 NEBULA CONFEDERATION TECHNOLOGICAL SPECIFICATIONS
During our stay with the Nebula Confederation we only got to see very few designs in person, which limited our opportunities to gather technical specifications. With other known designs we could only gather the most basic details. All these notable designs share one aspect, in that they tend to be aerospace designs that can use Skip-Drives. As one can expect, the Skip-Drive and other new technologies, had a significant impact on how the local battlefields look like, with combat doctrines centered around space combat, infantry combat, and precision orbital bombardment.
A notable detail is that most races are severely limited in the number of designs that they utilize, this is likely caused by their limited industrial base, as they often rely on refitted equipment or obsolete equipment from the more powerful races.

MICRO-SHUTTLE X-O
Mass: 9 tons
Type: Aerospace Fighter (Omni), Ultra-Light
Power Plant: Fusion XL, Skip-Core compatible
Armor: 2.5 ton, Heavy Ferro-aluminium
Typical Armament:
        3 tons of pod space
Notes:
The Micro-Shuttle has its origin as an ancient training fighter, with room for an instructor and small group of trainees. The underlying technology has been updated in several successive mark updates with the last commonly known version being the Mk-V. The design eventually fell into disuse in the Inner Sphere for being too fragile, but various locals have adopted it mostly as an aerospace APC that is easy to both manufacture and conceal when landed. The most advanced version is the X-O, which seems to be partly based upon reverse engineered Servus technology and is omni-capable.
The armor protection of even the older previous models can take a hit from a Medium Laser before going internal and are usually armed with a single small laser, while the X-O model can do far more both in offense and defense, but it is generally not advised to use these shuttles in open combat. When out-fitted with a Skip-Core it can independently travel between nearby star systems, but it would be smart to stick to safe routes to prevent emergency stops and hostile encounters. It has various possible configurations, examples include a cargo configuration that can double as bomber, an infantry configuration for tightly transporting a platoon, one with a Skip-Core and extra fuel for interstellar travel, or even configurations with loaded with sensors for conducting surveys.

EXPLORER-CLASS HEAVY CRUISER
Mass: 24000 tons
Type: DropShip
Power Plant: Fusion, w. Advanced Skip Core
Armor: 112 tons, Heavy Ferro-aluminium
Typical Armament:
        11 SCP/3 “Phased PPC VI”
        6 SCG/3 “Torpedo Launcher VI”
Features: Large NCSS, HPG, Medium Factory Unit, 6 Small Craft
Notes:
After seven years of practical experience and escalating conflicts it became clear that the Diplomat-class was not effective enough for combat. During this time the Confederation didn't sit still, but started developing another new ship based upon feedback from the Diplomat-class, which was then quickly deployed.
This class is highly capable for the purpose that the name suggests, with its launchers it can easily spread a large amount of probes, and with skip-capable shuttles can simultaneously cover multiple sites in a solar system. We have even seen stock footage of this class being able to submerge into the sea, and later rise back up to orbit. Although it is highly capable at exploring, it is likely capable of engaging normal smaller WarShips. This does come with risks as most WarShips would tear through the shield in short order.

Notes:
The Diplomat class can best be described as an armed Cruise Liner. Was developed as the final answer to the conflicts in the nebula. The designers took the carrot-and-stick approach very literally, with its massive size and weapons to intimidate, while the luxurious interior would show how hospitable and prosperous the union was.
A long period of peace and a great technological leap forward gave rise to the Diplomat-class. The weaponry consists out of 3 Sub-Capital Gauss used for launching Torpedo munitions and a massive array of Sub-Capital PPCs. This massive aerodyne was designed to show off how advanced and wealthy the Nebula Union was. As a result it looks and operates a lot like a luxury liner, the recent conflicts saw it being mostly replaced by more cost effective designs with a stronger emphasis on combat.
Traveling on this ship is a very pleasant experience, extremely spacious and luxurious, with large entertainment rooms and many other facilities, with these luxuries and it's massive size, it is designed to impress, not intimidate, this makes it very easy to understand why this ship is used for diplomatic missions. However many of it's capabilities will also makes it suitable to be a transport or carrier. However it is still more heavily armed and protected than previous designs. It also has many other advantages over previous designs, it has advanced manufacturing facilities, a larger array of shuttles and transporters, and a faster skip-drive.
It is also incredibly spacious, and its massive cargo bays can be reconfigured to transport a lot of conventional infantry. One of the most interesting claims is that the life-support system can support an additional 15,000 people by converting cargo space into improvised infantry bays. However in such cases it is limited by the fact that it has to rely on its shuttles to land the troops. The reason for this limitation is that while the Diplomat can land on a planetary surface, the engines can't generate enough thrust to reliably return to orbit. So any landed or crash-landed Diplomat will either have to be stripped down or be re-purposed to act as a local base.

Good point, I shall adopt that.

That was the original intent, but I wasn't happy with the layout nor were the large fiction pieces up to the standard that I want to set.
I wanted to write something with depth but is in-line with TOS and TNG, but that is so hard, hopefully I can get some inspiration out of the feedback.
Also I don't want to delay releasing this for more than a year (was originally intended as an 2019 April Fools release), so for now I will just post it as such.

Notes:  The Founder class was originally a local civilian refit of the Leopard DropShip that removed all the ammo based weaponry and 'Mech bays in exchange for increased cargo space and a Skip Drive. This class was later rapidly militarized by adding sub-capital weapons and point-defense bays. In this case they mounted the functional equivalent of two Sub-Capital Lasers and one Piranha Launcher. In time this refit became obsolete and most were demilitarized to be sold to civilians and minor races as small transports.

Hull: Monarch
Power Plant: Fusion with Standard Skip Core
Armor: 45 tons, Ferro-aluminium

        2 SCG/3 “Torpedo Launcher VI”
   18 Small Pulse Lasers
Features: HPG, Small NCSS, 2 Small Craft
Notes:  The Traveller-class was the primary ship design of the Nebula Confederation during the Rim War, although it is derived from the Monarch-class DropShip they outfitted it with the most advanced weapons that they had access to. Beside that it also has a standard Skip-Drive and many other features, such as a Small NCSS, a HPG, and basic factory unit. With these features it is a balanced ship that could operate independently for a couple of years if required.
This generation of ships introduced the Sub-Capital PPC and the Sub-Capital Gauss. These ships were a lot more efficient than previous designs and were able to explore large parts of local space.

Typical Armament:

        4 SCG/3 “Torpedo Launcher VI”
Features: Small NCSS, 1 ASF, Steerage Quarters
Notes:  The Boxer-class is an extreme refit of the outdated Traveller-class. These are faster, better armored, and have far more firepower. Even if the shield were to drop it has enough armor to take some hits. They designed this vessel to carry the maximum amount of pain in a tough little vessel.
However it had to make many sacrifices to gain this performance boost, as such it can't really operate independently. The onboard facilities, transport assets and the crew quarters are minimalistic for NC standards. They are usually deployed around fixed locations or assigned to escorting civilian convoys. In large fleets they are often deployed in attack squadrons.

That Founder class sounds Klingon-ish.

Just move each SCL to the wings and add a ECM and Stealth armor...

Of course, you'll want a bigger one.

Ive really enjoyed these - being Nebula Confederation gives us breathing room to get outside the normal 'run of stuff'.   Also really like the art, where you have it.  Sadly, art is harder to come by than designs...

Now that you mention that....

RIM ALLIANCE TECHNOLOGICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Although they started their old conflict with a technological edge from reverse-engineering SLDF technology which gave them ERPPCs and lead to Chameleon Signature Armor, they have since lost their edge as the Confederation became the first to introduce new weapon systems and brand new hull-types.
The living conditions onboard Rim Alliance ships are very bad, with steerage quarters being seen as being above average. Also the only fresh food onboard their ships tend to be pigs and worms that feed on any biological waste, understandabily many of their allies stick to their own rations.

RAIDER-CLASS FRIGATE
Mass: 1900 tons
Type: DropShip
Hull: Fury
Power Plant: Fusion with Basic Skip Core
Armor: 29 tons, Chameleon Signature Armor
Typical Armament:
        4 ER-PPCs
        1 AR-10
Features: Steerage Quarters
Notes:  Mass produced since the beginning of the Rim Alliance, now deemed to be almost disposable, it's fragile construction limits it to harassing attacks and raiding. Any attacks that pass the shield will quickly obliterate this ship. Has been observed to be capable of transporting large aquatic animals, why they were build with this capacity nobody knows.

It is based upon the Achilles Assault DropShip but sacrifices most of the older weapons and launch bays for a Skip-Core and the ability to deploy minefields for trapping other ships. The mark II refit that was recently introduced replaces the standard Skip Core with an advanced model that was likely reverse engineered from salvage.

Armor: 6 tons, Chameleon Signature Armor
Typical Armament:

Notes:  The Long Range Skip Shuttle is a quite common design among the various locals, it downgrades the engine for a single PPC and a Skip Core, but it is mostly known as the biggest and most well-armed ship that an Earnog is allowed to pilot in the Rim Alliance. Earnog pilots will do anything to retain this privilege.

There is a borg-like faction (See fiction https://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php?topic=68571.0 ), I just need to find some time to clean the design formatting and rechecks some numbers.

I just imaging the Borg faction would be have a swedish diet and being rather boring people.

MANEI SERVUS “BJORG” TECHNOLOGICAL SPECIFICATIONS
The following descriptions are the most notable ships used by the Manei Servus, however they also use many captured ships that they have altered for their own usage. Those ships are easy to recognize by their patchwork armor reinforcements and other modifications that clearly ruin their atmospheric performance.
There are also a number of common traits in each notable Servus ship; either storage space or factory space for supplying Servus implants. Another trait is the large number of infantry bays to maximize their possible workforce, this is not a problem for the life-support systems of the ship as Servus implants have an independent life-support function.

BRICK BOARDING CRAFT
Mass: 100 tons
Type: Small Craft
Hull: Bus
Power Plant: Fusion
Armor: 6 tons, Heavy Ferro-aluminium
Typical Armament:
        Unarmed
Features: 6 Infantry Platoons
Notes:  The Brick Small Craft is based upon the S-7A Bus and is designed to be used as a disposable boarding craft or suicide projectile. For this purpose it was given a massive engine upgrade and Infantry Bay, but the upgrade didn't include any weapons or Skip Core. Another possible threat comes from the fact that Servus Implants allow for cyborgs to survive nearly indefintely without external life-support or food, so even a stranded craft can be a longterm problem.

BALL-CLASS TRANSPORT
Mass: 4000 tons
Type: DropShip
Hull: Pentagon
Power Plant: Fusion with Advanced Skip Core
Armor: 57.5 tons, Heavy Ferro-aluminium
Typical Armament:
        2 SCG/3 “Torpedo Launcher”
        24 ERLLs
Features: 36 Infantry Platoons
Notes:  The Ball-class DropShip is based upon the older WOB Pentagon PWS and as a DropShip it is one of the few standard Servus designs capable of planetary landings, as such it is often tasked with scouting and planetary assaults. The normal operating procedure for the Ball-class is to perform orbital bombardment to soften up the target before landing nearby to deploy infantry for a conventional assault on the objective.

Features: 36 Small Craft, DropShuttle Bay, 6000 Infantry Platoons, HPG
Notes:  This class is an modernization of the ancient Cruiser-class, with systems being updated to modern or local equivalents. It is worrying however that post battle analysis of debris and sensor data has indicated that some of these are newly manufactured. It has to be noted that the massive on-board Manei Servus workforce is capable to perform hull repairs and dangerous damage control tasks whilest in combat, as they can handle hard vacuum and have no regards of their own lives.

        64 ER Large Lasers
Features: 12 Small Craft, Unpressurized Repair Bay (2M), 6000 Infantry Platoons, HPG
Notes: The existence of these ships are clear evidence that WOB had constructed Faslane YardShips in secret. We suspect that these were sent into the Nebula to set up new hidden worlds but ended up stuck here. These YardShips usually travel in a group and when constructing new ships they link up to form a large complex.

Cool little universe
Thanks, here is a little more, and I hope to add some tech notes in the weekend.

RUNALOT SMALL CRAFT
Debuted after the first encounter with the Bjorg threat, this new class of small craft is set to replace most of the existing SC workforce of the Nebula Confederation. With an advanced Skip-Core and thick armored hull its defenses are similar to larger obsolete ships, at the same time it has decent traveling endurance and because of it's semi-modular nature it can be easily refitted to specific missions. (Quirk: Modular Weapons)
The most common variants include an Attack variant for direct combat, a cargo variant that can transport over 50 tons of cargo, a minelayer that can carry five dispensers, and a reconnaissance variant with a wide range of electronics.

Skip Drive
Skip-Core technology is the preferred FTL propulsion system by many of the Nebula's locals. We don't know how it works but we do know that it takes plasma from the power-plant to the Skip-Core where it will TECHNOBABBLE, after which the altered plasma will be send to the engine exhaust to TECHNOBABBLE, creating a thin KF-Field around the ship, suitable for both for propulsion and defense.
This drive might have also been invented before, but it would have likely been deemed impractical. While it weights less than a Jump-drive (2% of TT), it is slower than an equally technologically developed Jump-drive, requires more fuel, not compatible with Jump Drives, and is highly explosive. These severe downsides should have made it a dead end technology for any previous inventor, and force them stop further development. However in the Nebula using such a system makes more sense.

Shield points: Total number of shield points is calculated by multiplying their Tonnage, Flank MP, and the Core Factor. Each type of Core has their own factor, 0.5 for the basic, 1.0 for the standard, and 1.5 for the advanced model. Also the reactors of WarShips, JumpShips and Space Stations aren't fully compatible with this system they can only use an stationary version (no FTL), this means that their Flank MP is equal to their station keeping thrust (0.1).

Stability Mechanism: The Skip Drive offers additional protection and independent FTL, but it is quite explosive and the stability of it needs to be managed. There are a large number of actions and events that induce more instability in a core, these include but are not limited to: Depleted Shield facing, moving shield points between facings, an emergency stop (determined by an GM), Engine hits, etc. If the instability increases it will produce side-effects such as sensor interference or weapons being inoperative, and if it goes too far the core will explode.
Core explosion can be prevented by either an successful ejection of the core or having the crew slowly stabilize the core (with successful piloting rolls), the number of rolls that can be made will depend on the number of intact crew/pilot hit boxes (each crew hit reducing the number of actions that can be taken).
An ejected core will explode if it collides with anything, is hit with a capital weapon, or if it is command-detonated. If the core explodes it will create an area-effect blast equal to the core tonnage in capital damage points. In space it will have an area-effect blast radius of 1 hex, Skip Cores from Fighters and Small Craft only affect their own squadrons.

Phased PPCs
This local modification allows for PPCs to have more flexibility, the new features of such PPCs are that it is then able to produce nearly any type of particle, the damage output can be dialed down to prevent excessive damage to a target, and with this modification a PPC is also capable of stunning conventional infantry from a distance by sending an electrical charge combined with a specific EM burst. This modification is possible with any type of PPCs, ranging from infantry weapons to Naval PPCs.

Chameleon Signature Armor
Early in the Rim War, the Rim Alliance reverse-engineered the Star League's null-signature system and found a way to apply it to capital-scale units. Like its predecessor this system mostly consists out of advanced electronic countermeasures and heat reservoirs.
Rules: While this does not allow a ship to escape detection when using the planetary drive, it does allow a ship to enter and exit hyperspace without being detected, as well as rotate in space.  While it is active no weapons can be used. The system also shuts down if any armor facing is depleted.

Sub-Capital Gauss
Sub-Capital Gauss Rifles, often referred by the locals as Torpedo Launchers,  is another weapon system that was invented in response to Skip-Core technology. In the past most local ships relied on capital missiles with fusion warheads to bring down any shields, however these missiles took up a large amount of the available tonnage and were vulnerable to point-defenses. A solution was found by scaling down Naval Gauss Rifles to sub-capital scale, and developing torpedo ammunition as replacements to nuclear munitions and sensor probes.

Gauss-Torpedo Ammunition
These Torpedoes are hollow Gauss projectiles with variable payloads. The payload options include fusion warheads, guided perpetrators, or sensor/communication probes. These lighter ammunition types frees up a lot of tonnage aboard a vessel, allowing them to be more effective and travel farther.
Rules: All Torpedo munitions have a +1 to-hit penalty. Guided Torpedoes use a precise kinetic penetrator, that is guided to a target by either a TAG or remote sensors. This torpedo is a favorite for precision orbital bombardment.
Fusion Torpedoes contain a tactical fusion warhead which is set to detonate if the armed torpedo comes into contact with a solid object or any type of shield effect. However this also prevents any internal detonations in a target.
The Probe Torpedo is an all-environment standard sensor-communication platform, as powerful as that of an ASF or 'Mech.

I was actually interested in using this for a fanfic. So a quick question--can skip drive be used within the KF limit? and since it's not so much instantly moving as it is travelling, can you get to a pirate point in it, or is the fact that the point is 'surrounded' by regions of space within the KF limit barring it.

Happy to help, this project currently on a slow burn as I am trying to finish some other major projects. But the results from those will help this project.

Skip Drive technology has a much higher tolerance for gravity than normal KF drives, so while it has a KF limit of sorts, its limits are actually in close orbit of celestial objects such as a moons or more massive objects. The Skip Drive comes with a safety system that prevents it from getting too close to any such dangers. This safety system works by projecting a very small part of the drive field far in front of the vessel and then observing the field interactions, this allows a computer to detect dangers in time to either automatically avoid or drop out of FTL. Faster-Than-Light is only allowed when the safety system gives an OK, so if someone damages the safety system then the ship will immediately drop out of FTL and won't go back into FTL until the system has been repaired.

Another limit is that Skip Drive cores and Jump Drives are FTL incompatible, which means that while they do not interfere by being in proximity, they can not take the other along in FTL. So if a DropShip with a Skip Drive wants to travel with a JumpShip, then the DropShip must eject its core and vent the associated plasma. Ships of such a size usually have a workshop and supplies for building a new core so in practice this limit is an expensive inconvenience.

The core of a Skip Drive is generally mounted as a piece of eject-able equipment in the aft of a spaceship. This also means that spaceships with a skip core should avoid critical hits to the aft as a hit to the core will cause it to violently explode, completely destroying the ship.

Awesome, I've updated the skip drive article on the wiki.

Question, how big is the Sub Gauss Rifle? How many can fit a weapons bay?

Awesome, I've updated the skip drive article on the wiki.

Question, how big is the Sub Gauss Rifle? How many can fit a weapons bay?
Here I have attached an excel file with the custom equipment table, just use them a Sub-Capital weapons.

For civilian ships this would be simple-- just have a recharge station that also carries cores that can be put in the dropship when it's dropped off (pardon the pun).
The ability of skip drives to move so much closer to gravity wells would make most conventional dropships fairly obsolete, and probably lead to more than a few designs with 1/2 drives and a skip drive, because they really don't need to move that far in "normal" space.

It would also mean that most systems would find it far, FAR easier to exploit their oort clouds and outer system regions, likely making them more common among belter communities.

Among the military the superior tactical mobility would make them a vital system, probably leading to a lot of research on if it would be possible to scale them up to warship size, especially for monitor style ships.

I'd allow at least two or more Skip Drives onboard Military vessels. Kinda like how Advance SubLight can reach almost Warp 1... (NG - DS9, later after Voyager upgrades the first time). Early ST would have half sublight speeds as later. (again, advancements in technology)

SubLight I = going nowhere, barely
SubLight II = 1/2 Warp
SubLight III+ = Warp 1 each level over III gives a slight faster increase in hexes per turn, if playing tabletop. Like SD-I gives theoretical speed of 2/3, -II 3/5, -III 4/6, -IV 7/11, -V, 8/12 and so on (Based on what speed Warp I is...)

then:

Skip Drive 1 = Warp 1
and every other upgrade is a Warp increase.

Good solution and I hadn't considered such a scenario before. My current rules assumed that a ship in question would eject a core that either might explode or would be command-detonated. So a station would not want to receive a possibly volatile core, so the ship in question will have to perform a controlled shutdown of that core and vent the plasma of the entire system before ejecting.

Yes, it definitely gives room for generic civilian cargo ship, would the Leopard CV or Drost be the best hull for a Civilian cargo transport?

Canon belter communities have also been shaped by their isolation, so belters in star systems that use this technology would either be just a part of the local culture or would have to force their independence.

I have been considering setting a maximum size to the Skip Drives, both for consistency and game balance, I can easily technobabble that very large cores are too unstable for use. I think that such a change won't cause any real problems as larger ships (WS/JS) can rely on Star Empire equipment for their shields.

One nice feature of the Skip Drive from my point of view is that it introduces Stability Management to aerospace combat, just like how heat management makes ground combat a lot more rewarding (it forces genuine decisions). However it also comes with a downside that it will require a lot of playtesting to properly tune that feature for balance and fun.

I'm gonna put on my historian hat here, and think about some changes.

1. It makes "clusters" vastly more interconnected. The the ability to use small ships to go from "planet to planet" with FTL likely means that concentrated regions of space see vsatly more development. Conventional jump ships might find themselves relegated more to "highways" where they could move large amounts of cargo to be shipped to the final destination by the skip-drive shipos.

2. even ignoring that, these ships are going to be "faster" than reugilar FTL for one simple reason--unless you're talking the use of pirate points which can be risky, many jump limits in the Inner Sphere demand five or more days flight to and from the world. And that will make some places "further" for conventional jumpships because the skip drive ship doesn't have to deal with it.

3. This is another reason by big warships may be relegated to tender designs--because while a heavy warship may be able to move faster in a strategic sense, once it has to start moving towards it's target, it will be moving slower than the skip drive ship, and that means the enemy is free to either jump on the warhsip or break contact.

As for the cores, what you could use would be some modified jump collar that includes a "high speed insertion" system, where the core can be attached very quickly, if need be, while ships that need to dock can either take the time to simply vent their systems, (8if time isn't an issue) or jettison it.

The period of vulnerability wouldn't be that big, since a tender could simply jump to say, a half light year's distance to the target, which would make it almost impossible to find, and give it plenty of time to fuel and deploy it's strike win.

Personnally, I hope you don't make the ships not able be larger than the standard 2.5 million.  It would make them more interesting to play.  You can rig it so it doesn't cause troubles for game balance.   I can picture eventually Nebulans building arc ships eventually finding away out of the Nebula and exploring the deep periphery.

I'm guessing the incompatibility between Skip Drives and KF Drives is because Skip Drives are still technically tiny KF Drives?
