7.5 Megaton Challenge

You are given the ability to create a small fleet/battlegroup/whatever of war/jump/drop/whatever ships.

It will be used for many different purposes, from planetary defense, to exploration, to fleet on fleet combat duty, to invasions.

Only one rules

1. You must be able to jump all of it. You can't just have a bunch of dropships (That is, not ONLY dropships), and you certainly can't have monitors.

My Lyran AU navy according to the Schlachtgruppen-Doctrine:
Some designs are from after the liberation of Sudeten and Pandora, some of them before, thus the difference in tech level concerning secondary aramament (even though with the RACs on the Monarch you would have to imagine some trade agreement with the Foxes). Rest is all IS tech.

2xArchon-class Battleship (1.750.000 t) with hull defense tanks, each carries 1xMonarch [NC³] (5k t)
1xJormungand-class Jumpship (385k t), carries 2xKriegswalküre [PWS], 1xKriegswalküre [ASF] carrying 144 Eisensturm II ASF (95t each even though they are already accounted for with the carrier), 1xWalküre [Cargo]
--> all jumpers are LFB-equipped
--> 4.091.000 tons

Doesn't need more tonnage to work as intended, which is being a quick and cost efficient response force that would be able to brutally beat anything warship-like to debris with ease.
Archons and Kriegswalküren stay back and spit thunder, while the ASFs and Monarchs are closing in.

And here are my entries, they shouldn't be surprising. 7.5 Million tons is of course the weight of a 2.5 million ton ship + 50 100k dropships in collars.

Here's the big one itself.

Arguably, it's inefficient. Barely more armor than the 1.75 million ton warship above me, but I think this one makes up for it. It has the same 540 damage nose arrays the smaller ship, but instead of Gauss, it's HNPPCs. That means no ammo worries. And, coincidentally, 4 HNPPCs is the PERFECT number for those bracketing fire bonuses.  ;)

Adding to that devastating punch is a broadside of another 264 capital damage from HNPPCs, and an aft 262 damage of HNPPCs and a MNPPC.

What's interesting though is the other weaponry. Over 400 AMS cover the ships right and left and fore and aft arcs, giving 360 degree coverage of 100 AMS per arc. This is coupled with 20 screen launchers to provide additional defense.

Strangely, due to the arc layout, directly in front and behind the ship lies a blank spot in AMS and Screen coverage. A piddly 2 Laser AMS and 1 screen launcher in the nose, and 1 Laser AMS and 1 screen launcher in the rear cover those areas. However, directly broadside is a doubling of AMS coverage, where any missile would be forced to face 200 AMS at once.

To combat Aerospace, 8 SC/L-1s and 4 SC/L-3s cover each of the 4 side arcs. This armament was chosen over an armament of a more simple 100 ERPPCs due to it's much longer range and accuracy, and lower fire control weight, in comparison. The lasers can also be effective against any warships that find themselves coming too close to the behemoth, which was ultimately what lead to their placement.

18 ASF and 18 small craft provide bare minimum defense, but the bulk of the forces are carried by the attached dropships.

An advanced electronics package of Naval C3 and a large Naval Comm Scanner help establish superiority in the detection and accuracy department.

The MkV Corvette serves as a corvette and destroyer hunter, which is a role it's Sub-Capital Lasers do well, quickly tearing through the generally light armor of such ships.

Additionally, quite a large amount of cargo is carried, in total, the fleet carries just over 900 kilotons in equipment. This allows for immense amount of travel without need for resupply.

The Mk VI-C trades some of the Sub-Capital Lasers on the MkV for a much larger ASF compliment. Taken as a whole, the battle group can carry over 2,700 ASF to assure strikecraft superiority, and missile defense safety.

Both types of dropships also employ Naval C3 and Large Naval-Comm Scanners. In addition, while still relatively light compared to much larger warships, they carry respectable armor for their weight.

Good thing though. IMO it is a tactical advantage to have that sledgehammer in the nose that no canon warship would have an answer to, neither in armament, nor in armor.

I allowed myself to add in another 250k tons for the Archon battleship and streamline things a little more.
Fully IS tech now as well. Without the want to sound cocky or anything, but in pure ship to ship combat, it would literally eat Leviathans.

And even the many Leviathans ASFs would have some issues with the 12 Hull Defense tanks and the well... 80 (!) Piranha launchers.
No more AMS, no more nukes, but I usually rather avoid the doubled Fire Control tons and go for all armor, all firepower as a true battleship should.
Besides that the broadside can now also reach out to extreme range due to the added heavy N-Gauss. Same applies for the rear. And the bow has received another heavy N-Gauss for 570 points of capital scale damage over extreme range.
I think this is as good as it gets in terms of ship-to-ship brutality for your C-Bill (I'm too lazy to calculate it again after Strat Ops, but since the 1.750.000 ton version cost ~25.2 billion, I guess that this one would still be well under 30 billion).

I think I see a problem in your strategy.

Of course it eats Leviathans for breakfast, it IS one, AND it devotes all of it's mass to the job.

And of course, you're still using NGauss. As I explained, HNPPCs let you bracket fire.

And nah, not really a Leviathan in its own right. Compare both ships, there are plenty of differences.
Though if you count in the ASF compartment, it might still be a very ugly battle for both sides. 300 ASFs are no joke.
And yes, I like N-Gauss. Also that thing needs something to "deserve" the designation "Archon".
With Naval C³ bracket fire shouldn't be necessary... but well, you never know how things work out. Guess the option to bracket fire wouldn't had hurt.

If you dont want to outsource the AMS job but keep it with the battleship, the amount of tons that you would need to for the fire control computers, especially since they would need to be doubled, is just so freakishly high that it is just not... economical to NOT outsource the job.

I don't know, mine is only 25% bigger than yours, and it gets by with only about 30k in fire control.

It works as well as you let it. As long as your ships have good speed and long range weaponry, there's no reason for you to need to close ranges. The only things getting close should be ASF.

Alright, here's a modified version of my Dreadnought. This one swaps the SC/Ls for an array of 4xNL-45s and 6xLarge Pulse Lasers in each of the 4 point defense arcs. It was done for similar reasons to the original ERPPCs to SC/L switch. This allows it to do even MORE damage at the extreme ranges it excels at, while still effectively combating aerospace. In fact, the pulse lasers mean that it's damage is actually increased against them in total.

Unfortunately, the 5 Screen Launchers per arc had to be reduced to just 3, but there were too many anyway. In addition, the cargo bay also took a hit, though because of the reliance on energy weapons, and the generous fuel and food allocation, it's not too big of a deal. Especially because of the attached dropships.

You do realize that if the WarShip expends any thrust, those tanks are going to go flying?

An additional problem is that their weapon range is only their own hex. Quite simply, ground units in space really suck.

You'd be better off spending the tonnage on some additional fighter bays.

It's obviously for Jumpships.

But even then it doesn't make sense.

Anyway, I came up another design. It has more firepower, more long range laser AAA, and it even uses the Gauss you like so much. Plus it has 300 AMS on the sides.

What he said about the one hex thing is true, plus they have +4 to hit aeros, but landed things don't necessarily fall off.

Yes. But if that happens, you can just try to land again. And stopping or doubling your velocity in one turn? That means the ship was already almost at a standstill. In a fight, the ships are probably not going to do that.

Plus, tanks are dumb. Mechs with Talons or claws get a -1 to landing. Mechs with BOTH get -2.

That's what you would THINK. But, take a look at my arcs. AMS has a range of one. That means you need AMS in each arc to cover that side. But, broadside covers TWO areas, those used by left and right aft and fore. So I spammed the broadside up with AMS. Any missiles trying to hit there are dead. But I still need regular weapons.

Of course, THOSE go in the fore/aft left/right. But take a look at their arcs. Putting them all there leaves me with a big hole directly fore and aft.

So I put a Heavy Mass Driver in the front, and suddenly nobody even thinks for a second of attacking that area.

Long range, the hole isn't much of a problem. Even the slightest maneuvering switches it to fore left/right, especially at long range.

Plus, the extra weight saved on no Fire Control went to giving me a bunch of NL-55 all around. Good luck not getting vaporized from long distance Aeros. Plus they're decent weapons by themselves.

Oh, and Naval C3. Either it can fire at short range, or it just gets -1 to hit, depending on the rules you use.

See what I did now?

I needed to, literally, cover my ass. The rear arc still only has 1 AMS. And the lasers can't hit there.

Plus, it converges well with the aft left/right NL-55s.

Yes, directly to the rear still has inadequate ASF coverage, but, that's what the HNPPCs are for.

I call it the trench run.

The rules you're looking for are on p120 of the corrected 2nd printing:

"In any turn a unit moves, it must make a Piloting Skill Roll. If it fails, it comes off the hull."
"If the Aerospace unit changes heading or velocity all units on the hull must make a Piloting Skill Roll."
"Any unit that fails a Piloting Skill Roll is removed from the playing field. It has lost its hold on the hull and floats away. It must make a new landing attempt."

However, there's also been another addition that may help the Partisan: a ship may be designed with tracks, to allow tracked vehicles to move around the hull on those tracks. The addition doesn't make clear whether the tracked vehicle are subject to being thrown off or not.

Obviously, they all still suck because of the range issue, which hasn't been changed.

I dunno... don't think the odds would have changed for the better actually. Before, where you also had that 500 something nose, it would have been a matter of luck. Now? Not so much, I guess. The point is to prevent boarding by the enemy. If battlemechs/tanks/BA land on you, they can fight like a normal ground map.

Remember: 1 Space turn = 6 Ground turns

If you aren't there to fight them, they get free shots at your engines and bridge.

The +2 sounds bad until you remember the Naval C3. Plus, it's the only weapon bar a capital missile or medium mass driver that can threshold Dreadnoughts.

Plus, don't forget, to get in the front arc, you have to go through the fore left/right unless I just straight close on you. The mass driver might well be the last hit you take.

You right. So the HMD isn't the best weapon in space combat. I keep getting stuck on the 10 weapons it counts as, and the reduced accuracy. For 100k tons HNGauss and HNPPCs are a much better option.

And again, concerning the Mass Driver. That thing weighs 100k tons, which equal 7 and something Hevy NGauss, which in return would equal 210 capital damage. That's more than double the damage of a Heavy Mass Driver at much increased accuracy and flexibility.
Your only missing out on thresholding a Leviathan.

As long as you don't wanna kill off whole planets, the Mass Driver is just a shite tool for ship-to-ship combat.

Hehe, well... I though about this kind of battleship approach for quite some time. Didn't come up with a better solution as of yet :P

Heavy nose power over extreme range with enough armor to avoid being thresholded by basically anything, still heavy enough armament at the full broadsides to kill most things that dare closing in.

Though one should avoid exposing one's own butt. There isn't too much to shoot back with compared to the rest of the ship.

Come to think of it, that's probably why Interstellar Ops is taking so long. They need to overhaul the BT economy. It's just so messed up right now.

So, this is my final take.
Swapped the Hull Defense tanks for a squadron of ASF that are supposed to cover the nose arc against hostile ASF, as suggested by sillybrit. Sine the ASF compartment is not intended for attack missions the 444 tons of cargo for them plus the little extra in their cubicles should be sufficient.
Reduced the fuel storage a little, as well as the consumables. I guess a full year is still very much okay instead of 400 days.
Allowed me to bring the "secondary" armament to a maximum with now 90 Piranha launchers.
The only spot left that I would consider "weak" or rather subpar, is the butt. But if this thing has ever something on its tail, something must have gone horribly wrong prior to that.
The accompanying dropship would function as a Naval C³ spotter (aerodyne at ~8.500 tons, heavily armored and very fast, also small craft carrier).
With the two small craft in the warships belly that would make 6 to 8 specialized AMS small craft dedicated to the warships missile defense.
I consider that to be the pinnacle up to the 2 mil tons mark. I wouldn't know how one could still improve upon this without raising the tons and the price tag.

Try replacing a bay of R/L Aft NAC/30's for similar bay of SCL/3's? And maybe apply a bay or two of the same in the Aft as well for more firepower?

Also if you have any tonnge leftover, maybe drop the single HNG bay for a pair of LNG?

Also one more thing, can I use canon designs instead of custom for this?

Each of your suggested changes would force doubled (because of the NC³) tons for firecontrol computers, where right now there are none.
Also the SCL3s have inferior range compared to the NAC30s. I'm not quite seeing your point, to be honest.
