You also want classic 'Mechs that look like someone else's intellectual property. I can't help but recall how THAT worked out...

-

LOL true, and while I don't think Chuck Lorre would sue you guys on that, I completely understand the tenuous position it would put you guys in.

Perhaps a play on the name would be best here as stated above, Wheaton's Crushers would be good too, just make sure the CO is named Wil Wheaton! (or add an L to the first name to avoid any other possible lawsuits lol)

May I suggest "The Will Crushers" would be a good name for a military unit.

Wheaton's Crushers sounds like a breakfast smoothie with museli in it.

Tell him if I do this, it will require a mention on The Wil Wheaton Project.  (And yes, I will do this.)

You thinking what I'm thinking? This could work.

I wonder if Alpha Strike is fast enough for Tabletop. I sorta doubt regular BattleTech would be fast-paced enough to play well but Alpha Strike might.

It could be. Problem I see is if it does go onto Table Top, the Intro Box set needs to be in production and be available more readily.  So far, aside from one or two games, most of the games on Table Top can be purchased easily through retail. Like Target.

If it sees the light of day, the new version of the Succession Wars board game seems like a more likely candidate.

I'm pretty sure the idea of doing BT on TableTop has been discussed on the forums before, but that show is geared to a pretty particular type of traditional board game, not a wargame like BT or WarMachine or 40K.

IIRC, somewhere on their site, Wil does a vlog where he discusses the types of games that "work" on the show, and how even some complex but great games like Twilight Imperium don't work for the format.

Not to be a wet blanket here, but while HE would be honored, I wonder if someone with an army of lawyers and a trademark on the name would have a problem with it.

Can you afford the lawyer(s) to argue that in court, for however long the supposed owners cared to keep it up?  Would it be a good use of your money to do so?
I'd rather have more BattleTech product than pay for lawyers to take on large corporations defending their IP.

Parody is good if we're doing it as a one-shot. As I understand it, making an ongoing thing--say, someone wanted stories about the adventures of the Wesley Crushers on BattleCorps or spread across a series of sourcebooks (incidentally, in BT nomenclature traditions, that would imply there's a planet named Wesley; since there's not, a "Wesley's Crushers" would be more appropriate, as we'd only need a CO with the name of Wesley instead)--would then mean we're piggybacking our profitability on someone else's IP. That's where the no-no begins, and why thinks like the Fighting Urukhai, Team Banzai, and Wylie's Coyotes had to go.

And, these days, BT is a bit lawyer-shy; why tempt fate when you don't need to?

I still say Wylie's Coyotes was a group sent by Clan Coyote to monitor the Dragoons.
I always wanted to run a one-shot where Wylie's Coyotes contract out to ComStar or Brion's Legion to garrison Terra, only to then claim Terra for Clan Coyote, the IlClan after touching down.

Maybe make a single throwaway reference to them, without any real details - then invite Mr. Wheaton to partake the Battletech boards and write up his own entry for the Non Canon Units thread?  That way we get the official mention, and he can have all the fun he wants detailing it UNOFFICIALLY in a way that we can all enjoy and not get Catalyst in trouble.

Mr. Wheaton has no rights to the "Wesley Crusher" IP.

I've done some work in IP and here's the thing. 99 percent of the time a throwaway reference won't get you in any trouble.

1 percent of the time, it gets you into deep, expensive trouble because you've got to pay for a lawyer to represent you if someone say decides to sue, even if they have absolutely no standing.

A good IP attorney can often run hundreds (In some cases say 750/hour) without including things like paying for his help, research, court fees, etc, etc.

In other words, even a completely baseless suit could just about wipe out  a years worth of profit, by its lonesome.  not a good risk.

Well, going with hybrid of his actual name and reference to his character maybe better.  Like Will's Crushers or something.

Origins starts today or tomorrow?  I'm excited to hear what people get to pickup there since i'm little too broke to attend!  More crack aka new Battletech stuff please!

That was more a question of "would that be allowable" rather than a direct suggestion, especially since (from the posts above) he hasn't played in quite a long time.  You know what you're doing, I trust you know what you're doing, I just don't know what I'm doing...do you trust me?
