Like a lot of people, I don't seem to have time anymore to spend hours painstakingly painting my miniatures, especially if I want to indulge in gaming with these same mini's and also spend some time doing my other hobbies...and the there is full time work and family/domestic stuff too :)

So I do quick paint jobs these days, aiming to get a decent tabletop paint job done...so I use the Army Painter Dip. I know there are other quick methods of shading, but what I prefer about the Army Painter stuff is that it gives me both the shading effect and an incredibly durable finish to the mini so it stands up brilliantly to gaming, transporting and storage.

Instead of "flicking" the mini or using a brush on the mini to remove excess dip...I just dunk the entire thing in the pot, fully submerge the miniature and then let a power drill do all the work for me...put the mini into a small box with a hole in the top and spin that drill at Warp Factor 12 for 3-5 seconds...the box catches all the spin-off dip so you don't spray it all over the house...this method is super quick and does a better job than I can manage by flicking or brushing the mini.

I have 4 x Wolverines, 2 each from the Beginner Box Set and the AGoAC Box Set...and so I decided to start my plastic-work on 2 of the Wolverines. These mini's have two different colours, mimicking the super cool box art from the Beginner Box Set...on top of a white undercoat, I airbrushed the top half with two quick coats of red and brushed-on a single coat of black grey on the bottom half and also on a couple of weapon bits, all of which took less than 10 minutes for each mini...then I spent a few minutes more on each mini working on the cockpit windows, and once the paint was dry I then spent less than a minute on dipping and spinning up each mini on the drill. If you use a fast spinning drill you don't need to do any extra clean up of excess dip.

After 1 day of the dip drying, do your base work, and after 2 days of the dip drying lay down 2 x light coats of Testor's Dullcote to remove the shine of the dried dip and protect the base work...and that's it.

If you want to add decals, do it before you put the Testor's Dullcote on.

The bases are 2mm thick laser cut black acrylic with a hex size of 50mm from flat edge to flat edge. I like having the bases this big as it provides more stability for the miniature and also allows you to do some more interesting base work...I'll probably do a little more to the bases below once I have all 10 mini's painted.

I mostly play Alpha Strike, but sometimes CBT with the Miniature Rules, so having large hex bases doesn't matter as they don't have to fit inside the Map Hexes.

So between the 4 x Box Sets, I have 20 x IS plastic mini's and I think I will do 10 in this colour scheme and 10 in another, yet to be determined colour scheme.

That quick shade has been awesome for getting mass amounts of ‘Mechs done in relatively short order. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the unit all painted up!

Brilliantly done, and those Wolverines look great. 8)  Thanks for sharing the technique!

Grat stuff! For some reason the wolverines look orange on my side of the screen. neat orange in any case. And great technique!

Definitely looking good. I do brush on with my Magic Dip equivalent (teak wood stain); the drill seems a little overkill, but if it works at your painting bench, it's good!

Did you intend to recreate Clan Wolf Beta Galaxy's paintjob? ;)

Thanks guys! I'm going to undercoat and airbrush the top halves red on the other 8 Mechs at some point today.

For some reason the wolverines look orange on my side of the screen. neat orange in any case.

Yes it does look orange-ish, which I think is a combination of the fact that I took the pics under the light of a strong LED lamp and the paint I used is Vallejo Model Air Light Red (which is getting close to being orange). I find lighter colours work better for showing detail when using dips. Under natural light and to the naked eye, they don't appear so orange, and the grey doesn't appear as flat as it does in the pics, it has more depth...and the base doesn't look so sand-coloured, it's more brownish. When I finish painting all 10 Mechs, I'll see if I can take a pic under natural light to more accurately reflect their actual colours.

Did you intend to recreate Clan Wolf Beta Galaxy's paintjob? ;)

The paint scheme I am doing is meant to somewhat mimmick the box art on the Beginners Box Set, however the Clan Wolf Beta Galaxy paint scheme is indeed under consideration for some of the Clan Mechs from the upcoming Kickstarter (although Ghost Bears will be my main thrust with those).

I had a day off work today so had a chance to smash out some progress on the rest of these plastic Mechs...did the spray white undercoat, 2 x air bursh coats of red on the top half and 1 x hand brush coat of black grey on the bottom half and various weapons.

On my next days off I'll do the cockpit windows and dip the mini's...

I quickly did the cockpit windows and the dipping this morning...all I have to do now is the basing and the couple of light coats of Testor's Dullcote spray...I'll leave them to dry for a couple of days first though!

Ah, that horrible moment when you are looking at a bunch of shiny 'Mechs and just waiting to dullcoat them! Or maybe that's just me. The cockpits look excellent, but that BattleMaster is definitely the standout! Great job.

Ahahahaha, yeah, there's a definite urge to take that shine away with dullcoat...and to also keep the minis secreted away, safe from all dust and atmospheric floaties until they've dried enough to be immune from things sticking to them :)

Does this look like what can be done with some brushes and hours of time? No. Does this look pretty good? Yes. Is it respectable? Absolutely. For simpler paint schemes this is a really good way to get it done. Especially if you are trying to do what you are doing with getting out a pretty big number of units all at once.

Your idea to get the excess off is really brilliant. That's my one real critique of using dips. There is almost no way to get the excess off very well. You might as well paint a wash on.

I'm not a big fan of the new GW contrasts I suppose you get a "highlight" (really just spots where the base color is so thin to provide a highlight) and shades where the paint pools.  Your method basically just shades, except the gloss finish (even with dullcote) should provide a perceived highlight?

That bit of detail work you do really makes the difference. The metal bits and cockpit jeweling makes it stand out from most dipped models I've seen.

Excellent work.

Thanks Nastyogre!

Over the last couple of days I found little bits and pieces of time here and there to finish off the mini's I've been working on with Testor's Dullcote spray, and to also work on and finish the basing. I also felt like adding a couple more bits of black grey to various small areas on some of the mini's...

I have another set of miniatures exactly the same as these, so now that I am on 2 days off work I will start working on those. I think I'll do this next lot yellow with dark grey accents. Instead of using the Dark Tone dip though, I'll use the Strong Tone. The Dark Tone has a black base tint, whereas the Strong Tone has a brown base tint and will work better with the yellow.

I also drew up a design in Inkscape to have a new spinner for my drill cut out in 2mm black acrylic. The one I was using, which is just a screw glued to a 2mm hex base, worked, but I find that once you've dipped a few mini's and start to get the dip all over the spinner, that surface get slippery and sometimes the bulldog clips can spin off when spinning the drill up to speed, and the mini can fall into the box...

So I designed one that allowed the bases of the Mechs to sit down in a recess so they wouldn't spin off the spinner, and I also glued an old drill bit to the spinner top in a more centralised position so I get a more even and flat spin. I just need to glue a few more little pieces on to the upper surface that will help hold the bulldog clips in place when the drill is at speed...I'll be using this new spinner on the next set of Mechs I do.

Below are pics of the finished spinner. I glued two little blocks on the upper surface towards the outer edge of the spinner, over which the two bulldog clips will sit to hold the miniature base and prevent it from falling out (the hex-shaped recess that the base sits in prevents it from spinning off). When the drill is at speed, if the bulldog clips begin to slip/spin off due to a build-up of the slippery dip, they will be prevented doing so by the two blocks.

I tried a single Mech with yellow today. 1 x white spray undercoat, 1 x airbrush yellow coat and 1 x brush-on coat of black grey for the weapons and another spot on the back.

Once that all dried I dipped in in the Army Painter Strong Tone dip and spun it up with my new spinner shown above.

Again, this process is just meant to get some decent looking tabletop mini's painted and onto the table for gaming use, so I'm looking at spending minimal time on them. I reckon I spent less than 5 minutes painting and dipping this Mech (not including drying times of course). Probably another 5-10 minutes for the base work and Testor's Dullcote when I get around to that once the dip has dried.

I could probably cut that time down a little if I was willing to fork out the cash for an Army Painter Spray yellow, because they act as an undercoat as well as a base coat, so you'd cut out the undercoat step if using that...but I'd prefer to make use of the paints I already have here at home.

The strong tone was absolutely the way to go, especially with such a bright yellow. It is going to look slick once everything is given a dull coat and based. The color scheme might need another color to break up the yellow, though. Something like a red (I'm thinking Imperial Fist space marines) or maybe a blue? The bright of your orange-red 'Mechs is really balanced out by their dark legs and it creates a great look, like Clan Wolf's Beta Galaxy. Not that you would have to go that far with these guys, but something to accent the piece.

Yeah, I think you're right in regards to breaking up the yellow some more. On the larger models if the yellow is not broken up it will look even more obvious. I'll do some colour research and see what I can come up with :)

The basing will also break up that yellow visually.  Right now it looks a little bit overpowering because the base is either the same or a very similar color and there's no contrast to draw the eye.

Doing just a bit of a few panels might break that yellow up too. More time but not a whole lot. It does look good though I have this wierd personal bias against yellow. Was sick to my stomach while coloring with a maize crayon as a child. From years yellow made me queasy. Now I just don't like it.

All yellow? Banana Battalion? Lemon Legion? Sunshine Squad? Corn Company?

Thanks for all the advice and comments fellow Mechwarriors :)

I ended up adding some more black grey to break up the yellow. I'm happy with how it has turned out, although not as eye catching as the red/black grey, it will still look good on the table top...and during the upcoming kickstarter, I'll no doubt procure some more of these Mechs along with all the other Mechs being made available so will have plenty of plastic Mechs to try out new paint schemes in the future.

Now I have 9 more Mechs to get ready for this same yellow scheme.

I've gotta hand it to you, the small sections in the arms and legs does a great job of breaking up the yellow without robbing the 'Mech of its primary color. And Scotty was absolutely right about the base helping to break up the unit and providing something for the yellow to play off of. Great work!
