Marlin Attack Sub
« on: 03 March 2016, 07:38:12 »
The Marlin Attack Sub is Carrion Combat Industries first forray into submersible combat.  This little underwater predator is intended to keep the clients waters clear of any undersea threats and make their waters too dangerous to tread.

The Marlin's primary doctrine is to simply stay at range and poke small holes into the enemy until water starts flooding in. Packing sensor baffling stealth armour and enough speed to outstrip all but the fastest of attack subs the Marlin generally keeps itself at long range from it's targets and uses multiple small clusters of LRT to strip away armour and seek a hull breach while return fire is generally ineffective.  The biggest danger for the Marlin are faster subs closing into close range where the Marlin does not have an effective response but it is always recommended that Marlins swim in pods of at least 2 and preferably 4  so that any vessel that closes with one Marlin is in ideal combat range of 3 others and quickly sunk.

Marlins are built for long period submerssion, the 3 man crew is treated to a, rather cramped, personnel compartment allowing them to sleep, wash and stretch and a modest cargo bay allows sufficient supplies for days of continuous operation without resupply - although the ammunition will only last 1 or 2 engagements - so generally Marlins will be found roaming the waters around a base of operations seeking targets of opportunity so that they can return home after each battle.

Edited to change compartment to bay

It seems to me that the mission profile is incompatible with the presence of an infantry compartment.

I believe you were thinking of an infantry bay.

Other than that minor quip, I like the design!

Gah, I always get those 2 confused.

*Breathes Deeply* not going to break into a rant about how we can go from 5T for 28 people sleeping quarters to 5T for 1 person sleeping quarters with nothing in between - it's just a bed and a toilet...

It's more than that: the 5T of steerage ties into life support systems for long-term habitation. the infantry bay does not; it just provides cots, a head or two and some plugs and fawcets; this is reflected by their increased drain on consumables.

Think of it as the difference between premium "sleeper" first class and tourist class in modern airlines... it's not 100% accurate, but it gives the right idea.

Note the way that the 5T infantry bay is only 2 tons more than an infantry compartment for the same number of troopers... and the compartment is basically a box with seats.

Yeah, I know, but bluewater ships don't need the same level of life support - especially surface ships, so surely their consumables should be easier (no air requirements, water desalination etc.) even a sub can refill air by surfacing - I don't mind too much fluffing it a bit, like just giving crew more bay space then they really need without reducing consumables but it's a really big jump from 6 men per ton to 5 tons per man - where's the 1 ton per man option?

It's not really needed; the consumption rate of consumables basically covers it. At these small quantities for such short durations, it's not even much of an issue.

They don't need to surface to get air... with a fusion reactor, electrolysis will give you all the oxygen you need.  Pumping CO2 overboard isn't hard.
