I'd love to be ambushed by this. :D

No, really -- the iHGR may come as a bit of a shock the first time it fires, but with a minimum range of 3 it's not really a "city" weapon as far as I'm concerned. The X-pulse lasers and AP Gauss only go so far to make up for that, and once I've managed to immobilize this monster I've taken an outrageous C-bill investment basically out of the fight as long as I take some care to avoid its front arc (which, again, in a city isn't likely to be such a big deal). The thick armor just means I can play "knock, knock, do you surrender yet?" for quite a while then...

Note also that all that hugely expensive XXL engine really does for you is...pay for your targeting computer. You're not going any faster with it, it just frees up 4.5 tons relative to a "plain old" XL model. So you could basically have much the same tank with an XL, sans TC, but with a second AP Gauss or something like that to take up that last half-ton. Armament would really still be a bit anemic, but that's about to be expected with this kind of super-armored brick.

As Lurker wrote - to expensive.
Tanks should be cheap - or have superior fire power - this "curiousity" is lacking both.
The Demolisher or the Fortune are twice as dangerous at lower costs.

Well even in more open terrain - where the iHGR and TC might work good - a LB-5X or LB-10X work even the same way - resulting in multiple hits turning a tank into rubble without tearing the armor apart.

Heavy Gauss on a hover CRAZY hopefully still fast enough to zip around into the rear arcs of mechs to put a Heavy slug into their soft rear ends :D

although i wish SAW had more CV experimental options like armored motive systems maybe next update though.

I don't know, I think I'd rather use this:

Code: [Select]
Model: Hover HGR (needs a better name)
Type: Combat Vehicle
Technology Base: Inner Sphere
Rules Level: Tournament Standard

Mass: 50 tons
Motive Type: Hovercraft
Internal Structure: Standard                          5 t
Engine: 265 XL Fusion (Vehicle)                      10.5 t
  Cruise MP: 10
  Flank MP: 15
Heat Sinks: 10 Single                                 --
Control Equipment:                                    2.5 t
Lift Equipment:                                       5 t
Turret:                                               --

Armor: 109 pts Heavy Ferro-Fibrous                    5.5 t

                      IS      Armor
  Front                5        37
  Left Side            5        26
  Right Side           5        26
  Rear                 5        20

Equipment:

Heavy Gauss Rifle (Front)                            18 t
@Heavy Gauss Rifle (12, Body)                         3 t
CASE (Body)                                           0.5 t
                                                   --------
                                                     21.5 t
                                                   ========
                                                     65 t

BV: 1,446
Cost (unloaded): 8,821,667 C-bills

Simple, straightforward, and to the point -- just a fast-moving assault gun. No secondary self-defense weapons, and ammo is a bit limited (a draft version had sixteen shots, but I decided I'd rather have this come home empty in one piece for reloads than see it crash and burn on the battlefield with shots still in the bin, so I ultimately put that extra ton into armor instead), so it wants to travel with similarly mobile escorts if at all possible...but it's decently fast, carries the big gun, and purely C-bill wise I can get four of this for one of yours. }:) (In terms of BV it actually costs a little bit more, but that's understandable enough; what I miss out on in terms of micro pulse laser and ECM, I get back in better armor -- layered on more thickly for the absence of a turret, plus I actually used all the points 5.5 tons of HFF give me -- and four extra shots for the BFG.)

This is actually an upgrade of a throwaway concept of mine from years back that I dug up. That one went only 9/14 on a standard fusion engine, though, and its armor was thinner (and only standard ferro-fibrous) to boot. Thus, arguably not really much of a winning design, and I figured I'd do myself one better and actually splurge on an XL powerplant this once. Sure it's expensive, but the heavy Gauss is nothing if not a signature Lyran weapon...and Steiner's got money. :D

Fluff? Okidoki.

The XX-95-45101 Urdu was developed by the LAAF as a proof-of-concept design for a heavy tank to supplement Battle Armour assaults in a war of reclamation predicted to eventually take place when Lyran secessionists from Skye attempted to break the Alliance. The FCCW halted further development of the design, which was shelved until the Jihad struck the Alliance. Desperate for armaments of any sort, the two prototypes were dusted off and hurried into production using a stockpile of 300-rated XXL engines from a cancelled “supermech” project. Though this required that the prototype’s 95-ton frame be increased to 100 tons in order to accommodate the larger engine.

78 were produced over the entire three year run, but as they were deployed piecemeal to fill holes in existing units, the Urdu never managed to gain much distinction among warriors; among techs, it was another story; the 300-XXL proved to be a marvel of simplicity for maintenance, putting a shameful light on the original design’s 285 XXL, which was installed in six other Urdus (besides the two prototypes); temperamental and hard to access, it proved inadequate to powering the HGR and APG simultaneously.

After the Jihad, many of the surviving Urdus were scrapped as required by treaty, but a surprising number passed to militia units on the clan front.

Goon enough?  8)

They don't work on the armor, no. They also explicitly don't cause pilot hits or penetrating critical hits through it.

What they do still do is inflict motive system damage on vehicles normally. Ferro-lamellor doesn't do anything about that. So while an LB 10-X can shoot clusters at this thing all day without doing any damage to its armored shell, it'll still wreck its tracks in short order.

Might mess up the paint job something fierce, too. ;)
