NFL 2023-2024: Hail to the Chefs... great googly moogly

New league year has begun, the rest of the seven-layer dip is gone, time to get things going for the next season of zaniness and inanity.

So. Chiefs won it, Eagles made a great show of it (their defense needs to look in the mirror about that second half...), Tom Brady is finished, Aaron Rodgers is begging for attention, and Nathaniel Hackett is still holding on to a couple of timeouts just in case.

Let's do this thing, people. NFL 2023-24.

It will be interesting to see what Seattle can do with all their picks this upcoming draft and with Russ and Wagner off their cap they might even be able to make a few moves.

Hmmmm...

I mean the guy is actually a better QB than he seems to get credit for but Seattle already has Geno and I think they are going to try and make more of an effort to find out if Drew Locke is worth anything.  Plus I see them going for a QB in the draft rather than free agency if they decide Geno is not the future(he probably isn't).

There's been cases made for him to go to the Panthers, Saints, and even Jets though.  I can see any of those being reasonably likely as he seems to be an upgrade over what they have there.

So yeah, how long before Rodgers retires?  Any bets?

...hopefully it throws a general manager long enough for a bank error. I have a Mercenaries Kickstarter to fund.  >:D

It would be best if they wait until you are in the building and the GM just stares at you then looks at the scout, "This guy is a safety?"

I actually got asked twice by my high school football coach to play tight end, but since it would have meant leaving hockey... nope. Never even considered it.

Bears ‘making moves’ in terms of draft trades.

I put it in quotes cause they’ll find a way to [forum redacted] it up.

I'll go the other direction- absolutely impressed with what the Bears did here. They're committed to Justin Fields, clearly- so no need to draft a QB early (with some rather good ones available, mind you!). So, if the players you want are going to be lower in the draft rankings anyway, why not trade down and see who you can fleece? Carolina definitely needs a new QB (safe to say the Baker Mayfield experiment is over? ;) ), and were willing to throw a wheelbarrow of goodies back for that pick- cool. Even if every pick comes up bust (and I'm betting against THAT), they got a fantastic WR for Fields to work with. Very good move for Chicago- and let's not forget that it was the late-game antics of Lovie Smith that awarded them this opportunity to begin with, which just makes me smile.

There's no sue things in the NFL draft, I admit. Want proof? This is the third time this century the first pick has been traded prior to the draft. The resulting players were Michael Vick (say what you will about him off the field, but he was a game-changing player), and Jared Goff (say what you... you know what, he's Jared Goff.) This could go pear-shaped for the Bears, who knows? But they're swinging for the fences for now, and I love it.

Fair. Let me ask you this then.

What should the Bears have done, then? First overall pick, what should they have done with that pick?

To me, the options are:

1) Draft a QB. This essentially says that the Justin Fields experiment is a failure and they're starting over- even if it's not meant that way, it's how it would come across to any observer, Fields included.

2) Draft at a different position. QBs are the meat of this draft, and any other position player is probably not going until after the top... call it five? In which case, using the #1 pick to take a #6 player means you could have traded down and gotten  more out of that pick, and didn't.

3) Trade down, let someone else grab the QB you didn't want/need anyway, reap the rewards of their insistence.

I don't know what the Bears' draft will look like, and I doubt even after the draft ends we'll have a real picture of how well they did for a few years, until those players have had enough time to sink or swim. But based on what they got out of this, as of today at least, this looks like an absolute win for them- possibly for the Panthers as well, depending on how well they do at developing their next QB (Stroud?).

I think this is a great trade for the Bears. The receivers in this class appear weaker than last year and with the focus needed to be on evaluating Fields, Moore should give him a capable WR to do that. Strengthen the line and while the offense may not be a top-10, it should be capable to see if Fields is the future or he's just the latest version of Tim Tebow.

Next year, they have 2 number ones. If Fields works out, great, they can add two premium players. If not, they can start the QB cycle over again and their rookie won't be crippled by a bare-cupboard offense.

My comment was more towards being optimistic rather than anything they should have done differently.

I don’t know enough about draft calculus to say one way or another.
But I know enough about the Bears that they will make the wrong choice nearly every single time, and never to actually get excited about the things they do.
