Fusil Combat Dropship.
« on: 20 December 2024, 03:37:46 »
The Fusil is an attempt to take advantage of one of the biggest issues for capital weapons. The 500 ton targeting penalty. Even the subcaps have a lower penalty but they still have one. This would render any non laser cap or subcap effectively worth far less than it would for a heavier dropship. This design is also tech limited as much as possible.

Fusil Combat Dropship- A 490 ton dropship just squeaking  in under the 500 ton limit. Its small size means that reasonably the ship should be carriable  internally rather than spending drop collars on it. The design has 7/11 MP. This dropship mounts 8 AC-20 in a single nose bay. Combined with the fact that it will be going fast to limit chance of enemy hitting it this means high closing speed engagement giving it an effective 64 CAP damage bay matching a full HNPPC bay. Fairly cheap at about 140 Mil C-Bills each.

This looks like a good S-boat.  Small, fast, and limited to near planets akin to coastal waters like the S-Boat.

I agree you wouldn't want to spend jump ships transporting these, limiting them to in system attack/defense roles not multi lightyear invasions.

This concept is interesting, but I generally prefer the small craft version of this (example here).  It's 1/10th the price, 1/5th the firepower, and same armor.  So if we look at sqrt(armor * offense) as combat capability, the small craft is about 45% of the combat capability, or perhaps 35% at super high speed engagements.  Either way, it's a factor of 2-3 more cost efficient power.  And, as an upside it's more transportable.

There is one advantage though which could be substantial in some cases: large craft sensors are far superior to small craft sensors.

Which argues for a few Large Craft supported by hordes of Small Craft.  Kind of a "Battlestar" approach... ;)
