Um, believe it has something to do with the ISF training program. Trainees are dropped on the training planet with basically a rock and a stick and are expected to survive unaided. The forests of said planet are inhabited by those things in the picture.

The creatures wiped out early attempts to colonize Pesht, but the Kuritas prevailed where the Ozawa Mercantile Association failed, and nearly exterminated the beasts in short order. The small remaining popuation lives in the forest belt surrounding ISF HQ on Pesht, providing supplemental security.
In "Fall Down Seven Times, Stand Up Eight" an ISF aspirant on New Samarkand has to fight one with a spear. It's implied that the critter was imported from offworld just for the test. Nothing's mentioned in modern info about the ISF training procedures about "death by monkey" initiation rituals, so that practice might have been scrapped at some point. It might just have been a Von Rohrs thing.

Just remember there is no magic in battletech, so a pegasus or a unicorn that talks is more likely to be a product from the Magistry of Canopus than anything else.
Not really. At that speed the impact behaves less like a conventional bullet strike and more like a bomb blast. You need an enormous amount of surface area per unit mass to get significant dispersal effects, and even there the net result could just be more spalling on the inside of the target which has the potential to cause more damage than a more focused strike would.

One of the things I love about the direction of the game these days is the trend to canonize everything. Heck we mention the hedgehog in Canon now. Anything is possible! And if we get the Huntress, we get a *battle*mech with those goofy track units. That would be novel.
