company with no problems. So I can pretty much get anything I want on it, but I have yet to discover a way to put an ad blocker on it as it has no regular internet browser. It's just apps. And the Youtube one behaves rather questionably. Normally I'd just suffer the ads because they were short and infrequent. Ever since Youtube went ballistic about ad blockers, they ads are longer, more frequent, unskippable and more annoying.

I still haven't even bothered hooking my smart TV up to my wifi because I just run all my streaming through my PS5.

Only do YouTube on my computer so I can keep the adblocker going on it, though.

I have my 32 inch TV on my painting table, and I usually have it on when I work. It's easier that way. Mostly it's for movies, but sometimes I watch Youtube on it. Podcasts I just play off my desktop across the room to avoid ads, but Youtube movies are better on the TV.

Hazbin Hotel

This caught my eye last week, and I watched about half the first episode before I got busy. I’ve been meaning to get back to it. It reminded me of the Rob Zombie animated stuff from way back.

wrestling still around i though mcmann died?
well last time i actually seen wrestling match was in 1984 i think andre the giant enjoyed me as a kid because i knew nothing or cared for wrestling...how i knew him? well my friends dad used to go fishing and dragged both his son and me kicking and screaming on his boat and used to take him on his boat along to fish. he would pick me up one handed for fun and to tease me with throwing me overboard. now i was about 13 going on 14 and i was very tiny just about 3 ft 8 and about less than 40 pounds. and no folks in my family we grow and age slowly...i still had fun funniest reaction was when he found out how old i was lol

Yeah, pro wrestling is still around.  I actually just discovered today that one of my friends had made a go at pro wrestling until an opponent botched a throw that left her with permanent nerve damage.

It's interesting watching some of those old nature shows and seeing what still holds up.

And what doesn't.  Wild America had a whole lot of emphasis on hunting that you'd never see in a modern show.

I watched The Fugitive tonight. Still great. I am one year younger than Harrison Ford was in that movie, and I feel old. However, I am also three years older than Tommy Lee Jones was in that movie, and look at least ten years younger. Not that that's saying much, given that Tommy Lee Jones has looked 140 years old for the last 50 years.

FINALLY got around to watching Infinite and Prey yesterday.  (I've had them both on disc for quite a while now.  :embarrassed:)  I thought both were Pretty Good.  Also thought the dog in Prey needed better training.  Seemed pretty vocal for a dog that's supposed to be helping her hunt.     Cool that the DVD/Blu-Ray gives you the option to watch it entirely in Comanche!   :smilie_happy_thumbup:   No, I didn't.

God son wanted to see Bee Keepers / Jason Statham action flick.  Went in with rather low expectations. It was actually rather better that anticipated, although there were a few points of extra cringy dialogue.

Late matinee so didn't pay full price on tickets, it was entertaining, but a far cry from any tentpole grade opus.

After The Fugitive, I had to follow up with US Marshals. Strange choice for a sequel, but it works surprisingly well. I like how they took the tired "betrayed agent on the run" plot and told it through the eyes of the people hunting him. And Wesley Snipes is always fun to watch.

Roar probably would have gotten a more positive reception had CN not canceled their Thundercats reboot mid season.

And speaking of Thundercats, there's a new comic book series that just came out from Dynamite Comics.  Picked up the first issue today, thought it was decent- going to have to see what sort of direction they're actually planning to take things.

Been doing a watch of some of the youtubers, who do commentary/spoilers on upcoming marvel films, and it is set, for the four folks doing the roles for the up coming Fantastic Four film..  Two i've seen and liked, two i've not heard of...  Till now.

SO i am very optimistic about this marvel cinematic universe version.  BUT I am still irked they didn't keep the same actor for Reed Richards as they had in Dr strange 2..

BUT the bigger point i noted in one of the vids, is who they say the big bad is gonna be..  Galactus and Silver surfer..  HOPE they do justice to them.

I finally got around to watching Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One.

I never actually read the original Crisis on Infinite Earths comic, so I don't know how closely it follows that story, but from what I can tell it's a pretty faithful broad-strokes retelling.

It suffers from horrible pacing issues, which is not really surprising since it's part one of three, but once it gets to about the midpoint things pick up quite a bit.  Can't really give it a full review until after the other two parts get released.

I don't think that Forbidden Planet or The Fly were b-movies- way too high of production values for when they were made.  But I definitely recommend showing them the classics.

All older Quebecois know de Funes. His films were a staple of 80s or 90s summer or Christmas afternoon TV. They are now rare but may appear as french classic movie night.

lol in US i was only able to find fantomas...and that was in 90s on vhs u had been trying to find more until i got my paws on the collection
the only reason i remembered the title was due to a czech comedy series from 1980s arabela
next to impossible to find that one also
just as german hungarian production from same time of pan tau aka mr tau

just curious does any one know of 1976/77 production of swedish/german production of pippi longstocking aka pippi longstrung(?)?
i was able to get full collection about 5 years back both in swedish german and english

Dune Part 2 (2024) This was supposed to come out last year and I was miffed, but it was worth the added anticipation. The first part was mostly set up, and it leads to this, an all-out war for the planet Arrakis. Being a huge Dune fan I'm still not happy they left out lots of exposition in Part 1, but it makes more sense now in terms of overall narrative style.

The whole movie in two parts is really more about visuals and mood than dialogue. The changes they made are logical and dont detract from the book, and gives more insight on the religious aspects of Paul's rise to power. Jessica and Chani have much larger roles here than in the source novel, and the Harkonnens are somewhat more competent (in the book they were lethal at first due to their initial deceptions and the emperor's Sardaukar, but turned into idiots as the story wore on), though the exclusions of other, albeit minor characters were a slight annoyance.

All in all, I loved it, but its just shy of perfect. I only hope that a director's cut of Part 1 is issued some time in the future. Rating: 8.5/10

I'd see him pop up in movies throughout the 80s and 90s and point him out. "That's the guy didn't throw the whip back to Indy!" I didn't bother to learn his name until The Man who Knew too Little. Then I called him Boris the Butcher for a few years, until Spiderman 2.

MS Gundam Iron Bloodied Orphans. Watched season 1 for research purposes and... its pretty good. Lots of intrigue and factions similar to BT, which I like. I tried getting into the MS Gundam universe from the very beginning but the original show was too slow and the animation was dated so I gave up on it. Victory was too depressing and slow too, so ditto.

Of the movies, I watched Char's Counterattack, which felt disjointed with a confusing ending. Gundam Hathaway was pretty good, but it felt incomplete.

Will now delve into Iron Blooded Orphans season 2. Best series so far. Hope its as good as the first.

Also saw Dune 2 this weekend.   Really enjoyed it as well.

I attribute Walken's appearance in the role as payoff for his appearance in the song "Weapon of Choice".

I also wonder just how much pain Baron Harkonnen was in once he was separated from his machine too

Monsieur Spade (2024) Miniseries starring Clive Owen as an aged Sam Spade (the protagonist of the Maltese Falcon) in a quaint little town in provincial France. Set in the early 60s, he ends up in some shenanigans. Im a big fan of hard-boiled detective fiction and was hoping this turned out great, but was disappointed once more. Owen has a few wisecracks, but he isnt like the Sam Spade of the book, nor is he like Humphrey Bogart in the movie. The whole story is also a convoluted mess full of plot holes, and the fish out of water thingy just doesnt work. The deus ex machina ending was awful. Rating: 4/10

I found Summer Rental on DVD last year. Seems to me that there must have been a subplot involving his wife and John Laroquette, but it must have gotten cut at some point. Considering that they were both on Night Court at the time, it seems odd that both of them had so little screen time in this movie.

I'm not certain. There are definite moments set up early in the movie where it looked like the story was going to set up an affair between the wife and Laroquette's character, but then both characters and even John Candy's kids were essentially cut from the last half of the movie to focus more on Candy and Rip Torn building a boat. It's really obvious from a writer's standpoint that something got changed halfway through production.

Hmm, lots of ways that could have happened: budget, scheduling issues with the actors, reactions from focus groups or the producers about the plot of the film...  Makes for a jarring change, though.

Griselda miniseries. From the same showrunners of Narcos. Based on a true story it chronicles the career of Griselda Blanco, Miami's drug queen during the 1970s. Its got some good scenes, but it really sort of makes her too sympathetic. I've read about the real Griselda and she was a monster, and this miniseries isn't very accurate. Rating: 6/10

Cancer? Ouch. Lost a business partner to it. I hope she recovers quickly.

Masters of the Air (2024) I waited till it finished so I could binge it. I liked the earlier shows Band of Brothers and the Pacific, but I have mixed feelings about this one.  The story of the 100th Bomber Group and their campaigns over Germany in WW2 should have been a no contest winner, but I felt the multiple plotlines were disjointed from the beginning.

First there were a lot of characters, and all the different storylines didnt really mesh together. Many characters died or were captured so you couldnt really root for anyone because it was too spread out, and the time jumps were confusing too. All in all, I can recommend it, but with major caveats. It starts out good, but the middle episodes drag, right before the rip roaring final chapter. Rating 7/10

and i got kids hooked on knight rider....and finished mysterious cities of gold
and they absolutely loved forbidden planet

is it normal for kids to actually ask for vegatables? i introduced them to broccoflower steamed covered in stir fried breadcrumbs...
this is what they asked for for dinner when they get back from school giving mom a break and time to recover....

If the end of episode 2 is meant to imply that we're getting a Madelyne Pryor episode/arc, this will have been well worth the decades of waiting.

Unrelated to the X-Men, I (very) recently started watching The Expanse. It's been great for a season and a half, is it worth sticking with or does the quality suffer once the production moves from SyFy to Amazon (after season 3, I think?)? I know there's a thread about the show here already, but its been dormant for over a year and I'm not inclined to put my necromancer hat on.

Turns out, having Lex Luthor as a fan of the show means he's willing to buy it and throw money at it to keep it going and make it nice.  Well, guess it's better than spending all that dough on another plot to destroy Superman.

Paris Police 1900 Seasons 1-2 (2023) As the title says, this is a crime noir series set in turn of the century France. Its an ensemble cast, which reminded me of LA Confidential. Unlike the usual BBC and Netflix period dramas like Bidgerton or The Gilded Age, this one is extremely realistic. Theres plenty of racism, antisemitism and misogyny in this show and it doesnt pull any punches. You get to see the past in all its ugly glory. Awesome show, and they need to make more like this. Gruesome, spine tingling stuff. Rating 8.5/10

Fargo season 5 (2023) I thought this season was better than the previous ones, but thats not saying much. The story is actually a variation of an old action movie called The Long Kiss Goodnight, about an amnesiac assassin who ends up being a housewife before she gets discovered by her old crew. This version is very close to it, all the way down to both protagonists having a daughter. But this one is different because its played for quirky laughs, and of course in order for that to happen, everyone except the heroine has to be a total idiot. It was amusing for the first 4-5 episodes or so, but then it got stale towards the end. Rating: 6/10

Escape at Dannemora (2018) this just popped up on my streaming queue, so I didnt even know about this till now. A miniseries about that real life manhunt, with Benecio Del Toro (who is great playing a sociopathic killer). I was expecting a police procedural about the incident, but it turns out to be more like a prison drama, and its a very very slow burn. It delves into minute detail about the two prisoners and their relationship with a woman who worked there. I thought it covered way too much of the set up and the actual escape happens only in the final episode.

This could have been better if they had less episodes and tightened up the structure a bit. Rating: 6.5/10

Ferrari (2023) I was so looking forward to seeing this, but it was very disappointing. Adam Driver is OK as the title character, but the movie is one huge bore. Most of it is about a love triangle between him, his wife and his mistress. There just isnt a whole lot of interesting things going on, no drama thats compelling enough to make this watchable. Theres one race sequence (and accompanying tragedy) that nearly turned the movie around, but it was too little, too late, and ultimately went nowhere. If youre looking for a good racing movie, youre better off watching Ford V Ferrari or Rush, or even the old Steve McQueen movie Le Mans is way better. Forget about this one. Rating: 4.5/10

Ghostbusters-Frozen Empire

Large cast kind of drags it down, and not enough menace from the primary villian, or even much done from Garaka.

Lots of Easter eggs though and maybe if there is a third film, they'll be able to incorporate the animated Real Ghostbusters cast.

The Zone of Interest (2023) Its about Rudolf Hoss and his family-hes the commandant of Auschwitz. I'm normally interested in Holocaust movies, but this one felt pretentious and gimmicky since its main focus is on the family doing mundane stuff against the backdrop of all the killings, which are only hinted at via the background noises. I found it boring and it actually isn't historically accurate either. I would have preferred a straight up adaptation instead of this. Rating: 3/10

The Queen's Gambit (2020) This showed up in my Netflix queue unexpectedly. About a chess prodigy with a dark past in the 1960s. It started off very well, but the middle episodes dragged. It wasnt until the last episodes that finally got me interested again. Rating: 6.5/10

3 Body Problem (2024) Season 1. I got mixed feelings about this one. While it presents a new wrinkle in the alien invasion genre, I didn't care much for the characters, because they seemed more like archetypes than actual people. Also the way the story presents them as always being central to the plot involves way too many contrivances. Some ideas presented are definitely interesting and well worth a watch, if you can get through some of the more cliched parts. Rating: 6/10

Nope: it's a different kind of movie; it should be watched, at least once.  The acting was good, but, I kinda got bored with it at the beginning.

I believe there was also issues on the set with the relationship between the 2 actors, Rock had a contract stipulations that he couldn't lose a fight on screen.

It wasnt that bad it was long, and some parts were really boring. Kevin Costner is a great actor, and the movie didnt end on a happy note. Ive seen a lot of those "stranger to a strange people becoming members of that culture" for a long time. Dances with Wolves set the standard that Avatar and others copied and terrible.

Wish.

Apparently it's meant as a prequel of sorts with the ending referencing Cinderella, Snow White and the credits stinger referencing Pinocchio.

Kind of a mediocre movie over all, the music wasn't inspiring like so many others, and nothing overly memorable, outside of the stinger.

Pine was ok,  just think there was too much for him to try an achieve, while Asha just didn't quite fit as her character, sounded uncharacteristically older than what her character was supposed to be.

It's not really a prequel so much as it's just a reference to all of them for Disney's 100rth Anniversary or something.  I've heard a lot of speculation that Disney tried using AI to write the script.

Heh, this was one of the few times I was properly and thoroughly disappointed with the post-credits moment: "is this what we sat here for?". I've just never liked J.Cricket nor its song for some reason

Otherwise Wish was an ok flick to watch with the kids, they didn't seem to get into it as much as into some other recent-ish ones (such as Frozens, Sing, Encanto, Elemental) ::think

I hadn't realized it was a celebration of the 100 years of the animation studio until I went looking at a few videos after for reviews.  The storybeats then made sense why they were there, but yeah, still meh.

With all the garbage Disney has been pouring out, using AI would be an improvement.

The Deluge (1974) 5 hour Polish historical drama film. Its about a headstrong 17th century nobleman in the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth, who gets caught up in the conflicts with the Kingdom of Sweden. Vast, sweeping stuff, but some things are dated, and the romance is kinda awkward. Good intrigue and epic story, but some scenes drag. All in all, not bad for its time. Rating: 6/10

surprised you saw that one
i remember watching that one on polish tv channel one back in late 70s and on occasion you coul catch it in theaters
but still by far at least for me are 3 shows
czterej pancerni i pies aka 4 panzer crew and a dog
story about 4 crew members in polish part of russian army on the way to berlin and one of the crew members dog
stawka wiekrza niz zycie aka stakes higher than life....look up a movie which was rather good from 2000s
story about polish soldier recruited to be a spy by russian nkvd
btw these two shows were made in 60s and avoided censorship  being pro capitalist or socialist and were very popular at the time
przygody psa ciwila aka adventures of civil the dog serial made for kids about a police dog and his adventures as he grows up

it may be hard to get but i had seen some episodes on you tube a tv series about an engeneer his family with his issues of reaching middle age
it was made in 70s and it used a lot of places in warsaw that are iconic today such as trasy and bridges and central train station
40 latek aka being 40

krzyzacy aka crossmen is a bit of fictional drama  but worth watching not for the story but for authentic reproduction of armor and costumes

I just finished it yesterday. I agree, some of the characters seemed a bit flat, but I thoroughly enjoyed Benedict Wong's character and performance. Overall, I enjoyed it, but it feels like it had to skimp on a couple ideas. It makes me want to pick up the books to see if they give more room to the philosophical ideas hinted at in the series.

Yes, I agree that Wong's character is the best of the bunch (along with Sir Davos), but due to the other characters being so weakly defined other than their tropes, that he ended up being the glue by default rather than by design. IMO.

I havent read the books, so Im going strictly by what I saw.

I think it should be a rule the Benedict Wong should always play a character named Wong. Because Wong is Wong in every part of the multiverse. including our own world.

Ripley miniseries (2024) Since Im a big fan of this franchise (Ive got all the books and 3 movies on DVD) I had high hopes, but it was a major letdown. The whole thing could have been good, but it got sunk by very questionable creative decisions and casting.

To start, the guy who plays Tom Ripley is way way too old. In the book (and in the movie adaptations), Ripley is a young conman who becomes a serial killer. In this version he's a middle aged creep with no charm whatsoever, so its ridiculous to think he gets recruited by a rich tycoon to bring his wayward son back from Italy.

The other big mistake is to make it a B&W show. Why? All the colors, all the hues that would have made Italy great are gone. Everything is a dreary mess. What they should have done was make the NY scenes in B&W, and turn on the color the moment Tom got to Italy.

The third huge bomb is the pacing. This show is slow as molasses. Characters do nothing but walk from place to place and too many long scenes of landscapes and furniture. It was so padded that they could have made this a 3 part miniseries instead of stretching it to 8. It got really really boring after the first episode.

In the end, totally disappointed. Could have been a good show. If you want to see the book done right, its better to watch the movie adaptations: Purple Noon (Alain Delon totally nails it as Tom Ripley- the first is still the best one) or The Talented Mr. Ripley (Jude Law steals the show on that version) Rating 4/10

65; read a review about how the girl couldn't speak English, 65 MYA, actually, they're speaking Rigilian, but by an astonishing coincidence, their languages are exactly the same.

I'm not going to worry too much about the, scientific-accuracy of the movie.  We've only got a small-percentage of the dinosaur-species that ever lived, fossilized.

While that's technically true, the creatures in 65 for the most part looked nothing like actual dinosaurs and instead were just generic monsters.  It's especially disappointing given that early footage of the film showed them using much more accurate-looking dinosaurs.

65 is basically a disaster-movie, where everything that could go wrong, does; they even crashed into the freakin' asteroid and nudged it towards Earth.  Given the initial-premise, I'm not too concerned with realism and it falls right into, "Moonfall".   Adam Driver, could have pulled out a light-saber on a dinosaur and I wouldn't bat an eye over it.

I will say, I thought I saw grass (hadn't evolved yet) and if you saw the KT-asteroid-impact, you'd be too close and vaporized.

Anyways, Taxi-Driver('76) is next.

First trailer for Transformers: One has been released.

And I don't believe there has ever been a previous depiction of Transformers where the ability to transform wasn't innate.

the g1 cartoon showed transformers not being able to transform until autobot decepticon war that just evolved as war progressed
then decepticons gained power of flight
there was a story on that when optimus prime to be thought that decepticons were cool for being able to fly
it had been 40 years since i saw that episode it involved time travel on cybetron by autobots

That episode also contradicted other parts of the cartoon series, which established that the Transformers were built with the ability to transform when the Quintessons first made them.

The G1 cartoon had issues with keeping things consistent.

Quintessons?  That reminds me: back in the day, I had a comic that had each transformer featured, like a technical-manual, so I made them out for Battletech using LAM-rules.

Quintessons were the floating egg-shaped robots with five faces.  In the G1 cartoon continuity, they were the original creators of the Transformers as slave labor until the Transformers rebelled.

I believe that transforming was evolved during the war to help with spying and general hiding. Robots in disguise, after all.  I thought that was in the comics, too, but I could be misremembering where I read it.

No, that was Challenge of the Go-Bots were they developed the ability to transform as part of the war.  Though I haven't seen every episode of Transformers G1, they could have put it into an episode that I didn't see.  There were at least two mutually exclusive origins for both the Dinobots and Constructions in the cartoon, after all.  But like I said, the standard explanation was that they were built as a slave race by the Quintessons with the ability to transform as part of their roles: Autobots, built for domestic labor and construction, turned mostly into cars and trucks, while Decepticons, built primarily for combat, mostly turned into jets and other war machines.

In the comics, Transformers had "evolved from naturally occurring pullies and gears" and the ability to transform was innate from the get-go.

I asked the Transformers wiki (https://tfwiki.net/wiki/Transformer). Turns out, the multiverse struck again:

Quote
In some continuities this ability to transform is innate to all members of the species, in others it was a wartime innovation that was adopted by most, but not all, of the populace.

Come to think of it, "wartime innovation" might have been the explanation initially used in the G1 toyline.

I rarely if ever saw the cartoon, but collected MOST if not all the comics in the UK..  And that's how i remember it too..  PLUS if they were 'supposed to have been built" by the Quintessons, HOW THEN Does that explain Primus (their planet) or the creation matrix/??

The Quentesson origin was only in the cartoon.  The Matrix of Leadership was created for the animated movie (and didn't become the Creation Matrix until later), while Primus was something Simon Furman came up with in the UK comics (which was then brought over to the US comics).  Transformers has a very complicated history.  Pretty much every iteration reinvents the stuff.

My dude, I already mentioned it was used in Challenge of the Go-Bots.

Also from the wiki, linked in my post above:

Quote
Early stories depicted this ability as something that the Transformer race as a whole was not created with; it was either a wartime innovation designed to disguise themselves from their opponents, or an unexpected side effect as a result of their rebuilding at the hands of the Ark on Earth. However, it would not take long for this ability to be cemented as a natural extension of Cybertronian biology; later stories would, for the most part, establish that Transformers are born with a functioning alternate mode, or at least the ability to assume one.

I think the only thing in Transformers that's less consistent than the timeline is the scale between characters and altmodes.

The Transformers wiki has a page on that too:

(TFWiki is one of the best out there, up there with Sarna and Memory Alpha in terms of information but it has an irreverant sense of humour which elevates the content.)

That's one of my favorite pages on the wiki.  Along with the entry for B.O.T.  You know an episode was a doozy when one of the continuity errors listed for it was "this episode exists."

Zoids doesn't use scale the same way Transformers does, so that's pretty difficult.  A Zoid mecha that looks like a Styracosaurus, for example, isn't supposed to be the same size as an actual Styracosaurus the way that a Transformer is supposed to be the size of their actual alt mode, leading to absurdities like a space shuttle (Blast Off) being the same size as a jeep (Swindle).

I think it is, overall, better than the first miniseries back in 1980; the only thing I truly miss is John Rhys-Davies. His portrayal of Vasco Rodrigues was really good.

I really hope they release both as a paired dvd set, or at least release them as separate sets.

I’ve been really enjoying the new version, but it’s been decades since I last watched the 1980 version, and I hardly remember but bits and pieces of it.

The Stranger (2023) Aussie movie about an undercover cop trying to gather evidence against a possible child murderer. I was expecting a pulse pounding procedural, but I got instead was a slow as heck buddy movie. Theres some really long scenes where nothing happens. Everything is muted and shot in long shadows. Boring. Rating 4/10

I watched about 3 episodes of The Gentlemen before I gave up. If youve seen one Guy Ritchie show youve seen them all. The whole thing was moderately predictable in which somebody always screws up or there was some kind of reversal to their schemes so the episode could be prolonged. Even the plot was lifted off that Matthew McCaunaghey movie.

Now I've switched to Shogun, and its drawing me in. First episode is intriguing, very different from the Richard Chamberlain version.

I’m clearly going to have to track down the books to take care of the dangling plots, but it sounds like most fans of the series suggest starting from the first books

Well the first Shogun adaptation was designed to be an introduction to Japanese history since most of the audience back then didnt know much about it. This new version has Toranaga as the main character, whereas Blackthorn was the main POV in the original.

Also, this new Blackthorn is more opportunistic and cynical. Chamberlain played him as honest and noble, though somewhat naive.

I agree that Chamberlain's Monte Critso was the best adaptation so far, but I beg to differ on Tony Curtis, his hammy style was the worst part of an otherwise exceptional show.

Original vs Reissue never bothered me. The bulk of my collection is originals, but there are also a fair number of the early 00’s reissues. My Soundwave, Buzzsaw, Squalktalk, and Beastbox are all original to G1. Ravage, Rumble, Frenzy, and Laserbeak are the recent WalMart reissues. Currently on the fence about the new toon colors version.

I think it has to be Miller. It was a great character and Thomas Jane really sold the part. I also really enjoyed Bobbie’s arc.

You can just jump from the show to book 7, they worked pretty hard to get the changes and plotlines original to the show to a point where there's minimal disruption.  Like, you should read all the books because they're great but you don't have to.

He certainly MADE that roll, but for me, i'd have to say either Amos OR Drummer.  Bobbie  comes in a close 3rd for me.

Out of the Roci’s crew, Amos was definitely my favorite. I really enjoyed the additional layers he received as the show developed. Drummer was also high on my list. Her rise and fall and rise and fall and rise was incredibly satisfying to watch.

I think I’m going to start from the beginning just to make sure I have everything covered. I’m the world’s absolute slowest reader, though, so it’s going to take me a bit until I get back to where the show ends, lol.

Watching Hellboy, 2019; it's well composed, and made, but, the script is side-quest after flash-back etc.

Edit: Some of the fight-scenes of monsters reminds me of White Wolf's games.

Watched Franklin on Apple+

Pretty good, some of the characters blend together, its kind of hard to tell which one does what.
I give it a 8 out of 10.

Finished the fourth and final season of Doom Patrol.

Honestly, I’m grudgingly impressed with how they made it simultaneously uplifting and immensely depressing at the same time.

Now, I'm midway though, watching Midway (2020). It doesn't appear to be too historically-accurate, and I'm glad my step-grandfather won't see it; he'll have a few things to say about it!

Midway (2020) was "inspired by true events."

Surrogates; so I grabbed it because Bruce Willis looked old in it, so I thought it was a recent-release; it turns out it's from 2009 and, I vaguely remember watching it in 2010, the last time I had cable or a TV-set.

read the comic surrogates its much more deeper than the movie....its hard to find now
always thought that it was a warning about how net lets us insulate to a point of actually having fear of another human being or fear of embarrasment

I felt like it and Looper were both movies with interesting ideas that rather squandered them by going with fairly generic plots.

I liked it for the action, but plotwise, i found Gamers more of a warning about tech than surrogates..

Shogun miniseries (2024) I watched the Richard Chamberlain version a few years back, so the storyline was familiar. This new version has some differences, like moving away from Blackthorne as the main POV, and adding in more of the subtle palace intrigue that was very important to the story. All in all I did like it, though it had some moments that I felt dragged a little. Rating 8/10

ok call me boring...but since i sleep little and rarely repeat watch anything...i descided to re watch mini series from 1967
the prisoner...
i find i still enjoy one episode the most hammer into anvil
not for action but for psychological warfare and possibly the best episode written for the show not to mention the performances were top notch and ahead of their time and i still judge movies and shows by the bar that episode set

I watched that through a year or two ago. I really enjoyed the early episodes, but man, did it go way off the rails at the end. I maintain that what happened was that they finally succeeded in breaking Number Six, and the last couple episodes are just the lunatic ravings of his shattered mind.

my take on a village in general was a place to find people like number 6 as tool for evolution of society into something more stable with inherant ethics of caring for both individual and society which number 6 to have been showing through his stay. village i think was prototype and potential for more stable society or societies that were more in balance with out killing creativity it was also mentioned by different number 2s. it was also mention by number 2s that it is a place for people that know something or created something that they can be kept an eye on. but in reality i think these people were the idea makers and village was the test bed for those ideas and test bed for what they made the general was a good example of that. it scared the hell out me if such tech was released on general populace.

Yeah, running old movies in theaters started getting popular about a decade ago and it really seems to have taken off in recent years.

The Hourglass Sanitarium (1973) Old Polish movie from the early 1970s. It's a surreal fantasy about a man who visits his dying father in some kind of strange asylum where time is all wonky. The production values are stunning, and it kept me interested throughout the whole runtime, which is normally tough to do. The images on the screen are so weird and insane, along with the confusing plot comes off as like a fever dream. Gave me a lot of ideas to use in my writing too. Rating 8/10
