I've resolved to never take more than that to a fight with a human player. Large quantities of those guys is how you get groups to ban infantry from games.

My current group is already leaning that way because of my use of a mixed star of Horses' heavy jump and fast recon. Last game I lost a total of 6 troopers for four kills.

I play with Infantry a lot, along with Tanks then Mechs...

But I do make sure I support them as best as I'm able too.

Resurrecting this thread, because I've been faced with a challenge, and wanted some ideas from fellow Republic players.

The challenge is that next weekend, I must deploy a 4k BV RotS force consisting of a single Ares tripod backed up by infantry (armored or otherwise). It will be a city fight, and my opposition will be 150% of my BV in the form of a company of Urbanmechs (or as close as my opponent can get) with any leftover points going to infantry. Neither side may pay for improved pilots, with all units defaulting to 3/4 for free. My force is the defender, and starts hidden. Any thoughts?

In terms of the mech, I'm torn between the Hades (which runs hot, but is a clear brawler) and the Hera(which packs more firepower, but is more expensive). For the infantry, I'm leaning towards HMG-equipped suits owing to the close quarters and the possibility of having to deal with hostile troops.

No customs, please.

You can't go wrong with a mixed platoon of Kopis suits.  The standard suit is 2x Medium Lasers per suit and the Anti-Infantry variant is a Medium Pulse Laser and Flamer per suit.  Relatively pricy, but you're also bringing a pocket Komodo in each squad.

How about this?

1 Ares Hera
1 squad Kopis (Anti-Infantry)
2 squads Simian (HMG)

Comes out to 3988 BV.

Is the opponent limited to the stock 3025 Urbie or can they use whatever canon variant(s) they want?

Any canon variants, no faction or era limitations. I'm expecting RACs, ack-twenties, Arrows, zombie plasma, the works.

Tough.  I don’t know that there are any good recommendations here.

An Ares or Poseidon can cripple or kill an Urbie, maybe two, every turn.  That’s a fair fight against a half-dozen or so Urbies.  They have a shot at getting thru the superheavy’s armor in a half-dozen turns.

But a dozen or slightly less Urbies can either get through a superheavy’s armor in a turn or two or wear it down over a dozen turns if spread out.

If I was your opponent, I’d run a combo of mostly UM-AIV with a couple or few UM-R80.  The massed Arrow IV, whether TAGged by the -R80s or not, will eventually ruin the superheavy and infantry once they’re out of hiding and there’s little the superheavy can do in response.  Even the Sniper on the Orca is inadequate.  I’m not sure your infantry choices matter in this scenario.

If your opponent goes with more traditional Urbies, then I’d get as many units of cheap infantry as possible to distract, preoccupy, delay, and string out those Urbies.  If your superheavy only faces a couple Urbies at a time and the rolls go your way, then you’ve got a chance.  But it’s slim, I think.

FWIW...

It does help that it'll be a city fight, and I get to deploy my forces anywhere in the map, hidden. R80s are an issue, but I'm still hoping to force the fight to happen where I'll only have to face a few opponents at a time. If I determine he has no scouts or that I can deal with them, I'm considering revealing the Tripod early, to lure them past the hiding spot of the Kopis squad for some backshot hilarity. Also debating setting up the Simian squads as far forward as possible, their job being to quickly maneuver and take down any artillery he brings, wether they be Plush-mounted or infantry-towed.

I'll try to take pics! But don't get your hopes up for a Republic victory: I play Republic, Free Worlds League, and Northwind Highlanders a lot of the time, and I'm pretty sure the Chancellor looks favorably upon me. :D

I'll post a full AAR later, but so far, turn one has seen a full lance of AC-20 Urbies stumble upon my forward-deployed Kopis squad hiding in a light building....and completely wipe them out.

Here's hoping the rest fare better...

That’s about what I expected even with the old stock 3025 Urbies, although the 20-class ACs hammered it home in a single turn, instead of a couple.

Does Dawn Guards, the unit Stone gifted to Julian Davion, have specific color scheme?
Maybe the one in cover of Shattered Fortress?

The short story at the beginning implied the 'Mechs were painted in Republic colors, though it wasn't clear about if they had specific unit colors or something else.

EDIT Aand this probably should've gone to FedSuns thread but whatever. Republic equipment and origins!

Pretty sure the mech in Shattered Fortress is in the black and gold of the Hastati.

As for the Dawn Guards... Wasn't there a two-party book recently, one half Jade Falcon-focused, the other Julian? That might have something about them.

Uh, looks dark gray and dark red to me. Awful lot of melted 'Mech armor though.

Dawn Guard is white/yellow separated diagonally.  It showed up on a CSO post on facebook once upon a time, let me see if I can find it.

EDIT: here we go

Right?

They were originally described in Shattered Fortress as white and orange, which isn't much better.  White and yellow got posted to CSO in... looks like the same month(?) with the correction that it should be yellow.

If I were doing it, I'd probably have one battalion in white/yellow, one battalion in white/orange, and one battalion in white/red.  Dawn isn't just yellow, after all. ^-^

I'd find a planet, any planet, even one far from the Republic's borders, so long as its sunrise did not in any way incorporate the color white, and station them there.

What's the strategic situation on Pluto?

White and yellow? Ugh. My original plan was to have a Triarii, Principes, and Hastati companies. But Principes being white and gold, and Triarii colors being similar to Capellan Hussars/Red Lancers i'm planning stopped that plan, so i started thinking about Dawn Guards. Evidently that's a no-go too.
Even if white and yellow weren't difficult, i don't like that color scheme.

Currently, going to do Republic Standing Guard (unfortunate they got absorbed into RAF proper at some point, but i'll ignore that), Highlanders, and Hastati Sentinels. (And probably need to come up with a Davion unit, need to find some use for few Davion 'Mechs i got.)

I do like the dark gray and red in Shattered Fortress cover... maybe the Hastati Sentinels get a Knight leading them with those colors.

I forget that the Gray Watch is using. I read couple chapters of the Gray Watch Protocol book in the Dark Age Wolf's Dragoons book, Redemption Rift. (by the way a very good book).

Cool, is this website is companion or replacement for Camospecs website since it's has issues?

Only problem with the entry is i don't think the Watch is a Merc unit.
