ilClan Rec Guide 24 says Fred, still answering to that name, swapped out his Zeus for an Atlas during his fateful mission on Dromini VI in 3029. So a bit of an Aidan Pryde situation: you drive one 'Mech your whole life, then get into trouble while driving a substitute, and you become known for that substitute.
In fairness, he willingly took a cursed mech, then added Jump Jets to it, and even then one upped it with what is now known as a Battletech superweapon.

Look into Astrokaszy for a potential planetary battleground; it's wracked by warring factions on the world with only a few 'Mechs on either side.  It's also a place where both the Suns and Combine tested advanced technologies, even if it's a long bloody way away, so you can take on interesting surprises like prototype DHS on 'Mechs.

That's a secret of the magic, then. It means I didn't need to put aside thunder LRM as an option.

Well for the mine on the start of the game normal mine would be better. Else depend on the set weight it could be already detonated for their arrival. Although vibrabomb will detonates if it got the sound, while the normal mines have chance to not detonates.

I field a lance of VTOLs consistently, assuming the game parameters allow me to do so. I've found that they're exceptionally versatile, due to their mobility. Even more so if I put a quality pilot in each one and I don't have to worry about side-slipping when moving at flank speed. That lance of VTOLs has turned the tide for me in quite a few games.

Also from the wiki, linked in my post above:

Yeah, unfortunately the wiki doesn't clearly indicate which origin went with which continuity.

I could be wrong, but this seems like the answer to a question nobody asked.

That was my impression about pre-painted models generally (aside from as I say, for RPGs where you may only want a few models); I'm honestly surprised how many people are tentatively in favour of the idea. I was expecting much more answers like yours. (But on the otherhand, I hadn't twigged that CGL were experimenting with the concept.)

Specifically, Focht was the Atlas pilot. Fred drove a Zeus.

Maybe if it's a generic camo scheme for mook units. Otherwise, there are too many paint schemes to anticipate that it would look like something I need for a particular game. And since you'd have to concentrate on one unit, let alone one faction, in order to have a viable selection for force creation, I couldn't see it working well for new players or Catalyst.
