I've been just waiting for the rocket to launch because it's been constantly delayed.
Hopefully the weather will hold out for tomorrow's launch.  This is very exciting.

I know SpaceX is not then the most popular among people who are enthusiastic about space travel but I think that things have improved quite a bit since they entered the space race of sorts.

I've read elsewhere that there's been some kind of problem with Boeing causing problems in the bidding war trying to Edge out SpaceX from the commercial passenger service to the space station. So I'm hoping that the launch with the Falcon heavy will work out.

There you go folks, an image of a black hole, a super-massive Black Hole a mere 6.5 billion times the mass of our sun, that also happens to 'only' around 40 billion miles in diameter, and is 'only' 500 million trillion km away from us :)

The glowing ring you're seeing the inner edge of the black holes accretion disk, particles of matter swirling round the event horizon at incredible speeds that its hotter than a star's core.  These particles either get swallowed, or ejected as jets of superheated particles

that go so far that they go into intergalactic space.

Hate to been someone inhabiting the path of the ejection path.

I'd imagine they either get fried or vaporized from all that stuff the Black Hole is ejecting.

Luckily space is so vast that it would be a one in trillions event to have a planet be directly in the path of a black hole jet.

With that said, I'm sure it can happen because space is so vast and there are so many black holes.

I call this the galactus conundrum.

Sad day for the Israelis; two minutes to touchdown they lost an IMU and the main engine on the Beresheet lander.  It went through emergency restart, but the freefall was too long.  Last telemetry was 149m above the surface, descending way outside nominal at 134m/s vertically and 946m/s horizontally; it splashed pretty hard.

First steps.  And they won't be the only ones.

Last image received from the probe at 22km vertical altitude.

It takes experience, and sadly, this is often part of experience. It's hard to call it a failure due to that.

Something electrical, I think; they lost telemetry signal, one of the IMUs, and the main engine all at once but were able to put the lander in reset and reignite the engine at least.  It also looked like it was way off angle for some reason; possibly IMU failure triggered an attitude shift.  I was watching a livestream of the landing from the mission control center.  Most talk was in Hebrew, but they did have an English speaker explaining some things from time to time while all the telemetry data was in straight English anyway.

What rough way to end a mission that was done by non-profit.  Hopefully they will be able try again and be able correct what issue happens.

Space is hard and unforgiving.  Armstrong's landing was rough too, but he was able use his piloting skills get the Eagle down when the landscape they were coming down turned up to rocky.  They got lucky at last minute at landing, finding flat spot running out fuel.

I'm curious has the Israel lander hadn't malfunctioned at the last minute, if it would have ran into that sort issue. Grant you we've mapped the moon in more fine detail since the Apollo.

Nah, they knew where they were coming down; if they hadn't lost the engine just then it'd have soft-landed in Mare Serenitatis.  Wikipedia says it wasn't going to last long anyway, built simple with no thermal control, and would have overheated in a few days.  The only real instrumentation was a magnetometer on board for local observation.  I suppose they could have gotten orbital readings on something, if it'd been deployed as a surveyor, but the rest of the payload makes it feel a little more like a morale-stunt than anything else.

I suppose it's the equivalent of a hundred-mile-long golf ball drive, getting within an inch of the cup on the first swing.  Nnnnoooot quite...but only one little thing at just the wrong moment was all it needed.

Fortunately for the Israelis, everything else worked just fine, so...doing it again shouldn't be too hard.  It's not like the early days of the moon shots, when by comparison we didn't even know how to make a golf club yet, let alone hit anything reliably with it.

Also, on the good news side, Falcon 9 Heavy's launch was a success.  Here's a photo of the two boosters landing side-by-side at the Cape, the third rocket landed successfully a short time later.

I was reading yesterday, Lockheed Martin release images of their proposed Lunar Lander.

Because the President is ordering everyone to hurry up and get rocket on the moon, the lander won't be reusable from the gist from this article from MSN.

Which i think would be another punch to the budget to get people down on the moon if their serious about it.  That would means you'd have keep lander in production repeatively, verse refueling the thing. I don't think a Cargo Refueling ship would be ready to do that in time table.
Their also reducing the size of the Gateway Luna Spacestation so to get things moving along.  I suspect its going something they can fit on the existing rockets vs SLS.

I'd love to be in one of those boats for the launch. Not only do uou get the actual launch, which is an awesome sight to behold, but you get to see the boosters return which is like something out of science fiction for a child of the 80's like myself.

CRAP.  I'm not entirely surprise it happened, it was bound to.

The  drone ships aren't really ships, their barges, no V in the hull keep it steady in rough seas last time i checked.  Too bad they can't land the rocket into something that a deeper hull, have gantries grab the thing.

From the company's website they think the Engines are ok, but they need check it out. That be expensive fix it does.
Too bad they could fly the booster in one orbit try land it on land.

Wrangler,  is that pic the Falcon Heavy core or the Falcon 9 first stage that landed just offshore at the Cape last year?

From what I've seen the hold down device that is on the drone ship won't work with the Heavy core. Sounds like it's time for them to modify it.
