Title: Looking for a regiment
Post by: GermanSumo on 15 November 2019, 06:24:48
 ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

so i used the kickstarter to restart my mini-collection. if i counted correctly, i will have 118 mechs sent to me in wave 2. the only other thing aside the star colonel content i choose with the pledge manager were two additional faction coins and dice.

so now im looking at around 60 clan mech and around 60 star league, normal inner sphere and 2 legend designs. plus of course the chosen one: the urbie!

the 3 faction coins and dice i ordered are blood spirits, draconis combine and comstar.

now i am looking at the whole pile of incoming mechs and wonder how to deploy them or spread them into 3 factions (also for the camos). i want my choices to actually make sense canon wise.

as i choose blood spirits and not necessarily front line, i can use some star league designs and some omnis and some "normal" designs.

for my drac part of the forces i need/want an experienced unit from the clan front with lotsa loot. the units i am eyeing are the Second Sword of Light (my most favourite unit in the universe) or the 3rd Proserpina Hussars.

i totally have NO idea about the comstar units and fluff. sadly. because they mostly sport numbers and the level-shit, i never understood how to distinguish them. i do not want to play the invader galaxy or some other super highlighted unit though.

now i have the issues. do i divide the minis into 3 units? or go with a well fleshed out second line blood spirit trinary and 2 battallions of kuritan stock? are there any other regiments you could advise me other than the sword of light or the proserpina hussars?

please... there is no right or wrong answer for this. i am just looking for input/suggestions/thoughts. especially which units would fit the frame i set up for myself. just help me out, guys.

If you want to learn more about the Com Guards, I highly recommend getting the PDF of Field Manual: Comstar, it's a valuable resource for learning about the various Divisions, what they've done, who they've fought, etc. It alsoexplains the whole number-letter system they've got, it turns out there's actually a method to that madness.

You mentioned interest in the Draconis Combine, would you like a list of armies and divisions that are normally stationed in Combine space? Or ones that fought a particular Clan on Tukayyid?

im mostly looking for unit suggestions. units of the combine and com star which fought the clans and came away with a lot of loot from it. to justify clan mechs in their ranks. i found the 3rd proserpina hussars who were rebuild with lots of clan loot in the second half of the 2050s. maybe there are some com star units who fit this description? or somebody has additional information on a blood spirit galaxy?

for comstar, look at who participated on tukayyid (and wasn't wiped out).

My 3050s/60s goto for CG forces is the 3rd Army. They faced off against the falcons on tukayyid and also were involved with Bulldog and Serpent

With ComStar you can get some great division nicknames after they ran into the Clans.  The 1st through the 6th Armies were used into the Jihad, 7th and higher were disbanded to replace losses.  The 2nd, 4th and 6th Armies fought multiple Clans . . . some of my favorite division names- the White Monsters (77th), Gentle Persuasion (90th), Steel Snake Charmers (79th), Przeno River Rats (403rd), Wolf Bait (366th), Jaguar Skinners (467th), and the Battered Wolf Warriors (76th).

What I would suggest?

Paint up some of your doubles or generic mechs in a woodland camo so you have the option of dropping them in without having a jarring visual difference.  For example, I have Timber Wolves in different faction schemes- to include different configs- but still have a Timber Wolf Prime in woodland camo.

Since Comstar gave a whole buttload of Star League 'Mechs to the Combine prior to the War of '39, all the 'Mechs from both level IIs can be painted in Combine colors.

So screw Comstar! Paint all the Inner Sphere 'Mechs in Combine colors, and all the Clanners as Sprits.

A Ryuken regiment would be a good choice.  They saw plenty of combat against the Clans (IIRC, it’s been a while since I looked at any detailed breakdowns of the Invasion or Bulldog), and have the skills to put the tech to good use.

Suggestion #1

I would head over to Camospecs.com & check out the various faction paint jobs over there.

Suggestion #2

Don't paint up more than a Company/Trinary/Binary in any single paint scheme.
With 60 mechs give yourself the chance to explore some of the many schemes a single faction has & do up 5 different companies.   (1 CS, 1-3 DC, 1+ FS/LC for OpFor)

Also some nice generic camo works well to mix things up.

For example I'm a FC fan but I still have DC lances of Sword of Light, Ryuken, SZAC, & Dieron Regulars for use as OpFor because I don't want to paint my Dragons/Panthers up in ally colors.

That’s a lot of mechs!

Clans: The most I’d paint up for any one clan is a front-line trinary, a second-line trinary, and any number of Elementals.

Some of the more prestigious garrison forces, like the Diamond Sharks’ Spina galaxies or their Omega galaxy, had omnimech command stars so you could do a 5/10 omni/second-line mix.  The less prestigious ones, like a lot of provisional garrison clusters or solahma units, would mix in SLDF or salvaged IS mechs instead.  The Diamond Sharks’ Omega galaxy had a great story at Tukayyid, so I’m doing a trinary with a few omnis in the command star.  Might swap the Crossbow with the Hunchback IIC because the former was often used in second-line units and the latter sometimes in frontline units – and there aren’t any heavies in the second-line packs (why not??).

A Smoke Jaguar force defending Huntress would be very cool, too.  No shortage of canonical opponents!  That’d also be the most lore-friendly way to use the Stone Rhino.  But then you’d be painting up mechs for two dead clans, and that feels a little limiting.  It might make more sense to pick one dead clan (sounds like Blood Spirits for you) and one of the three prominent invader clans that stick around for a long time without totally changing their color schemes (i.e. not Diamond Shark/Sea Fox).  Or the Blood Spirits’ opponents.  Tough call.  The Blood Spirits seem difficult to use.

Inner Sphere:

Using something like Operation Bulldog as a filter is a possibility.  Imagine showing off several dozen mechs and pointing out that they all fought together in a single operation.

If you have a favorite invading clan, find the Comstar divisions that faced them on Tukayyid, in the Tukayyid sourcebook, and then find out on Sarna which of those did the most fighting afterward.  I’m going with the 85th Div. (8th army) because they fought the Diamond Sharks and then participated in Operation Bulldog.  They all use an all-white parade scheme, so unless you’re getting unit decals it doesn’t really matter.

Or give them to a high-end Combine unit (e.g. that 2nd Sword of Light unit you’re considering), or to a low-end clan unit, or just divide them up as rare SLDF remainders in random armies.  The Sword of Light is a great choice because they got a lot of the fancier Comstar mechs and they’ll take fewer steps to paint.  Red’s harder to paint than cool colors (easier than yellow or white, though), but you don’t have to paint blocks of other colors, just details.  With so many mechs to work on, that’ll matter.

I like the Legion of Vega, too.  They were at Luthien and in Operation Bulldog.

The Blood Spirits fought the Genyosha at some point, but they’ve got an awfully dull color scheme.
