Bathroom Spraying is what I need to do in the months of October-March/April here in Vancouver.

Too cold/wet to spray outside

My wife wants to retire in the Caribbean. I don't think dry days ever happen down there...

I get it. I don't like the smell when it's concentrated, but sometimes getting a faint whiff of spraypaint or glue can be somewhat comforting, especially during busy times when I haven't been able to minis for a while.

Do any of you guys make your own decals? For a while, the local Walmart actually carried a decal making kit by Testors. It had small decal sheets, a small spray can of clear paint and a disc with software to print out the sheets.
Amazon sells decal sheets, both clear and white, and I use canned Krylon clear paint to seal the ink. It takes a while to test which designs work best, with white backed decals having better colors but it worked well with limited runs of insignia not available anywhere else.

Yes

Clear decal sheets are great for Dark Colors on light mechs.

White Decal sheets is better for lighter colors, and if it incorporates white.

Another trick I have done is to use a white sheet with a huge border of a similar color so I can paint over the outside of the image.

I've been doing so, for decals I can't get legitimately.

Okay, FINALLY sealed my first 5 mech group: my Sword of Light Lance.  How do I know if it worked or if the weather conditions (79 degrees F and 50% humidity) were OK?

You're not absolutely certain it *didn't* work, so the answer it that it worked.

A bad sealing job isn't a subtle failure. You'll know.

Gotcha.  Do you all find two light coats is about right or is one light coat enough?

Inkjet or laser?  1-2 coats for laser, 2-3 coats for inkjet. But I'm paranoid about bleeding with inkjet.  Had several bleeders before.

Well, I ended up doing two light coats of the Krylon spray on sealer.  The big thing I notice is the minis are no longer 'sticky' to the touch and definitely have a flatter, less 'sheen-y' appearance.  They don't look any worse (not that I did any favors there on these first five minis with my painting) so I think the sealing was successful.

Is this a permanent thing, or do they need a spray in a few years to stay in good shape?

Thanks for all the advice with decals and sealers.  New hobbies have lots of information to take in at once.

Cheers,

Mad

It should be permanent, though if you game with your minis on a regular basis, it might be a good idea to respray after a while because it will inevitably wear off wherever the mini gets picked up.

Gloss coat the mini first.  It's a thicker lacquer that will protect the mini, then follow up with the dullcotes.
