Bullock Series Tactical Truck
« on: 28 September 2012, 20:26:26 »
Ok, I've finally come up with some stats for the trucks I've been drawing.  Note the pictures are a work in progress, both trucks need work.

I've been searching for some sort of paradigm for my cargo hauling trucks for a long time, for medium wheeled support vehicles I think I've settled on something.  Trucks are tractors, with engines sized for cruise MP:4, but those engines are also capable of towing a trailer with approximately the same cargo capacity as the truck at MP:3.  So far most combinations have worked without exceeding the engine spec for the only the truck at MP:4.

So to the trucks:

Sandia Heavy Industries Transport Division Logistic Vehicle Series

Logistic vehicles, trucks capable of hauling between 5 and 50 tons, are the main hauling component is most transportation systems found on well developed, and not so well developed worlds throughout human occupied space.  Though more expensive to operate than trains or ships, on a per-ton of materiel transported basis, they offer a flexibility unmatched by their larger competition.  Ships and trains can only get freight so close to there destination.  In a well developed industrial park piers and rail spurs might run right up to the factory, but only in the most well developed industrial zones.  So in steps the nigh ubiquitous truck, to transport the freight to the final destination, or frequently, completely bypass railways and ships altogether.

Hundreds of concerns in human space build trucks of all sorts, for all sorts of transportation needs.  Sandia Heavy Industries Transport Division is just one of dozens within the Federated Suns alone.

Sandia’s Bullock series of logistic vehicles is part of a class of trucks designed for use by particular customers with special needs, in this case the AFFS logistics corps.  The Bullock forms the backbone of many AFFS transport companies within Draconis March, moving all manner of supplies for the combat corps.

The Bullock series is designed much like any other military logistic vehicle: rugged, off-road capable, with a good cargo capacity, and for ease of use.  The Bullock has a semi-modular design to allow for easy modification in the production process or in the field.

As an example most Bullock chassis are designed with a slide out power pack behind the cab to provide easy access for maintenance, or even replacement if necessary.  Since the vehicle uses hub mounted electric motors in all wheels to drive the vehicle, as long as the power pack is an electric generator of some sort just about any standard engine can be installed.  This could, of course, affect vehicle performance and characteristics, such as speed and cargo mass available without overloading the chassis.  ICE power packs are the most common but fuel cell and battery based systems are popular, and though expensive, and relatively rare, fusion power packs are also available.

A wide variety of equipment and accessories are available on the Bullock, the vehicle can be outfitted for just about any mission a utility vehicle is likely to be used for.  By far cargo hauler versions of the Bullock are the most common coming off of the production line.  Materiel Handling Cranes, almost universally known as lift hoists, are the number one accessory type installed on the Bullock series, with Palletized Loading Systems running second.  Some models of the Bullocks have both.

The Bullock comes in several weight classes, although the 30-ton and 55-ton classes are the most popular.  The Bullock ranges down in size to 15 tons all the way up to 75.

The Bullock is a solid performer SHI, having generated a substantial portion of their revenues for decades.  The AFFS might buy the lion’s share of annual production but sales to paramilitary and mercenary organizations are high too and many private companies that require rugged, reliable off-road capable trucks also buy the Bullock.  SHI plans to keep the Bullock in production well into the future.

Muscle it with the strongest – Bullock.

Canonically, standardized intermodal containers in BT come in 10 and 25 ton sizes. Seeing a truck with what is clearly an intermodal-type container but only 21 tons of cargo makes me sad.

A 20 ton container is pretty reasonable, as a multiple of 10. The extra ton could be a box of odds and ends, or a cargo loading exoskeleton (or two).

Great trucks, Boilerman. Like a lot of logistics geeks in this game, I've designed similar ones, but your fluff puts them over the top.

Thanks for the support gomiville.

FA as gomiville pointed out the ICE powered 55 tonner works just fine with the 10 ton containers.  The 25 ton containers, to my knowledge were mentioned in a single FASA era BT book.  I think it's fair to say the 25 ton container, as a standard, is dead in the canon, at least I consider it so.  But if you must have it, and as mentioned in the fluff, there is a 65 ton version of the Bullock, with an ICE engine and 1.5 tons of fuel it has a 1000km range.  It's cargo capacity is exactly 25 tons and costs 315,100 C-bills.

There is 0.5 tons not listed for all the trucks, reserved for the odds and ends stuff like extra seating and lights.  The remainder of that 0.5 tons is additional cargo space, which leaves 385kg for the above designs as they are.
I assume that cargo is stored in the cab and in the small cargo boxes I've put on the trucks, or intend to when I've finished drawings.

I agree always nice to see support vehicles flushes out the universe a bit
My three main Alternate Timeline with Thanks fan-fiction threads are in the links below. I'm always open to suggestions or additions to be incorporated so if you feel you wish to add something feel free. There's non-canon units, equipment, people, events, erm... Solar Systems spread throughout so please enjoy
