Fixing the SLDF/Hegemony Fleet

Aldan Ferrox and I have been chatting a lot about various designs and the like that we've seen serving the THN and SLDF. With them 'forgetting' that missiles and fighters are a thing and a lack of AMS and anti-fighter defences as well as some ships just being very poorly suited for what we see as their roles or intented purpose. This lead to many a discussion about how to change them and here's what we came up with. Aldan did all of these designs based on our nattering.

Vincent Mk 40.

The Vincent is more an OPV (Offshore Patrol Vessel) and light escort, yet for some reason she's packing an immense amount of cargo and was grossly undergunned for a ship of her size. She's outgunned by the smaller ships that she replaced. So this iteration has more NAC-10's for dropship popping and giving her a generally more respectable punch. Some naval lasers as well as some AR-10's for flexibility. Her fighter complement is doubled, and her protection is far greater, meaning she's far less vulnerable to DropShips. And, despite all these changes,she's still got over 70k tons of cargo, allowing you to use her as a priority transport if needed.

Essex II

In our minds the Essex is a general purpose destroyer. She's not overly fast, she's built to escort the fleet, stick with battleships, patrol systems and show the flag. Think a Spruance class Destroyer compared to the Lola III being the Arleigh Burke class in terms of roles. The Essex II block II is retrofitted to have more firepower as well as a truly formidable anti-fighter and DropShip punch as these smaller craft would be the biggest threat to convoys of DropShips or JumpShips. Not even a modern Clan fighter would want 100 LRMs per arc firing at them. Her big autocannons can still rip chunks out of hostile ships or flatten all but the most heavily protected DropShip.

Lola III

Inspired by the Caspar version, this Lola III is the 'fleet destroyer' the one that accompanies the cruisers and Battleships to war, striking at hostile WarShips and screening the big guns of the fleet. With her traditional NAC's replaced by Heavy Naval PPC's and NL-55's the Lola's a threat at long range and outguns more than a few Member State cruisers. A dozen fighters add to her flexibility as well as having double the fuel tanks of the original design for longer missions.

Congress Class Frigate

To us, the Congress is as her heart, a patrol ship, Convoy leader and Pirate hunter. Meant for long endurance missions often operating alone in the 'wilds'. Yet for so large a ship, she was grossly undergunned and had strange weapon placement and choices. Lots of ballistic weapons for a ship thats away from port for a long time. So she recived more energy weapons as well as a potent broadside with NAC-30's letting her flaten anything in short order, whilst having other weapons to engage at range until she can bring the AC's to bare. Fighters are doubled to 12, and she has a bigger fuel tank, as well as a detachment of Marines for shipboard security or boarding actions.

Sovetskii Soyuz

The Sov Soy has always been a ship I've held in very poor regard, looks aside. Whilst some Admirals touted her as a Battlecruiser, they were probably in the pay of the builders and designers. The Sov Soy's not really a cruiser, its definately NOT a battlecruiser. Its a fat frigate. But even then its not a very good one. Its slower than a sloth dipped in molasses and is undergunned for a ship its size. Yet you can loose the worlds largest liner in her cargo bay. This had to change, the Sov Soy, in my and Aldan's eyes is now a general purpose cruiser that is faster than the original design as well as better armed. The NAC batteries have been tripled, giving her a very hefty punch. The number of energy weapons also went up and she gets a full group of 24 fighters  to round out the ships design.

Avatar Class Cruiser

We both agreed that the Avatar is a very nice design that has some flaws, the worst being its quite frankly terrible cooling system. Its like they were inspired by the Spirit of the Panther 10K when designing this thing. Quietly whispering in the designers ears "Nah bro..that cooling systems fine..." So that got fixed! But otherwise very little changed save the addition of an anti-fighter battery and weapons and changes the the armour.

Luxor Class Heavy Cruiser.

The Luxor was hard to improve upon, she's already a very optimised ship and whilst slightly less protected than the Avatar, she's got a more potent long range punch and has a heavier point defence battery including a beefy AMS. We envisaged the Avatar being the mainline cruiser with the Sov Soy being built as a 'cheap' more mass produced ship. When the Avatar entered service, it pushed aside the Aegis who was then relegated to convoy duty and distant station flagship roles as she still outguns anything the Houses have. When the Luxor entered production, it would start doing the same to the Avatar, but of course, 'Uncle' Stefan went and shot an idiot in the face and plans changed.

Black Lion II

The NAC heavy Black Lion II is a very hard hitting and capable ship, but she's got some flaws which we worked to correct. We saw her complete lack of enery weapons as a flaw, as she was entirely reliant upon ballistic weapons and a foe could in theory manage to out turn her and keep out of range of most of her firepower. So replacing some of the ballistic weapons with energy mounts lets her fight at longer ranges whilst retaining the big wallop of the NACs. She also has 24 fighters and a decent fuel tank, fixing a major flaw with the design as she had a tiny fuel tank and thus short operational range.

Texas Class battleship

A fine design but one they forgot to put guns on the Texas looses a chunk of her near biblically huge cargo space gets teeth from it. All the naval lasers are upgraded to NL-55's and more firepower is added to cover her other arcs whilst making her more dangerous at close range. Pulse lasers and AMS are a deterrent against fighter strikes and a good protection against missiles but her main defence would be friendly fighters and DropShips when having to deal with fighter attacks. As well as escorst, and the fact that her massed lasers can be turned on small and agile targets.

McKenna Class Battleship

For all its touted abilities the McKenna is more a battlecruiser, she's got a huge punch, but light armour, and lacks any form of fighter defences for a huge amount of cargo. This had to change. The armour is now much thicker, all but tripled in some areas. The ships firepower is still the huge batteries if quad heavy Naval PPC's but there's more lasers, and more NAC-40's for dropship busting or clobbering anyone foolish enough to close the range. The McKenna now also boasts a very extensive anti-fighter battery making the space around her an unpleasant place to be for assault DropShips or fighters trying to engage.

In general, I think Naval Lasers should be installed in bays of 4 (at least), and NL/35s should be avoided (since they don't go to Extreme Range).  The HAF and SLDF invented AAA mode and bracket firing, and Naval Lasers should be able to take advantage of both.

Aside from that, I love the fact you've put in decent missile and AA defenses.  :thumbsup:

Town/Belfast Class Light Cruisers.

The light cruiser hasn't seen much service since the Dart's were retired or sold off to Members states but the Belfast class is built to operate as a long range patrol ship and destroyer flotilla leader. Armed with easy to maintain NAC-20's as its main punch the Belfast is an autocannon heavy design but also has lasers and missiles for additional flexibility and firepower. A large DropShip compliment allow her to undertake independent operations against poorly defended worlds or Pirate bases whilst her size and speed make her an ideal flagship for Frigate hunter groups.

Courageous Class Strike Cruiser

Hailing from House Davion and heavily inspired by their Defender class the Courageous class was put forwards when the tender for a fast cruiser was put out by the SLDF. Whilst this would eventually become the Kimagure Class, the Courageous class was constructed by House Davion with two scores of the ships entering SLDF service. Much like the older Defender, the Courageous is a fast but rather lightly built ship. Designed to use her speed and agility to out turn and out run an opponent, bringing them into range of their heavy autocannons before an opponent can react. Like the Kimagure, the Courageous is a short ranged ship, and both classes would spend most of their time in reserve, their short range, cramped quarters and expensive engines making them uneconomical to employ. In Wartime the two classes would operate as strike and raiding ships, hunting down DropShip convoys, vulnerable orbital facilities and lone warships. Their high speed and quick charging jump drives making them ideal raiders. One of the class survived and was last seen leaving the Inner Sphere in Operation EXODUS.

Nelson Class Battleship

Built for close quarters engagements and seen as a developmental ancestor of the Monsoon class, the Nelson was a brand new design at the onset of the Amaris Civil War. Only two had been completed the SLS Nelson and SLS Rodney. The Rodney was destroyed during operation Apotheosis, fighting to defend the Titan shipyards whilst the ships there either fled or were scuttled. The Nelson withdrew and became part of the 'Hidden Fleet' based out of Freedom Station. Rejoining General Kerensky's fleet during Operation Centurion, the Nelson would be destroyed by repeated nuclear missile strikes that broke her keel.

As a design the Nelson class was different from the McKenna in her designed role. The McKenna was built to cut ships apart at long range. The Nelson was designed to crush the life out of a target in a short range gunfight, relying on heavy armour and her massive autocannons to crush any target.

Solomon class Battle Carrier

Based on the Aegis and designed to be a 'force multiplier' for the THN, the Solomon class's ability to carry 72 fighters whilst having enough firepower to defend itself from hostile WarShips and fighters made it a formidable ship. Visually similar to the Aegis class save for the long hangar 'pods' along its flanks the Solomon lacks the raw firepower of the Aegis but can still destroy most corvettes and destroyers. The class was upgraded repeatedly throughout their lives until their final iteration which you see below.

Unlike the Aegis class, the Solomon was never offered to the Member states of the Star League and remained a THN and then SLDF exlcusive ship. Overshadowed by the huge Ark Royal Class carriers and largely replaced by the cheaper, lighter Samarkand  class carriers that entered service with the SLDF the surviving Solomon class Battlecarriers left the Inner Sphere with Operation EXODUS.

Terminator Class Assault Battleship

A curious pair of designs, the Terminator class would actually inspire the much later Nightlord Class in service with the Clans. Designed to be the last word in assault ships, the Terminator combined heavy firepower with a large troop and Mech capabilitiy. Capable of carrying 100 Mechs as well as 600 infantry, the Terminator was designed to act as a speartip assault ship, smashing through any opposition before deploying their Mech and infantry cargo in drop cocoons, drop pods and small craft.

The 'Terminator' class name was never official, it was just the Project Name, in SLDF service the ships were only ever referred to by their names.

A sub-variant was also completed, replacing her troop capacity with 120 fighters. Designed built and launched prior to the Amaris Civil War, one Assault Ship the SLS Tarawa and one Carrier the SLS Baden were completed. The Tarawa was destroyed during the attack on New Earth, the Baden was destroyed as part of Taskforce Leonidas during the opening stages of the Assault on the Sol System.

Whirlwind class attack destroyer

Instead of being rebuilt Davion class DD's the Whirlwind is its own thing and was designed to be an attack ship, charging hostile ships and engaging them quickly with their naval gauss riles and autocannons.

If a ship survives the frontal attack they still have to worry about the autocannons in the broadside and the Destroyer has naval PPC's on its aft quarters to cover its retreat. Because of this 'aggressive' role design, the Whirlwind was often held in active reserve within the Hegemony, and the tough little ships were often used as an OPFOR in exercises.

I would replace all the LRM20s with Gauss Rifles. They hit harder and the more shots per ammo ton will compensate for the 2.5tons (1.5t with ArtIV) extra weight including heat sinks. Gauss Rifles can't be AMS'd by target fighter either.  Also, LRM20+ArtIV ammo is ridiculously expensive. Or you can replace 5 LRM20s with 4 Gauss Rifles and have the same damage for 1 ton less counting heatsinks.

For my version of the Texas, I ended up added either 8 or 9 double turrets of heavy naval Gauss rifles (2 double turrets on stern, and one double turrets on the other arcs IIRC). Then I also had quad turrets of light naval Gauss rifles on each broadside, fore, aft and foreword quarters.

This increased its firepower to more battleship levels, gives it even more bracket potential with the light naval Gauss, and gives a reasonable explanation to why there were relatively few produced (complexity of the naval Gauss rifles).

For the Sovetskii Soyuz, I gave it the remaining 18 NL-45’s that the fluff text said it had in the 2750 TRO (thinking I went with 6 gun batteries on the quarters), and increase the medium NPPC bay sizes to at least four gun bays. Also added were quad turrets of light naval Gauss rifles on the bow, stern, broadsides and aft-quarters. Increase fuel and heat sinks to respectable levels, and you now have a real battlecruiser.

There's also a few errors in the weapon damage totals that's an artifact of what ever program is being used. LB10Xs do 6pts each with cluster ammo, not 10. LRM20s w ArtIV do 16 damage each, not 12.

Well thats a problem with MegaMekLab. Sometimes it also doesn't show how many Heat Sinks you have and it gives you false tonnages for the munitions in the Readout. But in MegaMek it all works properly.

Potemkin Class Troop Cruiser

The Potemkin is a very mission specific ship. Conquer other worlds. These ships are huge strategic assets and all but un-answerable for anyone outside the SLDF as they were built to carry an invasion force that could overwhelm any world outside of a House Capital alone. But they needed escorts and were slow, cumbersome ships. The main change here is speeding her up to a 3/5 standard so she can stick with the fleet speed of the time she was introduced. The armour's thicker as she's a hugely vital ship and needs better protection, and her firepower's gone up with more Naval lasers as well as a point defence battery. A hangar for 48 fighters also covers one major flaw in her design in that she carried no fighters normally and would be reliant entirely on her escorts or any carrier DropShips.

Fantastique Class Pursuit Destroyers

Initially designed as a 'Destroyer Leader' the Fantastique's grew into a design that would support the Kimagure class on their raiding and convoy hunting duties. To this end the designers at Blue Nose Clipper Ships produced the fastest destroyer in service anywhere in the Star League, only the Mako class Corvette was faster, but nowhere near as well armed. The Fantastique class was built around its engines which took up a great deal of space and this limited the ships endurance as cargo space was at a premium. Armed with a mixture of naval autocannons and PPCs backed up by Barracuda missiles for anti-DropShip and fighter work. Anti-fighter protection was also provided by a battery of ER large lasers as well as the 12 fighters that were carried onboard.

Horribly cramped and fitted with a 'washing machine' grav-deck the Fantastique's were totally unsuited towards patrol and convoy work and the classes high construction and operating costs ensured that only 48 would be constructed before the fall of the Star League.

Knox Class Destroyer Escort

The Knox Class DE was built as a direct result of the Reunification War and the experiences of that titanic conflict. The nacent SLDF suffered heavy losses to WarShips, DropShips and JumpShips from fighter strikes. The Taurian front saw massive losses as the Taurians made extensive use of fighters and extemporised assault craft to attack SLDF vessels.

Friendly fighters were the usual answer but these could be overwhelmed and during planetary assaults, they were usually too busy supporting ground forces and tended to be stretched thin.
Urgently seeking an answer to the swarms of fighters they were facing the SLDF commissioned the Titan Yards to produce a light, fast escort WarShip that could engage fighters and DropShips from outside their engagement range.

Within 24 months the design was completed. At the time of completion the only viable armament for engaging fighters at long range was missiles and so the ship would be built around these weapons, devoting a great deal of internal space to the arming, launching and guiding of missiles. More mass was given over to the engines which could push the 400,000 ton ship up to a bone bending 4G's of thrust. This made the design spartan, cramped and basic in the extreme, having to even forgo installing a grav-deck as there simply wasn't enough room to install one.

The result was one of the smallest ships of its type to enter SLDF service and also ton for ton one of the most heavily armed. Armed with multiple VLS cells for Barracuda missiles as well as White Shark launch tubes and 45cm Naval lasers the Knox class Destroyer Escort could engage fighters at long range as well as DropShips with its lasers. Close in defence was covered by a battery of pulse and standard lasers as well as a heavy AMS battery for self and friendly warship defence.

Although exceptionally uncomfortable ships to serve upon as well as being very short ranged, requiring constant resupply of their food and water, and able to empty their magazines in a startlingly short time needed yet more resupply efforts, the first Knox was rushed to the Taurian front just in time for the end of the War and saw action against the last Rebel holdouts.  Entering serial production the hull of the Knox would later be used to produce the laser heavy Dauntless class Destroyer Escort. They were developed when the Hegemony and SLDF developed the firing computers that allowed them to turn capital laser weapons on small craft.

Liberator Class Heavy Cruiser.

In the later years of the Star League the SLDF felt the Avatar class was starting to get a bit dated and whilst the Luxor class was due to enter service the class was delayed by weapon selection problems. The DNC wanted to arm the ship with naval gauss rifles but the SLDF was still cautious of these weapons due to their experiences with the Farragut class. The battleships had suffered significant structural stresses from repeated firings and this meant that the class had required greater dockyard time and were seen as 'Hangar Queens'. Not wanting to suffer the same flaws and repeated problems with a more numerous cruiser design it was instead decided to build a testbed based on a current WarShip.

The Avatar SLS Liberator was selected to be used as the test ship and she was withdrawn for an extensive refit and overhaul. The refit was also a test to see if the aging Avatar could be brought up to more modern standards, with so many of the ships in active service the SLDF was unwilling to simply retire the class or worse, hand them over to Member States. So the funding for a refit and upgrade was also used to test the installation of naval gauss rifles on a smaller scale ship.

The refit was extensive, and saw significant changes to the weapons and internal layout. Called a refit it was more akin to a complete reconstruction. But, the funding was available and the Admiralty wanted their tests. Tests the SLS Liberator passed with flying colours following her working up trials. As a test of the viability of naval gauss rifles on smaller ships as well as seeing if the Avatar could be upgraded the test was seen as a success. This cemented the weapons fit for the Luxor class and also saw the SLDF start pushing for more funding to upgrade the Avatar class into the now designated Liberator Class.

Unfortunately the Amaris Civil War curtailed these plans and only 36 Liberators had been refitted by the start of the Crisis and the War saw the Cruisers fighting alongside their Luxor sisters and they perished alongside them. But the plans for the refit were taken into EXODUS, and would be used more than a Century later by the Clans as inspiration for their own version of the Liberator class cruiser.

Aldan came up with the idea why the Clan one's worse. The Clans don't really produce their own naval weapons, and have to use what they have in their Caches. Hence the Clan Liberator having ALL the guns in weird layouts, it might also explain the veritable pick and mix weapons of the Nightlord. Of course these are non-canon thoughts but it does kinda make sense :)

Aegis Class Heavy Cruiser 2758 refit and EWR Refit

The Aegis class was called a Battlecruiser when they first entered service, but they were re-titled Heavy Cruisers a few weeks after the first ships entered service. These autocannon heavy cruisers were fearsome gunboats and served in the bloody battles of the Reunification War. Following the conflict and flush with funds the SLDF/THN opted to heavily refit the cruisers to modernise their armaments and update them, using the lessons learned from the Reunification War as a guideline.

Their massed batteries of NAC-10's were replaced and heavier weapons installed but the biggest change was to the engines which were completely replaced. An additional reactor (and 50 meters of extra hull space) allowed the newly upgraded ships to reach a maximum speed of 2.5g sustained thrust. The hull plating was heavily reinforced, allowing the cruisers to get into range of their new heavier cannons and take a significant amount of damage in the close quarter brawls the design excelled at.

Largely displaced by the Avatar and Sovetskii Soyuz class cruisers in the later years of their life the Aegis class soldiered on long after its contemporaries like the Dreadnought and Monsoon class ships had either been mothballed, retired, sold or scrapped. Whilst the House Lords never upgraded their ships save for the additiion of docking collars, the upgraded Aegis saw extensive use on distant stations and it was this that helped the class in the Amaris Civil War. Despite their great age the Aegis served well against the fearsome M5 Caspar Drones, but also suffered heavy casulties which lead to an experimental 'Emergency War Refit' for several ships of the class.

The Aegis EWR was an attempt to make the Aegis capable of engaging and destroying M5 Drones at long range and before the Drone's heavy firepower and high speed and agility became a factor. To this end the autocannons were replaced with naval gauss rifles, giving the design a fearsome punch at long range.
Unfortunately the refit was basically a failure. The stresses of firing the guns caused significant hull fatigue (and in the case of the SLS St Louis a total structural failure that crippled the ship.) The capacitors also drew huge amounts of power when charging to fire and in combat the ships had to run their reactors at 125% of normal load to stop them suffering brownouts and power shortages. This placed huge strain on the reactors and power systems and to quote one crewman "lead to a general sense that a catastrophy was just about to happen, it didn't help morale."
Three of the EWR ships survived the Amaris civil war and were used to carry bulk cargo in Operation EXODUS. It is now known that the three survivors were hulked after arriving in the Kerensky Cluster and would never see service again, although their gauss rifles would be stripped out for use on other ships, most notably the Nightlord class Battleships.

Volga Class Armed Transport

The initial group of 10 Volga class ships were rushed into service to stop the class from being behind schedule and in truth, they were not satisfactory. Their most glaring fault was their cooling systems which were barely adequate to keep the ship cool when preparing to use its KF drive. Staff from the SLDF Admiralty got involved on the orders of the Commanding General and the class was re-worked.

The flawed cooling system was significantly overhauled and improved upon, eliminating a major flaw. Armour was improved whilst the weapons were also updated. The side mounted heavy gauss rifles were first seen as a rather pointless accessory, but quickly proved themselves in the fire support role along with the ships nose mounted Heavy Naval PPC's.  Although nothing could be done about the ships lumbering speed, the DNC and Admiralty declared the design to be good and production resumed, the original batch of 10 ships returned to the yards for refits and overhauls to bring them up to the desired standards.

Despite these changes the Volga's suffered heavily during the Amaris Civil War, the transports were priority targets for the SDS Drones as well as RWN raiding parties. Against the dreaded M5 Drones the Volga was outmatched but against the manned ships of the Rimworlds Navy, they proved prickly and dangerous targets.

'Cameron II'/Lützow Class Battlecruiser

The story of the Cameron class Battlecruiser is well known as one of the SLDF's biggest boondoggles and is used to this day as an example of poor project management, design and role bloat and corruption. 

Decades after the furore of the Cameron class had died down, the SLDF sought additional funding for what was suppose to be another batch of Black Lion II class ships. Whilst the Admiralty said they were for Battlecruisers, it wasn't for the Black Lions but an entirely new class of WarShip built at the now SLDF owned Dassault Shimmon shipyards.

Whilst at least superficially similar to the earlier Cameron class ships, the new design, the Lützow class was an entirely different beast once you got past the looks. With the SLDF Admiralty and DNC having direct oversight and control, the design was finalised and then started in secrecy that was publically touted to be 'routine refits and maintenace' for ships at the yard.
Armed with a mixture of particle cannons, missiles and heavy autocannons the Lützow's armament was similar to the Cameron's but also more potent, with more cannons, more missiles, more ammunition and additional point defences.
The hull plating was heavily thickened and most importantly the engines were able to match the desined and desired performance, pushing the Lützow at double the thrust rating of the older Cameron's.

This 'shadow' battlecruiser could only remian hidden for so long and was presented to the Hegemony Goverment as a new ship built on time and on budget, with no additional funds other than those that had been put aside used. Whilst this was MOSTLY true, the ship was built in a short time and was JUST within the agreed budget. The political ruckus caused turmoil in the halls of the Hegemony's leadership and Government as well as the Admiralty. Several Officers were re-assigned or cashiered, but these were always to comfortable postings and stations.
The Lützow class was built in low numbers and their firepower made them useful flagships or force multipliers where a Battleship wasn't needed.

These fast and powerful ships were used in a vanguard role during the Amaris Civil War, jumping into a contested system ahead of the fleet with a handful of escorts, scouting Jump Points and roaving ahead of the fleet to look for ambushes. Although the class performed well in this role, it came at a high cost.

Only one would survive the Amaris Civil War, the SLS Singularity. The ship departed with Kerensky on EXODUS, barely surviving a jump to what would be called the Lum system at the end of EXODUS.
The derelict would be claimed by the nascent Clan Snow Raven and although her KF Core was wrecked beyond repair, the ship was made airtight and brought back to life. She was towed into orbit and would become the core of what would grow into the largest naval shipyards outside of the Titan Yards in the Sol System. At its core, the CSR Singularity was used as a command and control center for the sprawling Lum Naval Yards and the ship is still entombed in the facility to this day.

The original fluff from 2750 had WS having small batteries of point defense weapons but then in the stats we got next to nothing to show that.  (Congress & Lola/Vincent?)


I did a similar project & one of the first things I did is fill any remaining space in each arc with mech scale weapons on to 20.

It doesn't change the TC requirements & at the same time isn't going overboard with a bay of 50+ weapons or anything.



IIRC my Vincent went with 18 Fighters & 6 Shuttles to match squadron sizes properly.

I think I replaced the NAC10's with Twin-NAC20's & then added some NL45's in the Fore/Aft side bays to be able to bracket fire.


It still had a large cargo bay but was IIRC only 10-12% of the ship mass v/s 20%+

Quixote II/Horizon Guided missile Cruiser

Although the aged Quixote class Frigate was disliked by the Admiralty, there's little doubting the ships effectiveness as an escort ship, a role it performed superbly during the Reunification War. Its massed missile barrages were capable of swatting hostile fighters and mauling DropShips before they became a threat. But the ships aged quickly and because of their high ammunition consumption rates the ships were seen as 'failures' in their intended role of frigates.
Most of these vocal critics were what the Admiralty politely called 'armchair Admirals' but the Quixote's slow speed did mean that it was unable to keep up with the fleet as the standard fleet speeds increased over time.

In the late 2600's a design tender was put out for a new missile ship and partially funded by the money freed up by the slow decommissioning of the Quixote class into mothballs, the design that emerged was very much in a similar mold but featured new weapon systems as well as a massively enhanced engine, allowing the ship to reach double the thrust rating of the original Quixote.

The newly designated Horizon class also featured many of the weapons from the deactivated Quixote class ships, mainly their missile launchers and associated systems, all of which were modernized and brought up to the latest standards. These were linked into the highly advanced SA-1090 'Growler' fire control computer that could pick out targets as small as men in EVA suits and track them, as well as tracking thousands of targets and prioritising them for destruction in order of threat precidence.

Because of their basic similarities with the Quixote class, the media took to calling the Horizon class the Quixote II and many pundits were almost eagerly awaiting the classes failure. But tests and the first years of service silenced any critics and the Horizon was authorised for general production.
Like the Lützow the Horizon was used as a vanguard ship, teamed with ships like the Kimagure, Courageous  and Lola III classes to be a speartip for any attack on a defended system and they suffered accordingly.

Whilst the Horizon didn't reguarlly carry nuclear warheads, the fact that they could made them priority targets for M5 Drones and of the ships built. Ten survived to see Terra liberated. Of these ships, six were hulked and stripped for parts to keep less damaged ships operational and the suviving four departed with Operation EXODUS. There is no record of them in the Clans naval caches and it is belived they were all destroyed during the Pentagon Civil War.

I would replace all the LRM20s with Gauss Rifles. They hit harder and the more shots per ammo ton will compensate for the 2.5tons (1.5t with ArtIV) extra weight including heat sinks. Gauss Rifles can't be AMS'd by target fighter either.  Also, LRM20+ArtIV ammo is ridiculously expensive. Or you can replace 5 LRM20s with 4 Gauss Rifles and have the same damage for 1 ton less counting heatsinks.


Not sure I see the same math.


LRM20+A4 is going to be doing 16 Damage (avg) v/s 15 on a Gauss.

LRM20+A4 is going to be 11 Tons v/s 15 on a Gauss.


LRM20+A4 might be more expensive & less ammo efficient but its certainly not LESS firepower or tonnage at all.


Not that I don't like Gauss, I do, but I can see the appeal of LRM20A4.

Personally I like to mix them.

Bays of 3/5 gauss & bays of 3/6 LRM20A4 both have nice rounding efficiency & hit hard.

And with the billions spent on the ships themselves, the savings would be negligable really, probably not even a fraction of a percent of the costs of such monsters. Its like spending 4 billion on a huge housing complex then bickering over the cost of a 20 pence packet of Polo's. Plus, as a visual thing, macross missile spam = win.
