Delvin Stone Needs Submarines
« on: 16 July 2019, 07:36:54 »
The proliferation of large WoB missile and base submarines (Akula missile subs, and Wyrm base-submarines) has lead Delvin Stone to the conclusion that he needs submarines capable of hunting down and destroying these larger beasts on a budget.  To that end, Delvin has ordered the development of a 'large torpedo', to be launched from modified Sub-capital missile tubes.  These torpedoes will use fusion powerplants rather than solid-rocket supercavitation, enabling them to be steered to the target, and giving them a very long range.  However, they will also have to be armored to resist anti-torpedo protection systems, restricting both warhead mass and top speed.  But you don't have to worry too much about the weapons-systems.  Just give us something that can carry it.  And build it quickly.

It is required that:
  • The submarine have a maximum submerged displacement of 8500 tons.
  • The submarine have at least 2 modified torpedo tubes, and at least 15 shots per tube.
  • The submarine must mount very large sonar systems to detect it's targets. (some kind of communications/sensor equipment required that can reasonably be used to attack targets on another mapsheet.)
  • The submarine must have at least 1 light vehicle bay to carry a decoy submarine.

Can I interest you in a modified Imagineer Battlegroup?  The first ship went into production 3 years ago so it's pretty much state of the art.

It's an 8,500T submersible carrier with 40 LRT tubes, 2 Piranha Tubes with 40 missiles (currently vertically launched but these could be modified for sub-cap torpedoes) a last chance AAA turret sporting 4 LB-2X and a full air company, naval company and BA company.  The combat vehicles carried can easily be changed out and if the Imagineer is to be deployed in a primarily sub-hunting role then the other combat vehicles could all be switched out for Marlin Blue Water Superiority Submersibles.  We'd recommend keeping the helipad and ASF bays as aircraft can provide excellent sub-hunting capabilities if they are reasonably close to the surface.

As the Akula is notoriously fast an up-engined version of the Marlin could easily be designed to be able to run it down.

New Marlin MK II attack sub with up-rated engine to allow it to close and destroy Akula missile subs

https://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php?topic=66065.0

I would recommend each imagineer be deployed with the following payload for sub-hunting
24x Marlin II attack subs (12 in the wet bay and 12 deployed or in cargo) - the main sub hunting force
6x Monsoon Naval Fighters (in the ASF bays) - with plenty of torpedo bombs
2x Nessie Logistics WIGE - for resupply
8x Slick omni-VTOL - Still very useful, including air recon, search and rescue and sub killer configurations
4x Cutters - capable multi-role hydrofoils
No reason not to take the industrial mechs and battle armour marines though they can be left behind to increase deployment duration between resupply

Other vehicles can be made available and can be expedited to an Imagineer in the field using the Nessie Logistics WIGE's vehicle bays

Well, I don't know about the name of the Imagineer, and I had a more 'attack sub' idea in mind rather than 'submerged carrier' because we can just build normal escort carriers and airbases but I guess it will have to do.
