Aurigan New Mech and Licence Production Tender

High Lady Kamea Arano has presented a new procurement budget to the Council which includes the expansion of Raju Montgomery Memorial Refit Yards into a full production facility, able to produce Battlemechs for domestic use, refit existing hardware, and produce some for export sales to the Mercenary market and allied governments. Production will be split between Light, Medium, Heavy and Assault designs. However, in light of the Clan invasion, she is hoping to licence designs from outside the Coalition, and thereby secure Tooling for modern equipment that would otherwise be well outside the budget of the Coalition Army. Equipment like ER large lasers, Double heat sinks, and LB-X autocannons. However, in the interests of parsimony, the parts required should not force the facility to grow too large. Three former LosTech components for all four designs would really be ideal, but the budget may be stretched to 4 without undue issues-5 or more, will require either major investment partnerships or a dedicated import contract for the next 99 years. To simplify matters, all four designs will be accepted en bloc, with a single contract covering all licencing details.

Be that as it may, Aurigian pride demands that the new factory place at least one design into production which is unique to the Aurigian Coalition, and which can be an icon for the entire nation. This design, with the placeholder name of Project Cormorant, is fully open-any of the requirements for any weight class can be offered as a potential Cormorant.

Raju Montgomery Memorial Mechworks Tender:
All designs (except for one, chosen by design team) Must be modifications of existing designs.  Designs chosen should be of a single corporate or national character.  Found-tech should be employed only when absolutely necessary, and consistently across all designs.

Light design: Annual Production, 150M C-bills
General purpose scout and harasser Mech.
Jump jets not required, but will be strongly considered
Should trade aggressively with Bugmechs, be more cost-effective than same.
Anti-infantry and anti-vehicle weapons a plus, but not required.

Medium Design: Annual Production: 300M C-bills
Trooper or Skirmisher design
Must mount at least one support/Anti-infantry weapon.
Skirmisher must carry at least 50% Long Ranged weapons by firepower (LRMs, ER Large Lasers, PPC, Etc...).
Trooper should have at least a 20 point damage potential range band.
5/8 speed preferred slightly, Jump jets also preferred. 4/6 or 6/9 speed units will be subject to additional review.​

Heavy Design: Annual Production: 300M C-bills
Heavy Trooper or Fire Support designs
4/6 speed or better required, no 'Pocket assaults.'
Fire Support designs should be capable of sustained fire without resupply or dangerous overheating.
Heavy Trooper should maintain at least 33% of weapons with loss of one side torso and attached arm.
Good armor always appreciated.​

Assault Design: Annual Production: 250M C-bills
40 point damage potential range band
At least one Long Range weapon. Single LRM5 will not cut it for this requirement.
Heavy armor and additional protection measures appreciated.
CASE not required for ammunition, but refit space requested.​

The AWS-9AU is designed to augment the already incredible firepower of the famous AWS-8Q Awesome. It uses the same chassis and engine as the -8Q, so it can be produced as a field refit kit. It swaps the heat sinks for dual-strength freezers and reduces them to 16, allowing it to run and fire the primary weapons suite without incurring additional heat load. The remaining tonnage is converted to a devastating close-in weapons system, adding a pair of SRM-6 launchers and 4 medium lasers. The ammunition bays are protected with CASE for maximum survivability.

Total cost is approximately 7.4M C-bills, allowing nearly a full battalion to be produced within the stated budget per year.

The CN-9AU honors the late Hero of the Aurigan Reach with an updated version of his iconic battlemech. The CN-9AU uses two new technologies and some old ones to make a capable trooper mech without sacrificing the abilities of the original. The inclusion of Ferro-Fibrous armor and a LB-10X autocannon gives the CN-9AU enough mass to mount a quartet of jump jets, giving what was once a slow medium-weight battlemech the mobility to traverse the modern battlefield. It retains the original frame, engine, and heat sinks and upgrade kits are easily applied in the field. At just under 4 million C-bills, well over two battalions worth can be produced every year within the stated budget parameters.

The JVN-10AU is a complete re-imagining of the Javelin platform. Rather than relying on close assault, this version of the Javelin is armed with a pair of long ranged missile launchers to make it a capable scout and skirmisher. The -10AU upgrade to the standard Javelin is a field-capable upgrade, retaining the engine, frame, and heat sinks of the original. It upgrades the existing armor package with Ferro-fibrous armor, giving it superior protection to the original. For close-in combat the -10AU Javelin sports  a pair of torso-mounted medium lasers, giving it respectable punch against anything in its weight class. Lastly, Target Acquisition Gear gives it a spotting capability unparalleled in the Periphery.

At less than 2.5 million C-bills, nearly two full battalions can be manufactured within the budgetary scope.

Carrion industries would like to present 4 designs made especially for High Lady Arano each based on a design that served a major role in the liberation of the Aurigian people.

We have taken Lostech technology acquired in part from Lady Arano's own recovery of technology as well as cutting edge developments during the clan invasion to bring you the wonders of Double Heat Sinks, Endosteel structures and CASE to protect your valuable mechwarriors but apart from that we have used the reliable, proven technologies that Lady Arano used to liberate her people.  I have designated each of these designs with an A2 designation

First, the fast attack cavalry, the Jenner FA2, mounting a staggering 6 medium lasers and being able to run and fire them all without a drop of heat this Jenner has also been substantially up-armoured making it a tough fast responder with plenty of firepower

The Trooper mech will be filled by the sturdy crab, upgraded with double heatsinks and endosteel the large lasers are replaced by PPCs and a flamer installed in the head to deal with infantry.  Sadly we were unable to accommodate the desire for jump jets without compromising the first rate armoured shell of this battle mollusc

The Heavy spot is a modification to the venerable Catapult, more ammunition and the addition of a Large Laser allows the classic design to outperform the old CPLT-C1 in almost every way and offers the same 30 tubes of long range missiles for longer and better protected.  The addition of CASE protects the mechwarrior and as such all the missiles have been moved to one side while the energy weapons occupy the other.  For easier production we would be happy to replace the Large Laser and 2 of the Medium Lasers with a PPC as this is the only Large Laser on any of the A2 mech series but it would sacrifice some of the Catapults short range protection

What History of the glorious liberation of the Aurigian Reach would be complete without the Highlander - so many times crippled in battle that it is almost unrecognisable from the original SLDF design, the Gauss rifle replaced with 2 PPCs and as many LRMs as the Catapult makes this a terrifying mech at long range, the 8! medium lasers will reduce anything up close to slag in a heartbeat but this beast runs hot and can easily destroy itself with a single alpha strike so your assault mechs pilots should be well trained.

The DRG-1GAU Dragon is a re-thinking of the 3024 Draconis Combine refit of the standard Dragon. Rather than acting as a skirmisher, the -1GAU Dragon is a mobile firepower platform designed to close with the  enemy. It retains the original's particle cannon and lasers, but replaces the missile system with a pair of 6-tube SRM racks for devastating close-in firepower. The -1GAU is just a mobile a platform as the original, but boasts improved heat management and armor protection. CASE-protected ammunition means that even an ammunition explosion won't slow it down. The use of double-strength freezers and ferro-fibrous armor makes this advanced piece of technology formidable in short or long range engagements.

At under 5.5M C-bills, the DRG-1GAU Dragon can be produced at about a battalion and a half per year within the existing budgetary scope.

I'm afraid I'm at 5 new technologies including CASE. In general I tried to keep things mostly to stuff that could be field-refit. If I were to do it over again I think I might lose the Centurion in favor of something else, but I feel like after Mad Dog's sacrifice that would become something of a totem design for the Aurigans.

I guess if I'm forced to lose a technology from mine it would be the TAG in the Javelin. Semi-guided LRMs are really not likely to happen in the Reach, and it would let me up the armor by a ton.

Carrion industries would like to present 4 designs made especially for High Lady Arano each based on a design that served a major role in the liberation of the Aurigian people.

We have taken Lostech technology acquired in part from Lady Arano's own recovery of technology as well as cutting edge developments during the clan invasion to bring you the wonders of Double Heat Sinks, Endosteel structures and CASE to protect your valuable mechwarriors but apart from that we have used the reliable, proven technologies that Lady Arano used to liberate her people.  I have designated each of these designs with an A2 designation

First, the fast attack cavalry, the Jenner FA2, mounting a staggering 6 medium lasers and being able to run and fire them all without a drop of heat this Jenner has also been substantially up-armoured making it a tough fast responder with plenty of firepower

The Trooper mech will be filled by the sturdy crab, upgraded with double heatsinks and endosteel the large lasers are replaced by PPCs and a flamer installed in the head to deal with infantry.  Sadly we were unable to accommodate the desire for jump jets without compromising the first rate armoured shell of this battle mollusc

The Heavy spot is a modification to the venerable Catapult, more ammunition and the addition of a Large Laser allows the classic design to outperform the old CPLT-C1 in almost every way and offers the same 30 tubes of long range missiles for longer and better protected.  The addition of CASE protects the mechwarrior and as such all the missiles have been moved to one side while the energy weapons occupy the other.  For easier production we would be happy to replace the Large Laser and 2 of the Medium Lasers with a PPC as this is the only Large Laser on any of the A2 mech series but it would sacrifice some of the Catapults short range protection

What History of the glorious liberation of the Aurigian Reach would be complete without the Highlander - so many times crippled in battle that it is almost unrecognisable from the original SLDF design, the Gauss rifle replaced with 2 PPCs and as many LRMs as the Catapult makes this a terrifying mech at long range, the 8! medium lasers will reduce anything up close to slag in a heartbeat but this beast runs hot and can easily destroy itself with a single alpha strike so your assault mechs pilots should be well trained.


These aren't bad-but since there's no new design to bear the standard of the Reach, you're technically disqualified.  Actually, you're both disqualified.  Go back, and replace a design with something new, both of you!

Overview:
The Cormorant is a proposed design for the Aurigan Coalition. It is intended to
be their first domestically produced Battlemech. Aurigan Industrial Products,
with the assistance of Vandenburg Mechanized Industries, hopes to introduce the
design by 3050.


Capabilities:
Named for a Terran bird of prey, the Cormorant is designed as a highly mobile
scout and light skirmisher. It has a high top speed, jump capability, and a single
long-ranged laser cannon.


The chassis is based on the VMI Light Standard, itself a licensed copy of the
Coventry chassis used on the COM-2D Commando. VMI was able to provide the
machinery and tooling for this chassis to the AIP plant on Mechdur following
VMI's shift of their Commando production line to other products.


Armor is also purchased from the Taurian Concordat. AIP felt that additional
money should be spent for a better quality armor, so 3 tons of Durralex Ferro
Fibrous was fitted to the design. While the total protection is slightly less
than other mechs in its tonnage class, it is considered sufficient for the ranges that the
Cormorant is intended to operate at.


AIP saw fit to include a GM 175 rated fusion engine to power their new design.
This gives it a top speed of well over 100 Kph, which puts it in the class of
some of the fastest mechs on the battlefield. Combined with a 150-meter jump
range, the Cormorant is intended to swoop down onto its prey quickly like its
namesake.


What sets the Cormorant apart is its firepower. A massive Diverse Optics type
30, one of the largest energy weapons available, is mounted in the right torso.
This gives the Cormorant the punch to knock down anything in her weight
class, while giving it the range to stay away from anything larger.


Variants:
AIP has proposed a single variant of the Cormorant. This turns it from a
skirmisher into a indirect fire capable light support platform. The proposed variant replaces
the Type 30 with a pair of Magna Longbow-V 5-tube long range missile launchers.



This gives even greater range while not sacrificing firepower, though this
variant would be very dependent on ammunition resupply. AIP suggest that no
more than 1 in every 3 Cormorants be configured as an indirect fire platform.

Built with Capellan assistance and using the same engine used in the first generation Raven, this new Quad features an ER large laser and a pair of medium pulse lasers. For anti-infantry work, a pair of machine guns have also been added. A total of 54 Cormorants can be built with the miniscule budget allotted.

A modified Catapult that swaps the 15 ingle heatsink for 10 doubles. With the weight saved two more tons of LRM 15 ammo have been added. Secondary weapons see the four medium lasers stripped away and replaced with an ER large laser and a pair of small lasers. A total of 50 of these Catapults can be built under the budget.

IF all four Capellan inspired designs are chosen a total of 221 Mech can be built which is enough to outfit 18 full companies or two full regiments plus a handful of spares. The engineers at Gilmore Technica decided to provide a variation on a tried and true design for the medium-class design; the Phoenix Hawk.  The 3AU mounts an all energy weapon loadout to reduce its logistical footprint, with flamers providing the requested anti-infantry weapon compliment.  The 3AU only utilizes two items of lostech, though  neither the double heat sinks nor endo-steel internal structure are the most costly components.  The replacement of the standard heat exchangers for double strength ones gives the 3AU better heat management.  While intended as a trooper design, the PPC provides the pilot with a harassment option.  At a little over 3 million C-bills per unit, nearly a hundred 3AUs can leave the assembly line in a year.

In the heavy 'mech slot, we offer one of the most iconic designs in production, the Warhammer. The 7T variant trades two SRM tubes for another pair of Medium Lasers, exchanges the machine guns for small pulse lasers, and changes its 18 single heat sinks for fifteen Freezers, enabling it to comfortably fire its twin Donal PPCs at enemies at range or alternatively fire all of its many close-range weapons at enemies close by, all without worrying about heat management. For the light design, Gilmore Technica revised the venerable Hussar.  This design features more armor than many Succession War downgrades, largely thanks to the use of recovered ferro-fibrous manufacturing.  We anticipate that the Aurigan Coalition will eventually produce local versions of the extended range lasers the League-era design used; with that in mind, the engineers made sure the power couplings were extra robust and easy to refit with weaponry.
(Somebody scribbled in the specs: "Don't these things practically require extra-light engines?!")

(I was going to throw the totem mech in here, but I'm entirely unhappy with the design and need sleep.)

King Crab KGC-000AU
"... cripple or destroy another 'mech with a single salvo" were the words used to specify the King Crab's battlefield role, bringing us to our assault class design for the Aurigian Coalition.  While it does not quite reach the same damage potential as the original design, it is able to use emerging specialty ammunition for its twenty-tube missile launchers and autocannon.  This variant is meant to be supported with lighter classes of 'mechs or hunter-killers that can take advantage of enemies weakened by the -000AU's long-range barrages.  For close-in defense the 'mech mounts a heavier autocannon and a large laser.  CASE protects both side torsos in the event of a catastrophic internal explosion (though our engineers note that CASE can be replaced with an additional ammunition bin if desired).  MechWarriors will definitely appreciate the seventeen tons of protection from ferro-fibrous armor.

(The technical department of the Aurigian Coalition warns this would be a nightmare to maintain due to its cramped spaces.)

Started small with the Cormorant, making it a light 'mech that's a complete new design and totally not a lightweight Wolfhound.  Added an HBK, RFL, and STK variant for the bigger machines, and stuck with three advanced technologies - TAG (for semi-guided LRMs), DHS, and CASE.

Flamer for antipersonnel, smoke screens, signal fires, or trolling mechs that run hot.  Decent speed, okayish armor, good guns and outranges most things smaller than it while matching speed.  Use the flamer to set up smoke to break off from anything bigger or meaner; unfortunately I didn't have jump jet tonnage but neither does the Wolfhound which is the obvious comparison.  I like to think the Cormorant was 'okay, the WLF is nice, now let's do it a little better and lighter' in-universe.

Oh look it's a Stalker.  DHS tonnage pretty much went into bigger LRMs and more ammo; it can bracket the LLs and LRMs or the short-range stuff all day.  I wanted to go with an XLFE for it, but that was too much special tech (and expensive at that) just so I could bump the SRM racks up as well as the armor; having a 50% boost in missile power was a good trade IMO for the XLFE.  At least it can sit back and blast away for longer timespans than the original 3F.

Amazing what you can get with Large Lasers and LRM-15s all over the place; no big PPCs or anything but lots of secondary weapons.  I'm...not displeased.  Hell, all the guns involved are LLs, MLs, Flamers, TAG, AC20, LRM15, and SRM6.  That's a very small logistics and maintenance chain in the end.

(At a glance, it appears Gilmore Technica's engineers are not the most imaginative bunch.  It seems their totem 'Mech submission is just a Centurion that's gained 25 tons.  At least they didn't try to pass off a Marauder variant as MAD-9 or something stupid like that.  But it does somehow meet the requirements laid out for a heavy trooper in one mixed bag.  The sales pitch talks about how the arm mounted weaponry gives it better firing arc options.  Cursory research into this firm reveals they're mostly known for refurbishing and refitting 'Mechs, not designing from whole cloth.)

Oops, missed the original design requirement.  No worries.

For the crowning glory of the Aurigian military what could be more fitting then a battlemech tribute to the Sword Of Restoration herself - the Arano.  Weighing in at 80T the Arano is the centrepiece of the Reach's new military, however it won't hold back a mixed force, able to keep up with in both ground speed and jump capacity with the 15T lighter Catapult.  The massive 6 ton Falchion it grips in its right hand is overshadowed only by the massive axe of the Berzerker and will forever be a symbol to the people of the Reach.  On top of that an impressive energy weapon array, overshadowing even the Aurigian's own Crab A2, will leave enemies near and far cowering wherever the Arano treads. 

The Carrion proposal for the Aruigian reach's new line of battlemechs covers 4 chassis, 4 different and versatile designs, 4 weapon systems (PPC, ML, Flamer and LRM-15 assuming the PPC armed version of the Catapult) and a good level of standardisation with double heat sinks in every engine and endosteel composing every structure.

Posting to tell everyone that, barring any new entries or request for submission, I'll start grading up these offerings tommorow-we've got quite a lot and some very different ideas about what the Reach needs.

Not a lot of variety in names though.  I'd suggest the following possibilities: A'u, Kaku, Mahimahi, Ona, Opah, Uhu, all fishes.  'io, 'Alalā, ʻelepaio, and ʻōʻō are all birds.  And yes, the lowercase letters and apostrophes are part of the names, Polynesian languages don't have a lot of phonemes.  Also a lot of those birds are extinct, or threatened with extinction.  For heavier mechs, names like Rangatira, Kamehameha, Moai, Kupe, Kaikilani, and other names symbolizing chiefly power and nobility may be employed, names that connotate human power.  Assault mechs alone can lay claim to names like Pele, Tūmatauenga, Ku, Maui, or Hiʻiaka, though a goddess of magic, flowers, and dance may be less than fully appropriate for a Battlemech!

A bid to sub-license designs from Jalastar Aerospace on Panpour includes 3 chassis in the light, medium, and heavy classes: the Javelin, Centurion, and Grasshopper. The existing designs will be updated to the needs of the Aurigian military while the assault class will be homegrown under the operational code name "Project Cormorant". The new technologies chosen for inclusion are Double Heat Sinks, Ferro-Fibrous Armor, CASE, and Endo-Steel with the former 3 being able to easily refit existing machines while the latter being a foundation for future units.

The new Javelin model trades the SRMs for LRMs and laser back-ups, able to keep pace with bug mechs and out gun them at range while 2 tons of re-loads allow it to harass larger Mechs and hunt down vehicles.

It's an attempt for what will become the Federated Commonwealth, to provide aid to Aurigian Reach against their neighbors.  They will allow Jalastar Aerospace of Panpour to license their 3 mech (Javelin, Centurion, and Grasshopper) to be modified to the needs of Aurigian military.  It will require 3 los tech, DHS, FF Armor, and ER LL to get it done

Javelin AU (or the Tewhatewha)
Based on the Javelin 10F mech, but having more in common with the speed and mission of the Jenner.  IE high speed recon and harasser units.  Should allow for 50 a year

The custom Aurigan mech, the Cormorant was envisioned in the scout mech role as a 30-ton skirmisher/scout hybrid.  Moving at the same movement profile as the common "bug mechs" it is intended to counter, the CMT-2AU gains a range and firepower advantage by upgrading the typical medium laser to a large laser located in its right arm.  The large laser has the power to breach the armor of any component of the common Wasp and begin to damage the internals, potentially crippling its target in a single shot.  The twin machine guns located in each side torso feed from a single ton of ammunition, and are useful for quickly eliminating infantry and giving it extra chances at critical hits when striking components that have already had their armor removed by the large laser.

Protected by 5 tons of armor, the CMT-2AU can easily afford to trade shots with other light mechs, defeating superior numbers of modern 20-ton mechs while losing only about half its own value.

The Griffin was chosen as the Aurigan medium mech to function as a swift trooper mech, capable of leading a scout lance as well as standing as body guards for a primary firing line.  Utilizing double heat sinks to save on weight, the Griffin-3AU features two large lasers to punch holes at standoff range.  Making up the close range bracket, a single large laser supplements a double pack of SRM 4s and a small laser for finishing heavily damaged targets.

The Archer chassis was adapted into the ARC-5AU to serve as the dedicated fire support component of the Aurigan main battle line alongside the GRF-3AU.  Equipped with 20 LRM tubes split into a 15 tube and 5 tube launcher with a total of 3 tons of ammunition between them in the right torso, it utilizes CASE to limit the effect of an early ammo explosion.  The left torso was modified to carry a PPC as an ammo-less supplement to the LRM racks, which allows the ARC-5AU to maintain some degree of fire support even after the ammo is depleted.  4 medium lasers, two in the arms and two of which face backwards, provide some degree of self defense against scout mechs as it fights or attempts to escape.

The ARC-5AU moves at a modest 4/6 speed profile and is protected by 10.5 tons of armor, both of which are low-balled slightly to make room for weaponry as it isn't meant to be engaging at close range.  The LRM 5 can be fitted with supportive ammunition types for defensive operations.  17 single heats sinks are enough to allow for perpetual long range fire from a defensive position.

The BNC-5AU Aurigan Banshee was developed to spearhead assaults or stand in the middle of the battle line, threatening imminent destruction of anything that dares to close while providing AMS cover to its allies.  A large laser allows it to contribute to the fight from in front of the fire support mechs in a way more immediately meaningful than intercepting incoming missiles, but compare to its smaller laser banks seems like an afterthought.  4 medium lasers serve as the primary armament, and 6 small lasers support its promise of obliterating anything that it manages to close into get its assault-weight hands on.  2 extra medium lasers are aimed backwards to protect it in the brawl that it will naturally find itself in.

The BNC-5AU has maximum armor for its weight allowing it to outlast its foes in a fierce melee, and 13 double heatsinks keep it cool enough to maintain a sustained assault on targets that should have been previously damaged by the rest of the main line.

Ten entries, fourty designs...I'll be reviewing these for a bit, but THANKS to everyone who's participating, I'll try to get judgement up by Sunday.

Special thanks to our final contestant, Gigastrike, but I'm not entirely sure I caught all your Foundtech use-I only see AMS and double heat sinks.  If that's all you intend to bring to the party, I'll award a couple of bonus points, to negate the ones lost for your Assault being mostly a med-las boat.

I suppose TAG for my stuff counts as one, but even without SGLRMs it's still good for indirect spotting, so I'll only claim 3 tech pieces as well.

Is this actually a competition?  I just brought a Banshee cuz it was funny.  Also, yeah I have 2 mechs with double heat sinks, 1 with CASE, and I guess AMS is lostech.  Forgot that one.  I thought it was just uncommon.

The by the same company made my options not what I was wanting.  I was looking for Warhammer made by the same company who made Jenner, in the end I used my Jenner mods on a Javelin, even made that comment in the design.

The Aurigian nation has recently completed negotiations with the Federated Suns to acquire licensing to produce some of the most iconic mechs in the IS as well as technical specs for several early pioneered found tech technologies that the Federated Suns has been researching for over 20 years  (CASE, DHS, & ERLL).  They have also completing design work on a completely new medium class mech.

I've updated my four submissions which now include two quads and are heavily Capellan in character. Also, more Mech can be produced due to change in Mechs.

For the three LosTech upgrades, I chose double heat sinks, CASE and ferro-fibrous armor.  Licensed designs all come from the Helm Memory Core, selecting the Crab, Guillotine and Mackie to adapt to Aurigian manufacture.

Finally, for the top slot, I went with an Aurigian version of the Mackie.  Though it has 15 double heat sinks, it is not recommended to fire an alpha strike.  This MCK-9AU can either fire the two PPCs and large laser at range, or fire the large laser, 4 mediums and the AC/20 in close.  Either arrangement keeps the 9AU running cool even moving at top speed.  (25 per year production)

Hm, costing out mine...

Cormorant: 2254590 - 66 per year
Hunchback: 3721000 - 60 per year
Hunchback Variant: 3886000 - 19 per year
Rifleman: 4846400 - 61 per year
Stalker: 8226025 - 30 per year

That's splitting the Medium weight budget to make lances of three close-in HBKs and one fire support "leader" type.  Otherwise you could turn out a clean eighty straight HBKs a year, based on the budget.  I would of course scrape a little bit from the light mech production, or even the heavies, and budget them at 60 'Mechs per year for Cormorants, Hunchbacks, and Riflemans, bump it up to 20 Hunchback Variants, and roll with the thirty STKs as it is.  That'll net an overall savings of twenty million c-bills.

I hesitate to say that the Rifleman is the primary MBM of the concept.  That said, 32 points a turn, every turn, is not something to sneeze at especially in the periphery, and it's got enough ammo to handle most lesser threats.  I still just see them as a fire support ride, rather than a frontline combatant, even with as many as are turning out.  It can keep up with the Hunchbacks, at least, though your force mixes might be strange...let's see.

You get 276 'Mechs a year, in a ratio of 6 Cormorants, 6 Hunchbacks, 2 Variants, 6 Riflemans, and 3 Stalkers.  That's 23 'Mechs a month, not quite enough for two companies (but close enough)...kind of an odd "short battalion" though.  I suppose, for a battalion, you could shift numbers a little - 8 Cormorants, 12 Hunchbacks, 4 Variants, 8 Riflemans, and 4 Stalkers.  Two recon/skirmish lances of Cormorants, with the command/assault lance of Stalkers rounding out the first company.  Two battle companies, with one lance of Riflemans each backing up three HBKs and a Variant. 

You could get there by choking RFL and STK production a little, as well as the Cormorants, and pouring the rest into HBKs.  Let's see...I could churn out six of those battalions a year, that's two regiments...

Cormorant: 2254590 - 48 per year - 108,220,320
Hunchback: 3721000 - 72 per year - 267,912,000
Hunchback Variant: 3886000 - 24 per year - 93,264,000
Rifleman: 4846400 - 48 per year - 232,627,200

Combined, I'm significantly overbudget on the mediums, but well under (by 40-70 million) on each of the other lines; that should be enough for buying dropships full of spare parts, ammo, and other things; that's a LOT of AC20s on the field and still a lot of LRM15s and Large Lasers covering them.  Total price for a year's production at those numbers is 899,448,120; is coming in underbudget with a rough force organization worth bonus points?

Nuts, I didn't even realize I was running into four technologies - I was rolling with DHS, CASE, and TAG but I forgot about the SPL-equipped Hunchbacks.  Could always swap those into a third ML I suppose, since KAMEA DISLIKES SMOKE apparently.  Or just say "they came with it from the factory" since I just took the 3050 HBK and improved it slightly.

I guess I could make an alternate competitor, take an ARC-2R and pull the LRM20s and CT lasers off, add DHS, add in two LRM15s with 4 tons of ammo and 2 SRM6s with 2 tons of ammo.  Kind of like a babby Stalker, as far as commonality goes with the STK design I made.  I can't get MML to work right now, stupid Java, so if you want to make the swap I'd like to see the stats posted.

They should only count as two different pieces if you fluff your ERLLs as being different models, because that would require building two different assembly lines...

Yeah, 3-4 technologies, slight bonus if you use only three, you can actually go to five if you like, but that's a steep *penalty* to your designs.

Its a pity the laser-focus on cost makes XLs a non-starter.  Ive some fun ideas for what could be done with a standardized powerplant and to some degree standardized armament profiles to lower logistics burdens. That said, XLs are likely not in the periphery mech budget.

If the restrictions weren't tied to national or corporate theme, a light, medium, heavy and assault quartet assembled on top of a 300XL would be interesting; Ten years later with OmniTech being in play would also lead to very different but cool solutions. All food for thought for other design challenges...

How about an Auriga 3100 with just that in mind?  Granted, the 300 XL game has been done plenty, but that's no reason not to!  And you still get a 30 tonner, 50 tonner, 60 or 75 tonner, and 100 tonner out of it.  You can play the same game with a 240 engine, though you're dealing with lighter weights - 30, 40, 60, and 80 instead, but you can still make some solid challengers.  Hell, a 20 tonner 12/18 speedfreak might be funny at the bottom end of that weight class...

Actually XL's might still work.

Unless the Aurigan's have a bunch of different factory's to use up all that money.... they can't meet the raw tonnage in # of assaults possible by the C-Bills.

If the Davions could only make 5 Atlas's per year & the Mariks a whopping 12 Battlemasters,  I'm not sure the Aurigans can pull off 2 full companies of whatever SFE mech we submit.

Their factory is going to need to be Hesperus on steroids I think to make 200 mechs a year.

Earthwerks/Keystone happens to produce 4 mechs, 1 per bracket, & it totals 70 Mechs a year for 3135 tons.

The entire FWL made less than 500 mechs a year in 3025.   SW Damaged factories to be sure, but a tiny nation like Aurigan isn't going to be able to come close to that & won't be packing a pristine SL era automated factory cranking out hundreds of mechs a year.

Just something to think about.

Much like Warships, the # of factories would in theory be the limit here v/s the raw cash.

Fair point, though you're also injecting FASAnomics into the equation.  Maybe that budget's a one-time-only deal, total max production over however long?  That'd still give the Aurigans a couple hundred 'Mechs based on all our numbers, plus whatever salvage they can come up with.  Not nearly as much as any of its neighbors, but enough perhaps.

Damn, this is making me want to stat out the entire military.  Or else do some boneheaded things like mixed lances, where you get one 'Mech and a few vehicles to round it out.  I admit I like the Cappie augmented lances for the periphery; two 'Mechs and four various vehicles as a single independent unit.

In 3025 a single site manufacturing 200 'mechs a year would be way too juicy a target to secure, which is why it wouldn't do to have one; in the 3050s it would be less outstanding. Still, one expects that in order to build 100 million C-Bills worth of 'mechs would require several hundred billions (maybe trillions?) of C-Bills in manufacturing equipment, but that still pales when compared to the costs of DropShip manufacture, nevermind SpaceStations, JumpShips and WarShips!

At the risk of further derail - I always preferred the XL mechs, the fusion vees, etc., at least for offensive operations.  And make em as big and capable as possible for their speed and role, too.  Spend the money.

Because it is, I think, cheaper.

Hear me out.  The major constraint on offensive operations are those two most expensive things in the BTU - A collar on a jumpship, and a mech bay in a dropper.  Compared to those things, mechs are rather less expensive.  So if slapping an XL engine in increases 1 units combat power by 20-30%, and I then have to provide less droppers (or can carry more supplies!) it may pay for itself.

Now, mind you.  Thats offense.  Defense should probably be vehicles and infantry, locally produced or shipped in during off-season.  Amusingly, vehicles are probably still fusion if you can get them, because a fusion vehicle of the same capabilities as its ICE twin is actually -smaller- and thus cheaper, usually.  Plus no fuel...

I'd actually disagree with the use of XL and SFE 'Mechs - I'd keep the XLs at home on defense, and send the SFEs on the offense.  Here's my thinking:

Offensively, I'm on someone else's planet.  That requires DropShips, and more often than not I'm not holding terrain.  Either I'm invading; if I win I hold the terrain but if I fail the mission then I have to return to my ships.  If I'm raiding, all my guys hop in the ships and leave whether the mission is successful or not; I'm not there to occupy terrain.  Three of these outcomes (raid/invasion, win/loss) result in my troops needing to vacate the field - I want survivable machines that stand better chances of making it back TO their dropships if the need comes.  The fourth outcome means that I will have 'Mechs that will be away from major repair facilities for extended periods, as victors of an invasion, and will need to be survivable and reliable to hold ground long enough for my repair and logistics to follow up.

Defensively, it's my front yard.  Naturally I'd want all the firepower I could get, but I can accept less sturdy 'Mechs for it.  My repair and resupply points are going to be much closer to the fighting, and this time the four potential outcomes break in my favor - either the raider quits the field, ceding it to me, or loses the invasion, again ceding it to me.  In those cases, any 'Mechs that go down remain in my control, and can be salvaged for repairs.  Turnaround for repairs will be much faster and more comprehensive than they would be using ad hoc facilities on foreign worlds, putting my 'Mechs back in the field.

In the fourth defensive case, a successful invasion, well, that's defeat in total anyway - no point in worrying about whether I can repair stuff.  My government is likely heading for the hills and I'm likely to set up guerilla operations at that point, which don't typically do well with 40 foot tall giant robots.  Then again, considering the most likely source of invasion would be from Canopus wanting a return on their investment...

Daryk: JVN-10AF Slow for a light, and short-ranged-it may not be able to catch hovecraft or VTOLs, but is decent for bullying other light mechs and well armored.
   WVR-6MA Trooper wolverine-a close-in fighter with SRMs and small pulse lasers for AI work-but no variant ammo tonnage.
   C0R-1A Jumping 75 tonner, with a slightly confusing warload-overlaps somewhat with AWS.
   AWS-8A 4 PPCs, 2 Pulse lasers, good design, some Zombie potential.

ANS Kamas: CMN-1A  TAG is interesting, but without artillery missiles, shells or Semi-guided LRMs it’s not useful, procurement of those advanced munitions may be difficult and expensive. Overall a good Light mech hunter, and does compare well to the WLF.
   HBK-5A+Varient  The hunchback alone is very short ranged and slow but the varient is long-ranged and slow. Tag features again, but synergies are good here if they can waddle close enough to use it.
   RFL-4A heyo, thank you SLDF.  Very good firepower for a 60 tonner, but does it still have the AA computer?
   STK-4A While this lacks ‘put down’ firepower, it has some nice features.  TAG is back, and it might add a bit of long-range punch.  Damage bands are pretty much 34 and 34,

DOC_Agren: Javelin AU: The Med-las spam is excuseable,
   Centurion AU: Solid armor, but needed as it closes the distance to short range.  Depends on medium lasers to fulfill trooper role.
   Grasshopper AU A jumping infighter with ER lasers to shoot in, and
   Cormerant AU More a sandblaster than a sledgehammer, this design calls for lots of up close work shot in by those big ER lasers.  But is it supposed to do the same role as the Grasshopper or what?  Armament is nearly identical, and similar to the centurion.

Gigastrike: CMT-2AU Decent firepower and armor, and what looks like standard speed.  Seems to use no foundtech?  Points for cheapness, but what’s the point?
   GRF-3AU  less long-range fire support, more ‘midrange face-puncher’ with double Large Lasers with SRMs to finish the job.  Live ammo bombthough….
   ARC-5AU:  Split firepower and good ammo endurance-and the use of CASE questions why there is none in the Griffin.
   BNC-5AU: Another strange design choice-a close in brawler mech (Kamea doesn’t like the heavy secondary armament much but bit her tongue) with doubled AMS-but only one ton of ammo.  It can’t stay with the fire-support mechs-it needs to close in, so ‘covering it’s allies’ is clearly impossible.

Hellraiser: Javelin-11G: All small guns Javelin, clearly a vulture-type which might synergize well with the-
   Tigris: A bigger wolfhound with LRM firepower, using a smaller engine.  Long-range skirmisher, limited by single ammo bin somewhat.
   Marauder: Oversinked by a hair at range, very zombie trooper, good long range firepower.
   Atlas 1.5: A sort of halfway house Atlas, pulling the large autocannon of a traditional design, but with the large arm lasers of Kamea’s personal ride.

DarthMetool: SHG-2AU Lots of SRMs, medium lasers, jump jets and decent speed-space for two types of ammo as well.
   CRB-25AU: small crab, big Blazer, technically head-capping, machine gun w/CASE, good ground speed.
   GLT-4AU: short range brawling Mech, with Blaser
   MSK-9AU A major deal-breaker-these have been out of production for centuries and nobody is interested in resurrecting the flagship design of the Terran Hegemony, no matter how long they served in it’s armies.

Wereling’s designs were okay, but miss the requirement for Anti-infanty gear on a trooper.  MaxCarrion had too many extinct designs that would be hard to source tooling for.  Darzoni’s designs feel like they need a lot of tweaking and improvement.  NullVoid would have been a strong contender had the Gladiator, a design which is extinct with prejudice, not graced his lineup. DOC was perhaps too similar in the choice of weapons, and their mechs fail to seperate into distinct roles. Gigastrike pulled together some very Level 2 designs that are period appropriate, but not really appealing. DarthMetool wants to resurect the Crab and the Mackie, which isn’t in the budget.  These guys have to make do with oatmeal cookies-without even raisins.

That leaves Hellraiser, ANS_Kamas, Daryk, Shrapnel, and (SMD) MadCow in the running.  I award a single Molasses Crinkle to each of you for surviving CUT ONE of the operation, and proceed to CUT 2.  Hellraiser has a nice tooling savings in recycling an engine, and good fluff, +2 points.  Kamas, your designs show good unity of purpose and can call for artillery easily.  Too bad there's not a single Arrow IV launcher for love or money...  Minus a point for throwing in an extra variant, but maybe there can be some common tooling between 180 and 200 series engines, and the 240 and 255.  Daryk grabs 3.5 ish technologies, I dunno if I should count pulse lasers separately or what.  Your engines and parts are all over the place, so you don't recover a point there, and I don't grasp your fluff here.  Shrapnel has great fluff, but I'm lukewarm on a design that depends on six Medium-pulse lasers for true face-mulching firepower. +1 point for fluff, -1 point for being slow overall and -1 for odd weapon choices that I can't get excited about, but your funding points might make you a contender anyways.  Finally, (SMD) Madcow has good fluff, good designs, overall, I like this a lot, except for a slightly underwhelming assault.  +1 point for fluff.

Kamea INTERUPT to deliver special bonus points to those who used 2 or more SLDF designs.  +1 point for Hellraiser, Daryk.  +2 points for ANS_Kameas, a fellow of wealth and taste who used 3 SLDF designs to cater to a fangirl.
Alexander awards Good Neighbor bonus points to anyone with fluff of a neighboring power.  +2 points for Hellraiser, Madcow, and Sharpnel.
+1 point to everyone for Good Logistics, you all pass this one with flying colors.

That's a final total of Hellraiser 6, ANS_Kamas 5, Daryk 2, Shrapnel 5, and (SMD) MadCow 4.  Hellraiser is our winner, and will walk away with the Grand Cookie Asortment.  ANS_Kamas and Shrapnel, as runners up, you get to share 2-dozen chocolate chips.  MadCow takes third, and recieves a dozen of my Pecan Sandies and a sincere 'well done.  Daryk, you get an extra Crinkle and a 'better luck next time' man.

Well, them's the breaks. I went with the Gladiator because it's the only medium 'mech in StarCorps Industries' lineup until they develop the Antlion in 3117...

Appologies, but you should have gotten 12 cookies (2 dozen split is 1 dozen each).  If you feel you got an inferior cookie however, I'll allow a 1-1 trade for Pecan Sandies or any other cookie I have offered.

Meh.  Thought I had a decent lineup, but that's the way the cookie crumbles.  Still, I should have mentioned I picked the 'Mechs I did because I couldn't find anything in the Sarna wiki that said the licenses were being held in 3051.  Figured they were free and clear to use without paying for a license.

I do have one nitpick about what you said with the Mackie.  According to the MUL the 5S and 6S were resurrected during the Jihad by the Steiners and Mariks respectively.  Later than your 3051 date, but still there.

I would point out that TAG is still useful even without specialty munitions; it eliminates the +1 spotter modifier for generic indirect LRM fire - and I brought a lot of LRMs.

and I was trying to limit in my designs to a limited # of weapons, and besides the fully redesign Javelin to be able to run down a Assassin, I limited my engine changes.  And designed them so that the techs in field can transfer knowledge on 1 machine easy to another from the plant.

But it was a fun challenge

I know why mine didn't do well in the financials, bigger engines cost more. Just look at the difference in the Centurion at 4/6/4 and 5/8, then the fast Assault needs a nice big engine too.
