New Avalon & Mjolnir Marine complement composition
« on: 07 June 2024, 08:05:57 »
Is there any indication of what design (or designs?) either the FedCom, AFFC or LAAF deployed to their Avalons? Would they likely be the same as we see in the Overlord-A3?

Similarly for the Mjolnir, which rolled out at a time when the LAAF was curtailing spending on Battle Armour?

Finally, any indication why they would deploy Battle Armour to such spacious vessels, rather than normal marines?

Probably just IS Standard or Gray Death Scout if they even deployed armored marines. I think most probably just used the Marine Combat Suit if anything

Avalons have 64 BA troopers, while Mjolnirs have 40. For some perspective, the Feng Huang has 96, the Thera a monstrous 100 and the Tatsumak an astounding 108. Avalons were likely carrying RCT troopers in addition to their own compliment so there is that. As for the specific suits, Cavaliers and modified IS standard would also be my guess. Infiltrator IIs could work, but really would not fit the needs of the ships. (The Infiltrator Marine is a recent variant)

I tend to be a proponent of just using space marines.

Excellent point on the Gray Death line.

IS-Standard for the LC,  IS-Standard & the Cavalier for the FS.

CAN you use others?  Sure, but, stuff like the Infiltrator & GDL suits have much better uses than being a Marine.

Basic Marines would use that, but Battle Armor should be in some kind of BA & given the Era.  ISS seems most likely to me.

An RCT carries a minimum of 5X the BA that a single Avalon does, so I doubt you see RCT troopers in those bays.
I would think the Avalon has it's own compliment just for defending the ship that won't ever be deployed to the ground.
RCT BA is likely in basic Foot Bays of some other DS w/ BA Suits themselves taking up Cargo Tonnage.

We really need an ISS-Marine variant in canon, or, even better, a dedicated "Light-BA" suit that is purely for Marine Deployment.

The truth is I don't think we know what was actually used (meaning canon sources). So you just gotta look at what's available to the faction and era and go from there.

There was a great discussion a while back on what constituted the best BA marines in terms of gameplay rules. Not quite what you asked for, but I found it really helpful.

Gray Death Standard seems like an excellent choice for the Mjolnir. You can't jump if you're fighting your way through the inside of a ship, so the GDS having a high ground speed would give it an edge, plus it has an AP mount without giving up its primary gun.

I completely agree w/ you.

That said, I would point out what was pointed out to me, in that, having JJs is VERY useful when your doing things like navigating OUTSIDE the ship.
