Huh. I have an old White Dwarf a friend gave to me because it had a Battletech article in it, from back before it was just a house magazine. This has me wondering what I did with it.

I have all this info in my full product inventory, which I'll be reposting once I've made a few tweaks to the new spreadsheet format.

On the list I posted I did the Battletechnology, Stardate & Dragon Magazine. I seen the Challenge Magazine posted here and grabbed it, and the Mecha Press, Space Gamer & Games Review were emailed to me from a forum member (cant remember who with the old PM posts gone now). You have a lot I have not even see so we should conspire to compile a complete list!

Well, I've posted everything I know of.  If you PM me an email I can send you the spreadsheet, which contains a lot of data like price, year and publishers.  Note that I have added one more to the Challenge, Issue 60.  There are a couple in the late 50's-60's that I haven't gotten my grubby paws on yet, so there may be more added in the future.  Everything before Issue 50 is certain, because 50 has a handy article index.  Since I got me a handy new scanner/printer/fax for Christmas, I've been debating scanning all the articles in, but I'm leery of legal problems.

Legal issues suck.  I realize we have to protect IP, and all... but...

Challenge magazine?  Published by a company that no longer exists?  Stuff like this should be ENCOURAGED to be scanned, for the archival value.

It's like the classic television shows like WKRP and Tour of Duty that can't be issued in their original format on DVD because the music companies won't license the original soundtracks for a reasonable amount of money.  Thus, these classics get hacked up before being delivered to the public.

For the purposes of historical archival, I really REALLY wish there was a change in our copyright law.

But wasnt it an issue of Stardate that had the original "Quirks" rules for mechs from the 3025 fluff ?
Thinks like the Javeling falling over & the Rifleman/Jagermech anti AA fire ?

You know...those are a lot of very interesting 'Mech names and such.

I would love to get digital copies of those designs, with images if they had them.

HMP comes with 'Mechs from BattleTechnology, FutureWars, MechForceUK, and TechFactory.  There are a lot more there that I WOULD love to have.

There are so many that it would just be cool to play with for one offs just to see what they're like.  :)

There was a lot of good stuff in them, but the relentless focus on mercs to the exclusion of all else......wore thin with me.

Seems also to me, that a lot of things in those magazines eventually transitioned into the rules at some point later.  For example
infantry with towed ACs, which I believe was in a Challenge issue.

There was a magazine called anime squared from the mid 90 that had one artical about the knight sabers written for battletech at the time. They did not incude the mech sheets but did a basic over veiw on the writeup. I forget which issue it was. I will have to dig it out since I remember the artical well since I wrote the bloody thing.....

Battletechnology Magazine
I've got a handful of the old BattleTechnology fanzines packed away in my gaming closet.  Interesting stuff, IIRC.   :)

For the purposes of historical archival, I really REALLY wish there was a change in our copyright law.
There's been a steady errosion of the public's rights under US copyright law (longer and longer copyright periods, denial of "fair use" copying, DRM, etc.) over the years.  There's a lot of people who argue that current copyright law has swung too far in favor of the creators (although what it really means is in favor of the corporations that produce the movies, TV shows, music or books).   :(

Yes, it's the dreaded Thread Necromancy!   >:D

I found this thread after doing a Search for something else, but the brief bit in the Search Results caught my eye.  There's a Company called Far Future Enterprises (FarFuture.net) that is selling most of the old GDW games systems on either CD or DVD, in PDF format.  I picked up the CDs for the Twilight 2000 rules, versions 1.0 And 2.0/2.2, and each one includes scans of EVERY Official product that was made for either version, along with a couple of nice Fan Made items from Norway (for the 2.2 edition).  They also came with the associated articles from Challenge Magazine.  When I got those 2 (both on CD), I also got the DVD of Challenge magazine, which also lists the index for what would have been the last print issue (#78).  There's nothing else about that issue, just the index, but it's neat for the sake of "Completeness" anyway.  If I remember correctly, the site is owned/run by Marc Miller, one of the guys from GDW, and I know he worked on the T2K games.  He also sells the various Traveller systems, including 2300AD and Megatraveller.  I just popped the DVD in and you can apparently buy the magazine collection at DriveThruRPG also.  Anyway, it beats trying to hunt down the magazines!  It's $45.00 from FFE, but still cheaper than trying to find the collection elsewhere.   :o  It's got the entire run of #25-#77.   O0  Might I add, they also scanned all the ads, so that's something interesting also, and there's the odd page that's been scanned upside down.  ;D

@Jal Phoenix - I don't know if it's worth adding or not, but #54 also has a Variant of the Achilles BattleMech called the Myrmidon.  Also, Issue 30, at the end of the article Building the Perfect Mech, their example is called the Lucien.  I tried entering it into HMP, and it wouldn't let me make (and Save) a 'Mech that's 12 TONS Overweight.  :-\  Duane Loose did the art for the 4 Jumptanks from #36!   O0

Issue 61 also has the Kelson Support Vehicle (Hovercraft).
Issue 73 on the PDF has 3 copies of the Ranger Record sheet, rather than 1 each for the Pulsar, Pulse Leader, and Ranger 'Mechs.   :-\  Then again, I've had my copy for a few years so that May have been corrected since I got mine.  I've no idea if the print version actually came that way or not either.  But hey, it's got a Firestarter on the cover!   O0
Issue 76 mentions BT on the cover, but has no actual content for it within.  :P

I never got any of the issues of mechforce, but I did pick up a lot of the battletechnology mag issues at the local gaming store back in the day.

I liked a lot of the articles, scenarios and similar.
there was a really evil thing in one magazine I think it was whitewolfs ... "crittertech" where you used "points" to build monsters to fight mechs, you could go lots of low powered ones (swarm of giant ants) or a single nasty they used a Godzilla equivalent in the article.

there was another one in an issue of I think far and away that I have, where they radically rewrote how weapons apply damage, for instance lasers abruptly were either devastating or worthless, missiles could be either ineffective or good for pretty much a one shot kill etc.
basically autocannon had almost no penetration but were really good at scrubbing armor.
lasers were all penetration, and only did like 1 point of armor damage, but could potentially wipe out all your internals IF they penetrated
missiles were flexible and potentially deadly, I remember a scenario where I loaded a salvo of F&F (Fire and forget) inferno lrm's and slammed a mech with an absolutely INSANE heat sig, then attempted to follow up with a salvo of heat seeking HE missiles, but another enemy in the arc ended up having a higher heat signature, due to damage, 2 engine crits, massive overheat and .... so it took the massive lrm salvo and was almost obliterated.

As I've said in the past, one of the best things about Challenge magazine was how most issue feature a human being attacked by some sort of horrible monster. My personal favorite is Issue 54. That chick never had a chance.

Grud, can you check a couple of issue for me?  I've never been able to verify if these have Battletech content or not:
57
58
59
62
63
64
65
66

I've been looking out for them lately, and knowing in advance would save me having to buy them to find out.  Granted they're still an excellent resource to have, Battletech or not, but as I don't game anymore I'd prefer to just collect the Battletech issues.

Jal - I actually looked through all of them to check on just that, but your list DOES include all the ones with BT content.  :-\  They eventually started including Shadowrun articles also, sometimes just short fiction.  It was only about 1/2 as many as had BT content though.  I find it Interesting that some of the content from Challenge is now "Canon" in one form or another.   ^-^

Issue 67 - Game Aid: On the Cutting Edge -- It's an article on the "Apple Churchill Hawkeye 4077 weapon linkage system", which allows you to link identical weapon systems to fire together, with one "To Hit" roll. Rather than ONLY linking MGs together, it allowed you to link any identical weapons in the same location.  One example they give is a Clint linking 3 SRM 4's in one location, and 3 small pulse lasers in another.  You couldn't link 1 SRM 4 in the head with 2 SRM 4's in the LT, for example, or any other weapon system.  You couldn't link 1 SRM 4 with 2 SRM 2's, even if all 3 were in the same location, or any SRM/LRM with any laser/AC.  The ONLY weapons that couldn't be linked were LB-X and Ultra ACs.  I'm not sure when the MG Weapon Linkage System was introduced, but this issue is from December of '92.

Issue 69 - Game Aid: Infantry and Field Weapons -- As it implies, the article introduces rules for towed field guns, along with a table to determine the Experience Level of an Infantry unit, PLUS rules for Armored Infantry.  Not as tough as BA, but not quite as "squishy" as normal troopers either.  This issue would be from February of '93, and I'm Pretty Sure towed guns weren't made Canon until the past 10 years or so.

I was reading Sarna and I found that Games Unplugged #29 has a Battletech short story called Tales of the Green Ghosts.
Someone knows if this story is about the same Green Ghosts hitting IE or not?

I was reading Sarna and I found that Games Unplugged #29 has a Battletech short story called Tales of the Green Ghosts.
Someone knows if this story is about the same Green Ghosts hitting IE or not?

I was digging around again to see if any information popped up in the last 6 months in regards to this issue.  After again finding nothing but a dead-end ISBN and blank product listings for it, I have come to the conclusion that the issue never shipped and possibly never went to print.

Does anyone have a copy (physical or electronic) of Games Unplugged #29 to prove me wrong?  Please?

p.s. Sorry for the thread necro, but sometimes it's helpful to keep this info in one location.

Wikipedia says the magazine ran for 34 issues, but NobleKnight.com - who seem to have a product page for everything - only list up to issue 28, released in 2003.

Some tidbits you might find interesting:

From the PEG forums (http://www.peginc.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=9486&sid=71a89a549ca856d669bd7b8d6fb65ba0), 4 NOV 2003, Shane Lacy Hensley (Deadlands, Savage Worlds) posted this: "I've heard rumors that GU [Games Unplugged] might soon have new, er. . .policies."

From ICv2 (http://icv2.com/articles/games/view/4784/rojeks-arrest-short-circuits-games-unplugged), 27 APR 2004, is a story that shows the connection between convicted fraudster Ross Rojek and Games Unplugged magazine: "Tony Lee, the editor of Games Unplugged, reportedly had an issue ready to go to press when news of Rojek's arrest and the dissolution of The American Entertainment Group (Games Unplugged's parent corporation) reached him.  Needless to say Mr. Lee is now out of work and the new issue of Games Unplugged is likely to languish in limbo."

I think issues 29-34 do exist, but probably in very limited numbers. Most were probably seized and destroyed.

I had heard vague rumors of the trouble surrounding the death of GU, but nothing that specific.  Thanks for the info.

There must have been a character limit or something to my original post.  Funny I never noticed after all these years.

A few more that haven't been mentioned yet:

The Duelist, issue #20 (Mechwarrior content advertised on the cover)

The following are German language BattleTech magazines:

Life Support (MechForce Germany I, 8 issues)
MechQuarterly (MechForce Germany II, 4 issues)
Terra Post (MechForce Germany III, still going but now an online publication)
Warrior's Guide (Nice Dice eV, 36 issues)
Heavy Battle (Fanzine claiming official sanction, 8 issues)

Finally, in France BattleTech licensee Jeux Descartes had their Casus Belli house magazine with occasional BattleTech content, which apparently had a particularly convoluted publication history.

I don't know if I still have it, but back in the early 90s, the Virgin Megastore chain had a sub-set of games centres, which covered computer and tabletop games, and for a little while they did a semi-regular 4-8 page flyer with blurbs and preview material for upcoming RPG and wargame products. And a few months after the FASA 1993 update flyer with the Roadrunner and Devil came out, they reprinted the stats for those two mechs, but without the Down and Out in Temptown short story that also appeared in the FASA flyer.

Still wishing we had a CGL in-fiction magazine like BattleTechnology for the modern age.

Monthly quarters keep us up with year and events, which can feed our imagination for campaigns and other things.

It would work great to keeping things alive and well for the community when were in dry spots of releases.

I'd like to see the old "build a better mech" articles.  Those would be all 3025.  I wonder if it was "more ML Spam and no ACs"
