Cause of The Blackout
« on: 23 May 2014, 14:59:38 »
Hello, all.

I am returning to Battletech after many years by way of the RPG, I have been loking over the changes of the last (mumble mumble) years and I plan to run a "Dark Age" campaign. I am wondering though, if any fiction or sourcebooks have ever gone into exactly what caused the HPGs to go offline, and if so which works those would be.

Thanks.

The cause of the blackout is still a mystery. Field Manual 3145 is a good source of the most current plot threads in the Dark Age (what happened to Delvin Stone, Wolf Empire, etc).

I've heard that they want to fast forward to the 3200s already.  Is this true? I was really enjoying their take on the Dark Age.  I'd like to swim around in this era a bit. :/
The Clans can be beaten. On the tabletop, anyway.  (Posted as Rush Maguin on the MWO forums)

Apparently, many fans feel this way. Which may or may not be the reason for Herb to state, after steppimg down as Line Developer, that the 3250 era was (paraphrased) postponed indefinitely for now, and might not happen at all.

The Dark Age era seems to be coming to a close, the various supplements have been published. Unless something has changed the next major epoch will be the ilClan era. Then after the ilClan era the time line was supposed to jump a large period of time to give Catalyst a clean slate on their universe. As Frabby said it is not clear if it is still happening.

Maybe the next source book will shed some new light on the subject.  However, some mysteries will properly need to remain.  You have keep people trying solve them.  Its what makes thing more interesting.

Indeed, the fan speculation and conspiracy theories, on Gray Monday are pretty entertaining. I am not sure the actual party behind it can be as rewarding for the umpteen years of buildup.

I think Grey Monday and the Black Out is just a plot device a catalyst to get things moving through paranoia and opportunism . So ultimately it does not matter since the opportunists who get huge milage out of it's existence ultimately will not care and the victims tend to lose so much they cannot afford to go after the people responsible so the point will likely be moot .

The Dark Age era was started by Wizkids as they wanted a clean slate to start from when the original BattleTech game died.

Without knowing who caused Grey Monday it does leave an interesting plot point for the GM to fill in. There are a lot of factions in the Inner Sphere who stand to gain from these events. It is a fun time for conspiracies and intrigue.

Personally, i think someone tripped over the electrical/communication cable somewhere and it caused domino effect to accrue. People responsible are too embarrassed to admit how it happened.

It would be funny if after all the theories and mystery it turns out that a tech somwhere forgot to update norton and visted the wrong porn site.

I don't think that's going to be the case. Primarily because if it were, porn would be everywhere. Everywhere! EVERYWHERE PORN!

That would be awesome!!

Might explain ComStar's temper tantrum too

I guess I must be in the minority here... I understand the storytelling value of some of these mysteries, but they have generated so many and resolved so few that it was so frustrating that it was one of the reasons I gave up the game.  SOME answers once in a while would be nice.
