"Rules of Engagement remain in effect: weapons free only on my orders."

On Callison during the Third Succession War, the beleaguered Silver Hawk Irregulars must brace for yet another raid, but winning the battle may not be in the the planetary government's best interest.

Given how often the environmental damage is mentioned (and how gleefully they inferno the forest reserve) this almost begs for a bitter follow-up story about "after the victory"... but yes, good story.

Question, though: Is this story supposed to be part of the Gray Market serial? The mercs do tip the scales in the end, but their screentime is very small.

Yes, it's supposed to be part of the Gray Markets serial. Not all of these stories focus directly on mercs. Some of them focus on how regular troops get screwed by politics and Machiavellian maneuvering, and this story is a good example of that (although there are mercs in the story).
