WarShip of the Week: Stefan Amaris
« on: 04 January 2014, 14:34:07 »
Stefan Amaris, Liberation of Terra II

The Stefan Amaris-class is a WarShip hidden away in the back of Liberation of Terra II. One of the few battleships seen outside the Star League it gives an insight into how a Periphery Realm would design such a ship.

The history of the Stefan Amaris is fairly standard. President Stefan Amaris wanted a vanity class of battleships and was able to use his connections to the Star League to get it. The President wanted the largest battleships in the Sphere. He got the longest so that wasn’t too bad. However at just over a million tons the Stefan Amaris is a long way from truly threatening size. Five battleships would be built. Three were upgraded with LF batteries in Hegemony yards before the Coup, and used during said coup. Two unfinished hulls were left in the Rim Worlds Republic and captured by the SLDF. These were used in to retake the Hegemony.

The Stefan Amaris-class feels like a big cruiser rather than a Hegemony battleship. Firepower mostly comes from broadside mounted Naval Autocannons. It is unclear whether the Rim Worlds Republic had bracketing technology, but the twin NAC mounts aren’t conducive to it. Anti-aircraft weapons are very good. The main strength is the Killer Whales mounted in the quarters. Conventional weapons are used and are reasonably useful for once. Especially the LRMs and Gauss Rifles.  The most important feature of the Stefan Amaris is its armour. Firepower is relatively weak so the heavy protection is needed. In fighting terms the Stefan Amaris is roughly equivalent to a Black Lion or Conqueror. Supporting features of the Stefan Amaris include 36 Aerospace fighters, 6 Small Craft, and 4 Docking Collars. There is 97,000 tons of cargo a giving useful operating radius.

Tactically the Stefan Amaris is a fairly standard House brawler. Unable to bracket it can’t fight at longer ranges, leaving a clear opening for Hegemony opponents. The battleship needs to close the range quickly to bring its NACs to bear. Even then the Stefan Amaris has to wear down its opponents rather than use its firepower. They are probably best deployed as blocking units for SLDF battle cruiser units. For the Rim Worlds Republic the LF batteries are problematic, given the dated nature of most of the RWR fleet. Few ships can keep up with the battleships. Otherwise charge and brawl seems to be the order of the day.

Defeating a Stefan Amaris provides a challenge. Its armour makes it a very dangerous opponent. That said most SLDF cruisers are capable of achieving battle winning critical hits at ranges the Stefan Amaris can’t reply effectively. Ultimately the SLDF is still recommended to use swarming tactics and outnumber the few RWR battleships.

The art for this warship makes me think of a cross between the old warship art of eons past (that made most warships look like beefier jumpships) and the newer art of post TRO 3057.

Do we have any idea how many of these things were built?

Five as I recall. Two were seized incomplete and pressed into SLDF service.

And both were reportedly destroyed during the liberation of Terra.

Given the name I think it was lucky they lasted that long, the other 5 that where used by their namesake where likely destroyed in the fighting or soon after

I certainly, did.  Thank you Jellico.  Too bad such nice ship was rare bird with an ugly name.  Then again, bad guys need something to smack the good guys with.  I didn't read anywhere i can recall where two SLDF captured Battleships SLS Chiefian and SLS Vengeance where they fought their own sisterships.   I like the fact that part of Kerensky's idea to use them was to rubbed it in against fat bastard he was using his toys against him.

And both were reportedly destroyed during the liberation of Terra.

At least they did better than the nameship of the class: RWS Stefan Amaris was destroyed by WarShip gunfire from the SLS Enterprise and her escorts.  A McKenna-class BB was exactly the class of ship the Stefan Amaris needed to avoid, and the battle showed why as she was destroyed quickly.  But then again, any Star League-era ship would die swiftly when hammered by 24 Heavy NPPCs.  #P

I absolutely loathe this design, purely on the basis of its name. If any survived the Fall of the Star League, most warship commanders would probably open fire on them without hesitation.

Even if the vessel in question somehow managed to be SLS Chieftain or SLS Vengeance?

Wrath of God, NPPC bombardment... The difference is really just semantics.

The McKenna. That and the poor ship decided to take on the Enterprise. What do you think is going to happen when you take on the Big E.

Considering the jobs those ships took on I'd be very surprised if that were the case.  I like how the SLDF said we don't really care who your names after functional WarShip?  You're with us

I would like to see this ships made into minis. They are nice ships, maybe not the battleship, but still great amounts of firepower.

Hence why I call it battlecruiser, it matches the parameters of a good battlecruiser and not a battleship no matter how much amaris wanted to call it a battleship

Sadly all were destroyed, mostly in SLDF control in the battle for Terra, one of them served in the sacrificial task force that was used to destroy a great many CASPAR drones in the assault on Terra itself.  I guess you could find the plans but they are woefully obsolete and I doubt there's much WarShip building facilities in the Blackout period.

only the ones we were told about  ;)  as there were 2 hulls under construction in the RWR , whoes to say that they did not build more? or that the userper ONLY had 2 when he launched his assault. Lastly, how many times have we read, or seen supposed "destroyed" warships come back to life? the Tharkad is a great example

heh okay you got me there :p I have a liking for the RWR Militaries designs, they seemed to show a good touch in everything they designed, the Phoenix, Rampage and Dragoon were all good machines for their times, and the latter two would not be shamed by the modern battlefield with a bit of tweaking to update them.  One does have to wonder what an expanded RWR could do given time and the tech.

Because the fluff directly says that the SLDF completed both for it's drive to terra. And Tharkad is not a good example- it was "presumed" destroyed, because nobody knew where it went after it's misjump.

Besides; do you seriously think the RWR could have built more of these things, considering battletech's... tenuous grasp of economics?

Yeah, this is a pretty well-documented design. Not much room for "hidden" hulls, although it may have been that some automated factories on Outpost worlds were still making Rim Worlds gear long after the Republic died. That would be a very good RPG scenario.

Perhaps, but thats what slave labor is for, economics dosent really matter if you do not have to pay most of your workforce and for materials. Also there were always those "hidden" factories and shipyards. There is far to much wiggle room here for us to simply say "there were only ever 4 and NEVER any more". The book expressly states that there was 2 hulls "nearly" compleate. witch to me says there were other hulls in various states of construction so whose to say those were not completed and secreted away someware? In the BT univers you can never just wright something off, except when people die, and even then not every time.
