Lancer-class Destroyer Davion
« on: 29 April 2019, 01:02:15 »
I finally got a hold of the Strategic Ops book, and one of the things that caught my eye was that the Avalon-class cruisers were delayed.   So I decided to work on a design to take up the slack as an enlarged Fox.

==Overview:==
When the Avalon-class project started to run into delay after delay, the
Federated Suns Navy began to look for a stopgap measure when the available
Fox-class corvette was being out-gunned by larger and newer designs.   While
the new project was given a green light to go forward as quickly as possible, it
was demanded that the new design was to use as many design elements from
the Fox as possible in order to keep design costs down and help speed up the
time to bring the new vessel to completion.
The engineers at Federated-Boeing were mostly faithful to this requirement,
though they did apply the lessons learned from the Fox-class.   The naval
architects with the Navy fought the engineers on almost every change, and for
the most part were able to keep the project on time and budget.   The biggest
change the engineers were able to apply to the new vessel was in terms of the
crew accomodations.   The accomodations on the new design, designated the
Lancer-class, were much better designed in terms of the crew, with enough
binks for all and enough supplies for an extended 180-day deployment between
needing to resupply.   The Lancer makes use of the same thruster system as the
Fox-class, but manages to pack more of them together.   While not much faster,
the Lancer is well able to keep up with larger vessels while acting as a
command vessel for the more numerous corvettes.
The engineers were also able to improve the firepower of the Benson, mainly
by increasing the caliber of the naval autocannons and the supply of the
autocannon ammunition..   The anti-fighter firepower was likewise expanded,
especially along the broadsides of the vessel.   The new vessel also carries
sufficient banks of double heat-sinks to vent all of the waste-heat generated
by firing all of the vessel's weapons at the same time.

That's a pretty reasonable Fox++ destroyer design. A bit up-gunned compared to the Fox(244 damage of capital weapons vs 156), a bit faster, and a fair bit more survivable. The weapons have a bit less similarity to the Fox than you imply - most notably, I think -T missiles use different launchers than standard missiles, so that's really a new Barracuda - but that's fairly minor. Seems very viable as a Davion design.
