Overview
The Eland RRV is an unusual vehicle. An extremely light vehicle at on 15 tons, the Eland is small enough that it can easily be transported by cargo helicopter.
It was designed this way because it has a specific purpose, defending against pirate raids. An Eland lance can be moved into position quickly to counter an enemy raiding force and slow them long enough for heavier forces to be brought to bear.
Capabilities
Mobility for the Eland is a balance of speed and terrain handling. While its wheeled chassis cannot traverse exceptionally rough terrain, it does offer the Eland a top speed of just under 100 Km/H. This is fast enough to stay in front of all but the lightest enemy incursions.
Armament for the main model of the Eland emphasizes range to improve survivability. Two Delta Dart long-range missile launchers sharing a single ton of ammo are the primary armament, giving the Eland the same long-range capability of the LCT-1M Locust.
Armor is light, be reasonable given the mass of the vehicle. 3.5 tons of armor allows the Eland to take a significant impart to most locations without an immediate loss of the vehicle and crew.
Deployment
As of 3039, the Eland has become popular primarily in the periphery, where resources for more expensive rapid response units are not generally available. The first customer was the Sterope PDM, the local militia responsible for the defense of Sterope Defense Industries' manufacturing facilities. A company of Elands and a corresponding force of transport units are stationed at an airfield strategically located near several important weapons manufacturing facilities.
Since then the Eland has proven to be fairly popular among other planetary militias in the region. Nearly every Taurian militia within a two jump radius of Sterope has added some elands as part of a rapid reaction force to defend against possible raids from the Federated Suns. As the Davions’ attention has been elsewhere, none have been involved in combat against FedCom forces.
Variants
While the primary version of the Eland focuses on long-range work, several others are available.
The first is a simple swap of the LRM racks with a pair of Holly quad SRM racks. Once again both launchers are fed by a single ton of ammunition. While this makes the Eland a potentially dangerous short-ranged combatant, it is unpopular with crews that need to get much closer to potential targets.
The second replaces the LRM racks with a triple SRM-2 mount, fed by two tons of ammunition. This allows for the use of both standard and Inferno ammo, a popular option in places where enemy forces are unlikely to have double-strength heat sinks.
The last variant is intended less as a rapid response unit, and more of a scout. It retains one LRM rack and its ammo, but replaces the other with an SRM-2 and a single ton of ammunition. This gives the vehicle a mix of weapons and endurance to operate away from friendly resupply for a while.
