First Spectre Done - AWS-8Q Awesome
« on: 30 June 2020, 19:31:25 »
First of my Spectres complete.

It was also my first time 3dprinting and adding little weapon and explosion effects... I'm very happy how they turned out. If you have any suggestions or critiques please let me know!

I'm still working on the backstory, but something to the effect of they never paint their mechs (so the scratched up factory primer) and only have faded skulls and crossbones for insignia. Probably some type of ROM front. (3050 era)

Very nice! And your rust work inspires me, I'd just decided to to a unit with poorly maintained battle salvage, so hints please!

Thanks!

My method was:

Prime with rust color surface primer (airbrush)
Spray cheap hairspray (not too heavy)
Let dry
Airbrush base coat and highlights (thin coats until coverage)
Wet surface and allow water to saturate down until hairspray layer, then use toothpick and brush to chip
Gloss varnish
A variety of dark grey, black and rust oil washes and streaks (using white spirits to make streaks and control where it goes)
Gloss varnish
Decals
Matte varnish
Light drybrush
Additional washes where needed for more contrast.

Hope that helps, please let me know if you have any other questions!

Does the hairspray keep the basecoat from bonding properly to the primer so its easier to chip down to the rust?

Exactly, it is water soluble, so once the water penetrates the thin coat above it, it can be scratched off in convincing "random" patterns with a brush or toothpick.

Will any cheap hairspray work, or is there something to look for on the can?

Cheaper the better... And do like one or two thin coats. Try to avoid it beading, and avoid the hair spray that's the pump bottle
