(Answered) Mech mortars, trailers, and C3
« on: 19 November 2011, 12:28:38 »
...I want to mount a Mech Mortar on a Trailer, but need to make sure I understand their to-hit calculation.

Example 1

A Trailer with a MM/8 is firing at an enemy Mech behind a ridge, out of LOS.
 - The Tractor's Gunnery skill is a 4.  (4)
 - The enemy Mech is at Medium range.  (+2)
 - The Trailer was stationary in the Movement Phase. (+0)
 - The enemy Mech moved 4 hexes. (+1)

Does the +1 penalty from the rules for LRM indirect fire apply?

The rules for Mech Mortars include an additional +2 penalty for indirect fire without a spotter.

The MM/8 fires Airburst ammunition, aiming at the stationary hex, for a bonus of (-4).

The final to-hit number is 6.
 - If a friendly unit can be used as a spotter, substitute the spotters movement modifier for the +2 penalty.  If a Battlearmor squad is used as a spotter, do they qualify as Infantry and have no movement modifier?  (LRM Indirect Fire, pg 111, TW.)  If this is the case, would the to-hit number be a 4?

Example 2

A Trailer with a MM/8 is firing directly at an enemy Mech in LOS.

The rules for Mech Mortars include an additional +3 penalty for direct fire.

The MM/8 fires Airburst ammunition, aiming at the stationary hex, for a bonus of (-4).

The final to-hit number is 7.

Example 3

A C3-equipped Tractor with 4 Trailers, each with a MM/8, is firing at an enemy Mech behind a ridge, out of LOS.
 - The Tractor's Gunnery skill is a 4.  (4)
 - A C3-equipped friendly Mech is at 7 hexes from an enemy Mech, providing a Short range modifier.  (+0)  If the Mech was at or within 6 hexes, a minimum range penalty would apply.

The final to-hit number is 4.
 - If a friendly unit can be used as a spotter, substitute the spotters movement modifier for the +2 penalty.  If a Battlearmor squad is used as a spotter, do they qualify as Infantry and have no movement modifier?  (LRM Indirect Fire, pg 111, TW.)  If this is the case, would the final to-hit number be a 2?

C3 never helps indirect fire.

The rules say they can indirect fire as LRMs, which means they act as LRMs in all ways, including the +1 to-hit penalty. The prime advantage of a 'Mech Mortar over a LRM rack is that they can always ignore intervening terrain, are impervious to AMS, & deliver an increased number of damage clusters vs an equivalent size LRM rack.

Rapid-posting here, so if this is unsufficient let me know.

They look correct, aside from "Under no circumstances do Airburst Mortars apply the -4 immobile target to-hit modifier, regardless of whether the target of the attack is a hex", and the fact that the modifier for indirect fire only applies to indirect shots.
