(Return of) Harley's Custom Choppers
« on: 03 April 2018, 12:01:54 »
The Custom Choppers are intended to be a band of lunatics and misfits who none the less are a functional and extremely effective Mercenary Unit.

The one of the core themes of the unit is that they're lead by a woman who is as much a tech as a Mechwarrior and have taken it as a mark of pride that basically everything they use has been to some degree customized, tricked out, or otherwise modified. Just make sure the modifications have some internal logic.

This takes place around 3025. Equipment rules are a bit more lax. I see no reason why Rocket Launchers, MMLs, Light/Heavy Machine Guns, or Retrotech technology like Rifles or even Retrotech equipment couldn't be used. The idea that all R&D simply derped out during the Succession Wars, or they forgot how to build less advanced technology makes less than no sense to me.

Characters need to be confirmed by me, just to make sure that they're not too over the top (or Mary Sueish) and unlike the old version, we don't have stuff 2 chief intelligence officers and 3 "Oldest Member of the Unit"

Now to Start it off:

Major Harleen “Harley” Davidson is the commanding officer of the Fighting Choppers Mercenary battalion.  Born on Solaris 7, she is the daughter of a Mechwarrior and a Tech. She was born a bastard, the product of short dalliance between a minor champion and one of his ‘biggest fans’.  Her very existence is a fact that always grated on the nerves both the wife and wife aforementioned champion. She was a minor Combine noblewoman, who had been unable to produce and heir, while his last name was ‘Kurita’, being a very distant relative of the Combine’s ruling family. Despite her illegitimacy, she was still his daughter and his only child, so he protected her.

For most of her life she was raised by her mother, but her father took responsibility for her, much to his wife’s constant irritation. She grew up on her mother’s knee, learning her trade as a tech, while her father ensured that she was properly taught how to pilot a ‘Mech, as was her blood right. Her idyllic life lasted until her 17th year, when her father was killed in the stadium, when his Shadowhawk suffered a blow to the SRM which caused the cockpit to be sprayed with fragments, crippling the mech and killing the pilot.

Much to the contention of the wife, Harleen was named her father’s heir. Soon afterwards Harleen’s mother was killed in a ‘freak ammunition explosion’ at the Mechbay where both of them worked. Harleen was not there, avoiding death due to a traffic delay caused by minor accident. Guessing that it was an assassination attempt, she went to ground and two weeks later his father’s wife was found brutally murdered in her own home. There was no evidence of forced entry or theft.

Soon thereafter, Harleen reappeared to collect her inheritance. She had her father’s house and mother’s condo both placed up for sale and left on the next Dropship to Galatea, taking her father’s battered Shadowhawk with her. The only delay in her exodus was to withdraw 15,000 C-bills from her bank account, which was paid to parties unknown.

Upon reaching Galatea she used her inheritance to begin the Choppers, using her insider knowledge as a tech to assemble a crack staff. She goes by her mother's name as her father's is somewhat... polarizing.

Harley is a pretty young woman who looks about as threatening as a playful kitten. She has long brown hair, a wide friendly smile, and an attractive figure. She rarely has a cruel word for anyone, and can make men twice her size shrink down in shame and humiliation with a strongly worded lecture. She is friendly, honestly kind, and seems to bring out the best in even the most hardened lowlifes and psychopaths. She seems to be the last person you’d ever expect to see in a Battlemech as much as commanding a half-mad band of hardened killers.

This appearance is quickly dispelled in combat. Under her soft and fluffy exterior she has pure steel. She is a superb Mechwarrior with a warrior’s sense of honor and strong grasp of tactics, who is as single-mindedly ruthless to her enemies as she is friendly to everyone else.

She still pilot’s her father’s old Shadowhawk, having replaced the SRM with a Zippo Flamer and using the additional weight, added an additional Martel Medium Laser to the left arm. Her AC5 was destroyed in a recent battle, and rather than find a replacement, she mounted a damaged Donal PPC salvaged off a wrecked enemy Warhammer along with a pair of additional heat radiators.

Martin van Brocklin came to the Choppers from the Capellan Confederation and carrying a Solaris VII pedigree.  After his Capellan unit was mostly destroyed in a disastrous raid on Irian in the Free Worlds League, van Brocklin took the opportunity to forego ransom back to the Confederation and sought asylum in the League.  In order to escape easy retribution from Capella, he meandered his way to Solaris VII, hooking up with a minor stable named Lorenzo's Devils.  He became their master technician and the sole reason the Devils lasted as long as they did, which wasn't very long.  In the lance-on-lance grudge match that ended Lorenzo's Devils against another minor stable, Trid Grid, the Trids cheated when it became apparent the Devils were winning, unleashing two extra Mechs they had held in reserve.  Martin scored an amazing three kills on opposing Mechs in his modified Avenging Angel version of the Vindicator, leaving him the sole survivor of the match.

While he could have turned this situation to his advantage and moved up to a better stable in the Solaris Game World, he decided to simply take the useful salvage the match had generated, which was quite a lot.  Selling it to other stables, he bought a ride to Galatea and its Mercenary Hiring Hall.  Having quite a bit of scrip left even after this journey, he could afford to take his time and carefully choose his employer.  Davidson had to work to convince him to join her.  Not that he was immune to her charms, but what truly swayed him were her answers to theoretical tactical situations with which he questioned her.  Having been truly impressed by her knowledge and especially her conviction, he signed on with the Choppers.

All of this backstory might convince you Martin van Brocklin is a stable, veteran Mechwarrior.  Far from it.  While he is indeed a skilled pilot and technician, he talks to himself.  Loudly.  And constantly.  Others around him can never be sure if he's addressing them directly until he gives them a frustrated sigh and addresses them directly in an annoyed tone.  Also loudly.  As you might guess, this leads to others often responding in an angry tone which raises the blood pressure of everyone involved in the conversation.  This has led to a couple of brawls in the hangars as tempers flare and spiral out of control.  As a result of this lack of social grace, van Brocklin is not a pretty sight these days.  A squat man with a wide-shouldered build, brown hair and hazel eyes, he's had his nose broken several times and a cauliflower ear.  As a result, he's at best a ruggedly handsome and somewhat short man, but most people would describe him as a grumpy, ugly dwarf.  The large beard he sports does nothing to change the image.

In the saddle, van Brocklin is a calculating sort, keeping his speed up and always looking for the sniper shot with his PPC.  To help deal with the lack of torso rotation in his Vindicator which he nicknamed "Lightwish," he ripped the missile turret off an SRM Goblin, welded it to the right shoulder, and replaced the LRM 5 with a pair of SRM 4s, tearing out a few heat sinks to keep the chassis balanced.  Knowing his Mech has jack-all for armor, he is leery of close combat and will avoid it when he can.  Most of the time, he has very acute situational awareness and self-preservation.  However, he has been known to occasionally lose it when missing shots with the PPC and has at times charged in to kick a target.  So far, he's been lucky...

MML3s were not a thing during that era. And he wouldn't be the master mech technician. I'm thinking that should be it's own role... after all, to keep a unit of what are basically Frankenmechs running you'd need an absolute wizard as the top-hat.

Though I do like the implication that a lot of the pilots are also techs.

Now that I've discovered Artillery Cannons, I'm going to take another shot at Roger Calthorpe's "Shatter Hawk"

Code: [Select]
Shatter Hawk II SHD-HBK2

Mass: 55 tons
Tech Base: Inner Sphere
Chassis Config: Biped
Rules Level: Experimental Tech
Era: Succession Wars
Tech Rating/Era Availability: D/X-F-E-A
Production Year: 3025
Cost: 4,895,107 C-Bills
Battle Value: 1,108

Chassis: Unknown Standard
Power Plant: Unknown 275 Fusion Engine
Walking Speed: 54.0 km/h
Maximum Speed: 86.4 km/h
Jump Jets: Unknown
    Jump Capacity: 150 meters
Armor: Unknown Standard Armor
Armament:
    3  Medium Lasers
    1  Thumper Art. Cannon
Manufacturer: Unknown
    Primary Factory: Unknown
Communications System: Unknown
Targeting and Tracking System: Unknown

Overview:
Roger Calthorpe isn't bitter.  No, not bitter at all.  He decapitated the
Shadow Hawk that destroyed his Hunchback, after all.  Just one piece of perfect
timing for both of them.  Of course, that Hunchback had been in his family
since the Second Succession War.  And not a day goes by that he doesn't hear
about it.  But he's not bitter.  The Shadow Hawk is quite a bit more
maneuverable than the old Stolidity, and is only slightly less well protected.
Paul Eutel and his crew did their best to pack Stolidity's firepower onto the
larger frame.  No.  The cockpit at least is familiar.  Even if the jump jet
controls are new.  No, not bitter at all.  Despite being reminded EVERY DAMNED
DAY that his family's legacy ENDED on some rock because some no talent recruit
in a Shadow Hawk got lucky.

Thumbs up!

Bit more on the man himself would be nice though, and the design process that lead to the Shatterhawk too. :)

OK, first, the design process...

Paul Eutel looked at the few remaining serviceable bits of Stolidity and shook his head.  The poor machine was wrecked.  It's engine and gyro were shreds, and nothing remained of the structure that should have held together its torso.  Even the massive autocannon had succumbed to the failure of containment when the fusion reactor was breached.  One of the Medium Lasers was at least salvageable, and the cockpit at least as intact.

The headless Shadow Hawk that had spelled the doom of the Hunchback was actually in much better shape.  Aside from a missing head, it had only taken superficial armor damage from falling to the ground.  That said, it's weapons load was almost completely inadequate for a Hunchback pilot, especially one with a family history stretching back to the Second Succession War.  Unfortunately, the largest caliber cannon Eutel could lay his hands on at the moment was a damaged Thumper artillery piece.  The end of the barrel had been deformed in a fall, but that was nothing a cutting torch couldn't fix, as long as a snub-nosed cannon was called for.  Lopping off most of the barrel to get back to un-deformed steel shaved five tons off the weight of the weapon.  Unfortunately, that was still heavier than the Shadow Hawk's usual cannon, and something had to go.  Eutel opted for the SRM-2 first, it being the closest match for the difference in tonnage.

Later on, during integration testing, Paul discovered the Hunchback's targeting computer was stubbornly set for one large cannon and three energy weapons.  The LRM-5 proved to be simply incompatible with the new cockpit.  Shrugging his shoulders, the master technician ordered it removed, and replaced with the salvaged Medium Laser from the Hunchback.  The computer took it, but that left a significant amount of tonnage to be re-purposed.  Stuffing the Hunchback's cockpit into the slightly larger head assembly of the Shadow Hawk left enough room to increase the size of the laser the cockpit was designed around, so a second Medium Laser was added.  The remaining ton left Paul in a quandary until he remembered the similarity between the legs of the Shadow Hawk and the Wolverine that had also fallen during the battle.  Sure enough, there were connections for the plasma tubing, and space enough for an entire Jump Jet assembly in the Shadow Hawk's legs.  Smiling to himself, Paul ordered the salvaged Wolverine Jump Jets installed in the newly dubbed "Shatter Hawk's" legs.

Let me know what you think! :)

I like it.

Though maybe have the AC get shot off to justify the effort a bit more clearly?

Hmmm... I kind of like the "just not big enough for a Hunchback pilot" angle.  I suppose we could say the AC/5 barrel was bent by the fall, but I already used that with the Thumper...

I've got a few things to do on my list before I get back to more flesh on Calthorpe's bones, and Vicelli after that, but I WILL get to them... honest!  :)

How about the cannon's spindly ass mount failed when it fell, and maybe just have the barrel of the Thumper take a laser blast that kinda made it melty.

Original Pilot was Lynn Tasako, who used to be a trained engineering sapper turned lostech prospector, she recovered this wreck from an old battlefield and has bought it back into some sort of battlefield status.  She had to trained her daughter Regina to become the next pilot.   Regina is an okay Tech, decent sapper, and decent mechwarrior.  Where she doesn’t shine is in personal combat with her trusty handgun, she rather use the sawed off shotgun to spray and pray.
Now her brother Klaus, is a genius/mad genius Tech and Gunner, and should have been the been the next pilot, until he suffered a massive feedback loop.  But the Warhunter is carrying 1 of his either brilliant or crazy idea as he managed to rig 2 standard Magna Mk III cores to fire as as a single weapon with a great punch effect, with the side effect of massive heat spike.  He also has a plan for a PPC to overcharge it before it can fire to but as of now his Sister has resisted the his weapon design, because she concerned about the cooling system of the Warhunter and melting the arm off it.  Also see his sidearm which appears to be a sawoff lever action rifle, which he claims he can punch thur mech grade armor with.

Warhunter
Is the Bastard Child of a Archer 2K and Warhammer 6K, The base mech was the 6K, but arms are off the 2K as is the Left Torso.  Do to damage, most of the systems have been replaced or juryrigged like the blazer in the Right Arm by the mech's tech Klaus.  The engine had to be replaced with a slightly smaller one, salvaged after Regina almost got shot apart.

The character I placed in the Vindicator has pretty much the same Mech as a character I supplied last time around, but that character is male this time.  But I should think new people and new designs are allowed, since we have new toys we can use that weren't available last time.

That said, I have always deferred to PsyckoSama as this was his idea from "go."

I think the whole point of a new thread is new members... Of course, I'll defer to Psyckosama, but I'm interested to see what the new blood brings in.  That's not to say I won't be posting my original designs eventually, but I am trying to run a game down in the Roleplaying sub-forum...

A bit more on Roger Calthorpe...

Before the loss of Stolidity, Roger had been a proud scion of a MechWarrior family that had won its place during the opening days of the Second Succession War.  The family served the Free Worlds League for over a century as members of the 4th Regulan Hussars, right up until Anton's Revolt.  The opening moves of that conflict went relatively well, but once Duke Anton's fortunes began to wane, the 4th deserted his banner.  Wolf's Dragoons exacted a heavy price from the regiment, and Roger's father was lucky to escape Vanra at all.  To say the loyalty of the regiment's remnants was questionable was an understatement, and many of survivors departed the League entirely, washing up on Galatea as mercenaries.  Roger's father abruptly handed Stolidity to his son upon arrival on the Mercenary's Star, and retired to the hinterlands.  Roger fell in with the Choppers shortly thereafter, and the unfortunate duel with the Shadow Hawk was his first battle with the unit.  Roger has resolved not to break as his father did, even if the loss of the Hunchback was a huge blow.  His eyes are haunted by the former glory of his family, ended by bad decisions followed by worse luck.  At least he still has a 'mech, even if it's going to take some getting used to...

And tweaks to the design process as requested by Psyckosama:

Paul Eutel looked at the few remaining serviceable bits of Stolidity and shook his head.  The poor machine was wrecked.  It's engine and gyro were shreds, and nothing remained of the structure that should have held together its torso.  Even the massive autocannon had succumbed to the failure of containment when the fusion reactor was breached.  One of the Medium Lasers was at least salvageable, and the cockpit at least as intact.

And here's the re-post of Vicelli and his Wolverine:

Henry "Boom Boom" Vicelli is another survivor of the most recent Marik Civil War.  The inspiration for his mech, "Double Trouble", came to him shortly after he regained consciousness and found half of his Wolverine and teeth missing.  Swearing off ammunition just as soon as the wires were removed from his jaw, he set about badgering the Choppers' techs into duct taping two large laser cores together in place of the AC/5 and ammunition that had been his undoing.  Bastardizing the specifications for a Marik Wolverine simplified this process somewhat.  It's unclear whether Boom Boom's use of his personal blazer rifle as an example of what he was looking for helped or hindered the techs.

Boom Boom is stocky, and has some fairly gruesome facial scarring that he blames more on the medics than the explosion itself.  Others blame it on his continual attempts to talk with his jaw wired shut.  The only person in the unit able to get him to shut up with less than the threat of physical violence is Ware-Armitage, and that's only because he was sitting next to her the night Morley picked her up.  He's actually glad Morely did that, because thinking back on it, she didn't seem too happy with his Anton Marik stories, and it could very well have been him that she filleted.  The tech staff at least is jealous of Ware-Armitage for this one particular ability.
