I really thought "pocket-Heavy 'Mechs that do the same thing but worse and cheaper" was the accepted definition of "trooper 'Mechs."
LOL, I actually kinda like that as a definition.
by that definition, the Combine's is totally the DRG-1N Dragon. it's just in the low end of the actual heavy category because of their dislike of actual mediums.

As of puberty, the average human ovary contains on the order of 300,000 ova, decreasing by about 1,000 per month after that. . So not so much a problem.

I remember reading something about this a long while ago, that, for all the cool sci-fi stuff out there.   "Lasers"  "Plasma/Electricity" etc etc.

The simple basic bullet/cannon shell (in a barrel) is incredibly hard to beat when it comes to firepower in a small cheap package.

energy density and accessibility has something to do with that.  it's like why it's so hard to make an electric car with gasoline equivalent load/speed/range.  The power sources with enough energy density are hard to store or hard to tap, the power sources with the accessibility are less energy dense or have the wrong sort of release curve to be used as power sources.

I think I read the same article you did, though I might have missed it for a different article.  :(

The problem in the small arms arena, is needing that energy density, and energy release, and portability and ability to be stored and transported.

without becoming a grenade.

With caseless ammo, the 'without becoming a grenade' is right up there with 'not leaving explosive dust behind in your magazine pouch' and 'able to not explode if x common thing happens to you that happens to infantrymen worldwide peace or war'.

while still being reliable as ammunition.

The G-11 got 'close enough' with their special propellant (which, iirc, is still classified nine ways to sunday) and the configuration (Primer provides the initial impetus to the bullet, the rest of the material combusts in a chamber formed by the ammunition's propellant itself), but one downside that's been documented is keeping the gun cool (funny thing, when your rifle ejects a cartridge after firing, a lot of residual heat goes with it).

Notably, upon reunification, the Bundeswehr canceled the orders, which is why the G-36 (an AR-18 update if I ever saw one) exists.

Shrapnel 18 had a write up about longevity treatments in the Inner Sphere.  While they're still not up to Terra's standards, people in most of the Inner Sphere in the 3150s enjoy an extended lifespan and women stay fertile longer.  As long as they remember to stop taking certain longevity drugs during pregnancy.

How did they get around the basic mammal problem though? (*human women are born with all the ova they're going to get, hence why they become infertile while human males can keep siring well past their seventies)  I know, it's kind of a sidebar, but that one's a hard physical limit based on mammalian physiology and structure.

All it was was Captain Stick Upbutt Varney of the AFFS Clerical Division of the Department of Pretentious Services.  If you submit the correction to the error by filling out all 47 forms in triplicate each individually stamped, notarized, and initialed by your next 3 higher superiors, you will be allowed to attend a week long seminar on the importance of grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure.  This attendance and full participation will allow you to have only one blackmark added to your record.  Second offenses will lead to longer and more detailed seminars to attend.
