Title: Motivational - The Return
Post by: ssfsx17 on 20 August 2011, 00:12:23
Unfortunately, the forum archive does not have any attachments, which means, most of the posters are quite possibly lost forever.

Therefore, we must rebuild our stockpiles.

I've long believed that was an intentional ironic choice. Nothing else makes sense.

Minobu Tetsuhara.  He was a black samurai who had to kill himself because bushido is stupid.  Jaime Wolf was his second, the guy responsible for cutting off his head when Minobu began to show pain for sticking a sword in his gut.  This is what would have happened if Wolf were a jerk.

Now, now.  Bushido has it's points.  The thing is, Minobu was trapped by Greig Sampsonov - another servant of the Dragon who didn't buy into Bushido and it cost the Combine the services of Wolf's Dragoons and ultimately Sampsonov his head.  (I approve of that part.)

Wolf actually used a pistol since he was gaijin (a foreigner).  It was just as repulsive to Wolf as it is to Jal, but he did his best for his friend.  Natasha Kerensky was present and she was as stoic as Minobu.

Back to the motivationals!

It's the artwork the mini was based off, so it's very close to that.  Except the artist did a very strange thing with the legs.  Yeah, it was a dark time for Battletech art.

What mech is that?  It looks kinda like a Warhammer but I didn't think it was old enough to have a 'primitive' version.

it's a Hammerhands, which is intended to be a precursor to the Warhammer. 3/5/3, paired AC/10s, lots of ammo. fun in a city.

There's just something fun about the combination of Jumpjets, Inferno SRMs, and Precision ammo.

On a different note.

That is a nice 'Mech, although the range is a bit limited and the strategic mobility is not as good as the later designs.

Also, I am loving these posters, I just wish I had some of my own to contribute.

3 males played by geeks

1 thug played by a chick.

their deaths were slow and painful experiences, and their tears the nectar of the GM gods.
Last one to die was the thug.
Picked him/her off with a gyrojet sniper rifle at max range, as he climbed the ladder to his 'Mech cockpit and safety.

Well, a quick check on Google images shows plenty of 55 mph signs, 50 kph signs, and 60 kph signs but no 55 kph signs which would seem to indicate that it is the common 55 mph US highway speed limit sign.

Speak for yourself, I have seen plenty of far sillier things that have stuck around for a lot longer than that.  Of course, this would be adding layers of unnecessary complexity to the system and speed limits are generally government projects so you may have a point here. ;D

In the Glorious Golden Age of the Star League, millions of public works projects were completed monthly - on Terra alone.

And also, students would have walk to school, in 1.2m of snow, uphill - both ways, barefoot.  Except of course, that no student walked, they all had shoes, and Weather Control Units limited snowfall in residential areas to 0.5m.

Um, believe it has something to do with the ISF training program. Trainees are dropped on the training planet with basically a rock and a stick and are expected to survive unaided. The forests of said planet are inhabited by those things in the picture.

Not sure of the source. Intelligence Operations perhaps? Sorry.

It's a Pesht predator ape.  The creatures wiped out early attempts to colonize Pesht, but the Kuritas prevailed where the Ozawa Mercantile Association failed, and nearly exterminated the beasts in short order.  The small remaining popuation lives in the forest belt surrounding ISF HQ on Pesht, providing supplemental security.

In "Fall Down Seven Times, Stand Up Eight" an ISF aspirant on New Samarkand has to fight one with a spear.  It's implied that the critter was imported from offworld just for the test.  Nothing's mentioned in modern info about the ISF training procedures about "death by monkey" initiation rituals, so that practice might have been scrapped at some point.  It might just have been a Von Rohrs thing.

No I believe old Kurita book, I really want to say New Sarmakand Ape...

Protects the ISF HQ located in a jungle region from ground attacks, AAA shots down anything and the " locals " deal with the intruders.

TT
.
There's also metal eating sand around the HQ.

House Book Kurtia says they are New Samarkand Apes around the ISF HQ on New Samarkand

House Book Kurtia says they are New Samarkand Apes around the ISF HQ on New Samarkand

P. 180 of the House Kurita SB describes the ape creatures of Pesht, and that House Kurita drove them to the brink of extinction within ten years of settling the planet.

"Fall Down Seven Times, Get Up Eight," p. 6 (set on New Samarkand in the "D Forest"):  "Five years of relentless training in college and it all came down to a fight in the dark with a horror rumored to have been imported from another world?"

Intelligence Operations Handbook, p. 61, says that the Internal Security College on New Samarkand is surrounded by a sixty-kilometer circle of diacetylsilicate and anti-aircraft batteries, but make no mention of simian guards there.  ISF HQ on New Samarkand is a massive bunker (four square kilometers) at the mouth of the heavily polluted Di-Sho Delta, but no mention is made of simian guards or sand fields.  Meanwhile, on Pesht, the DEST Tactical Command Center is hidden deep within Pesht's forests, where "DEST commander saved the population of ferocious simian predators that originally inhabited the planet from extinction, encouraging their breeding behavior to further discourage intruders."

I think Randall wanted to use the Pesht predator apes in his story about the ISF, but at that point in Combine history when his story was set (it's one of the earliest BattleTech stories) DEST didn't exist yet, so there couldn't be a scene set in the woods on Pesht.  So, to use the critter anyways, he wrote it as imported to New Samarkand from offworld.

I can't find the reference to the apes being on New Samarkand - can you tell me what page it was on?

http://scienceblogs.com/startswithabang/2013/04/17/missions-to-mars-and-nuclear-fusion/

the Cracked.com thing jumped the gun..  they have the designs for the parts of a drive that could, if scaled up, propel a ship to mars that rapidly. they are currently having the parts to the small scale test rig manufactured, but it is a slow process because of all the custom work required.

it's not really a fusion 'torch' the way Btech drives are, not a constant thrust. it's basically an Orion drive using a magnetic 'pusher plate' and pellets of fusion fuel which are pinched magnetically into fusion.

No matter what the Bronie fans may says...

Oh come on.  The insane pairings are always the most fun.  You get to corrupt the happy friendly characters with violence (and sex if the Clans are involved [AAAH]) on the one hand, and on the other you get to see hardened killers trying to figure out what to do with the cute cuddly ponies.  Then you add in the cross reactions between individuals in each group who react differently to the situation and you get a wonderful pile of chaos even before you start worrying about things like the actual story.

For the record, I would really like to see how the ponies and clans react to each other.  The culture shock both ways would be a ton of fun. }:)

Shooting a pony out of a giant Rail Guns can't be all that healthy for the pony. And as for the target, well if its hardened the best you can hope for is some scratched paint and maybe a dent. Oh, and a dead pulped pony lying below said dented and scratched paint.

Actually, at that speed there is really not much difference between a pony and a DU slug of the same mass.  The kinetic energy is sufficient to blow whatever it is up on impact so the actual projectile composition is irrelevant.  That said, a pony will bleed speed off much faster than a compact slug due to air resistance which will also heat it up and vaporize part of its body in transit so it will be less efficient at getting the kinetic energy from the gun to the target, but on the other hand there is magic to consider....

What?  Why are you looking at me like that? ;D

Not really.  At that speed the impact behaves less like a conventional bullet strike and more like a bomb blast.  You need an enormous amount of surface area per unit mass to get significant dispersal effects, and even there the net result could just be more spalling on the inside of the target which has the potential to cause more damage than a more focused strike would.

Nothing's wrong with the concept, it's just that the NLRM is pathetic execution of it.  NLRMs are the opposite of Clan LRMs - reduce minimum range by adding weight.  You're always better off using that extra weight for a close-range weapon like a medium laser.  They are a step backwards in missile weaponry, hence NLRMs are GarbageTech.

I would say its a german position with 11" guns, that looks like on the turrets from Scharnhorst or Gneisenau

Wow, I knew they recycled it, but until now I would have never guessed where they put it. Good one.

Who says playing BT and hanging out on the forums doesn´t teach you something.

Does anyone know what happened to the other turrets?

Does anyone know what happened to the other turrets?

The "A" turret suffered direct bomb hit and was destroyed. Guns were salvaged and transported to Holland, where they were positioned in separate placements. Scrapped after the war.

The "B" turret was transported to Norway, but scrapped in 1960s.

So only the "C" turret remains, as it was turned into a museum twenty years ago. The position is 63°42'29"N   9°43'13"E

Give it time.

One of the things I love about the direction of the game these days is the trend to canonize everything. Heck we mention the hedgehog in Canon now. Anything is possible! And if we get the Huntress, we get a *battle*mech with those goofy track units. That would be novel.

I always like the Cattlemaster.  Sure it's not a super ubber assault mech, but its potentially a fun design you can see as the underdog in a Periphery fight.  Silly as it sounds.

Personally, i know their not loved. I still think the Champion should allowed to have been succeed in later age. Since it's cool looking LAM. XD

I apologies for sound effects in the poster, its was hard not to resist.

Yeah, it appears to be based on one of the covers of the novel Blood Legacy, which also featured an oddly shaped direwolf fending off jumping Timberwolfs.

It a 3D rendition of the Blood Legacy reprint cover

http://cfw.sarna.net/wiki/images/f/f9/Blood_Legacy.jpg?timestamp=20100914185208

What I gathered: Roc paid Roger Loveless for a rush job and no one bothered showing Robert any art of the Dire Wolf other than the front profile.

I honestly thought it was a Thunderbolt on the cover when I first saw it because everyone new what a Dire Wolf looked like in 1995 (Well, almost everyone)

The reference to Tolkien's 1925 poem As light as leaf on lindentree sort of serves as an informal kigo, the formal kigo being as I understand it impossible in translation because it serves to connect the poem to other poems using the same kigo and those are not usually part of the English reader's experience.  The connection here is, of course, to Luthien.  Takashi shared many of Thingol's vices, though for Takashi's greed set up the situation where his pride lead him to nearly ruin his nation while Thingol's pride set up the situation where his greed ruined his nation.

Pretty sure thats a Cestus - https://www.sarna.net/wiki/Cestus just a MUCH better picture of one than the horror of TRO 3058's art and its IMMENSE clown shoes.

If people are blowing up smokers they should probably be put into some kind of home.

I would have never guessed a Cestus, I don’t think I’ve ever thought about that mech even once.

I mean, it's not a bad 'mech stats-wise, but it looks like a fish with legs doing the Counter-Strike "Press B to crouch" meme.

Incredibly, it's still not as ugly as its TRO3058 heavy stablemate, the Dragon Fire.

The dragon fire is probably my favorite IS mech ever, but dear god every time I see it is so ugly. Every rendition makes me sick

I will say that the Dragon Fire mini was surprisingly almost decent considering the source material.

Here's a pretty damn nice fan redesign: https://www.deviantart.com/giorgioespinos/art/DGR-3F-Dragon-Fire-782095639

I have still never seen anybody even attempt to redesign the War Dog. "Menacing and easily recognizable" the fluff says. Well, 1 out of 2 ain't bad? I sort of love the thing because it has maybe the most "quirks" (not the rules kind) of any 'mech that's still somewhat actually usable (FIVE tons of gauss ammo)... but for the life of me, I can't begin to figure out what you'd even "latch on" to as visual elements to carry over to a new design. The "fins" on top inboard of the shoulders? The vertical air intake kinda things in either side torso? Just throw it out and start over.

I'd drop to Fifteen Racks, give double ammo, and upgrade the Micro Pulse to Small Pulse.

Galaxy Commander Santa
Ghost Bear, unbloodnamed
Age: 65 Freeborn

Hailing from Clan Ghost Bear, Santa has a very strict rules of warfare that he expects everyone to follow or suffer a personal Trial of Annihilation. Born a Freebirth from two Society Trueborn warriors, his mother a seasoned Elemental while his father an exceptional MechWarrior, Santa was placed into a Trueborn Sibko secretively by the Society at an early age. Raised witin the very strict Sibko, Santa fought hard and triumphed greatly when he got the unheard of command post of Star Captain by defeating three of his Sibko opponents, including the Ursari. He became a ristar after that, defeating many in his personal Trials, he quickly rose to Star Colonel status where he languished for years. As a false Trueborn of an unauthorized genetic reproduction, Santa kept his codex close. While slowly improving his skills, he soon was stonewalled with politics.

Accusations of an illegal union, he was forced to go unBloodnamed. Seeing an end to his meteorical rise, and his immediate placement into a Freebirth Solahma unit. Upon transferring, he was immediately challenged by the unit's upset trueborn commander. Thinking Santa as an easy example, and to prove his eugenics was superior, he challenged his subordinate to a Circle of Equals, which they lost. Immediately crying for another trial, this time for perceived grievances against them, which they lost, again. Piloting a lighter weight mech against the Galaxy Commander, Santa showed how a MechWarrior fights. Taking the ex-commander's Dire Wolf as isola, he had it converted to the Widowmaker variant, which he renamed Rudolph.

Excepting their fate, the now Star Colonel stepped down. Santa, the new Galaxy Commander, ordered combat readiness drills, the likes the Clan Ghost Bear have never seen. His personal Keshik Battle Armor Point is made up of Warriors that can surpass his strict ultimate protocol testings, the Elemental Leaping Formation, the said unit must leap unpowered in full armor across several hard obstacles to join. Needless to say, only the most hardy and muscular get to join Santa's ELFs. Charged with protecting Santa, these ELFs are also his Watch Commanders, equally on and off the battlefield.

As they say, he has got a list, checking it twice, he will find out if your naughty or nice... quiaff?

How is it not 750 pages, after not leaving that screen for an entire dog's life? Please, god, post more! Get it to 50 pages, PLEASE!!!

Also the joke of a unit designed for 1 environment that was then modified to serve in another.  MS Igloo had a Z'Gok that was modified for Space to Atmosphere use, renaming it the Ze'Gok.
