(Answered) Abandoning a 'Mech without ejecting

This has come up many times in the campaign we have been playing.  Is it possible for a Mechwarrior to abandon their 'Mech without ejecting by simply opening the access hatch and getting out?  Like when it would deadly for them to eject via normal means.

To clarify, this is during a normal combat.

There are no rules for this in Total Warfare, but it is possible within an RPG frame.  There are no rules in AToW indicating how long it might take to leave a 'Mech in this fashion either.  It would logically take a few turns to unstrap and unplug, and then climb out.
